Appearance
The Sky Pit manifested as a massive, perfectly circular toroidal structure suspended over the Pacific Ocean. Its inward-collapsing center was covered by a faint, multicolored membrane, giving it the appearance of a pit or vortex in the sky. 9 47
- Anchored at an altitude of 18,000 meters. 11
- Approximately 20 kilometers in diameter and 300 meters thick. 11
- Its surface carried flowing seven-colored, glass-like radiance that refracted sunlight into rainbow hues. 11 47
- The center resembled a contracting rift, with distorted clouds and light forming an upward vortex. 47
- Its ring-shaped structure was assessed as an external constraint device confining and stabilizing an internal passage. 38
Phenomena & Effects
Spatial Distortion
The Sky Pit warped nearby space, producing observable gravitational-lensing effects.
- Light and laser beams entering its vicinity were refracted and scattered rather than continuing in straight lines. 12 13
- Researchers attributed the distortion to gravitational waves affecting the surrounding space. 13
- It remained fixed at its original coordinates, unaffected by Earth’s rotation, gravity, or normal magnetic conditions. 11
Electromagnetic Interference
The area around the Sky Pit severely disrupted conventional electronics.
- Magnetic fields became increasingly chaotic near the structure, while the optical spectrum exhibited unexplained deviation. 11
- Reconnaissance drones suffered control interference; the Global Hawk’s feed degraded before cutting out entirely. 11
- A major internal reaction produced an electromagnetic pulse strong enough to disable nearby drones. 13
- Aircraft entering its identification zone experienced jammed radio communications and degraded or unusable radar systems. 91 119 120
Interworld Transit
The Sky Pit functioned as a stable passage between Earth and an alien world.
- Alien aircraft, including Sentinels, Type 2s, and Type 3s, emerged from the passage. 13 303
- Alien escape pods returned through its internal vortex after combat. 79
- During the final offensive, loitering munitions, Dark Sword drones, and manned aircraft successfully traversed it to reach the alien planet. 361
- The alien-side energy facility was identified as the system supplying energy to the Sky Pit and maintaining its stability. 363 364
Background / History
Discovery and First Contact
The Sky Pit appeared over the central Pacific as an unnatural circular anomaly. Initial satellite observations recorded spectral shifts and aurora-like radiance in a location where auroras should not occur. An academic assessment judged it highly likely to be artificial, prompting immediate mobilization by the Great East and the United States. 9
Reconnaissance established its fixed altitude and enormous dimensions, but close approaches revealed severe electromagnetic disruption. A laser experiment conducted from the 815A confirmed that the apparent optical anomalies were caused by gravitational lensing around the structure. 11 12 13
The Sky Pit then underwent a violent internal reaction, emitted a powerful EMP, and released one hundred unidentified aerial targets. These craft attacked nearby naval forces, turning the anomaly from a reconnaissance mystery into the center of an alien conflict. 13
Guarded Alien Bridgehead
After the initial battle, Sentinels maintained a defensive orbit around the Sky Pit and generally returned to it after pursuing targets beyond a limited range. Analysts concluded that their primary mission was to protect the passage. 30 43
The Sky Pit became the focus of constant satellite surveillance, air patrols, naval deployments, and covert international investigation. Many states regarded it as both an existential threat and a potential “door” into alien territory. 33 43
Over time, the alien forces used the passage to deploy larger formations. A later surge sent more than a thousand Type 1 craft through the Sky Pit, while subsequent offensives saw Type 3 craft emerge in coordinated attack waves. 123 303
Ascension Ritual
The Sky Pit was linked to the alien civilization’s Ascension Ritual. During Liu Jun’s ritual, alien Type 3 and Type 2 craft formed a hexagonal light-screen arena with entrances oriented toward Liu Jun and the Sky Pit. 300
After Liu Jun destroyed the opposing Type 2, he was recognized as having “ascended,” revealing that the alien civilization’s hierarchy and combat traditions were connected to the passage’s surrounding forces and infrastructure. 276 301
Final Offensive and Collapse
After years of conflict, East University launched a campaign-level assault on the Pacific Sky Pit using ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, carrier aviation, drones, and naval air-defense fire. 359 360
The strike force passed through the passage to attack the alien world. Liu Jun’s special mission targeted the alien energy facility that supplied and stabilized the Sky Pit. 361 363 364
Following the operation, the Sky Pit’s crystalline ring cracked, collapsed toward the ocean, and shattered. With its containment device gone, the Einstein–Rosen Bridge at its center destabilized and broke apart. 370
