Background and History
The Night Elves formed around the Well of Eternity, consolidating villages and tribes into a nation. They built Eldarath beside the Well as their capital and named it in honor of Queen Azshara, the “Light of Lights” and “Moon of Moons.” 1
Their early civilization developed two major faiths. Elven mages and prophets who answered Hu Feng’s miracle became the Highborne and formed the Council of Truth, while worshippers of Elune established the Temple of the Moon and trained as Moon Priestesses. Under Azshara, the Highborne served as royal mages, while Moon Priestesses built temples, healed civilians, and spread through the empire. 1
At its height, the Night Elf Empire occupied most habitable land on the continent, drove the Trolls into remote regions, and maintained friendly ties with Azeroth’s five Dragon Aspects. 1 This era ended when Azshara opened a portal over the Well of Eternity after receiving promises of unrivaled Night Elf power. Demons emerged, Eldarath fell into ruin, and the Burning Legion occupied the capital while Night Elf resistance forces and the Dragonflights fought to destroy the portal. 2 3 6
After the Great Sundering, Dath'Remar Sunstrider and his family departed across the sea, while Suramar’s Highborne remained allied with their Night Elf kin. Garrith Shadowsong led the army, Tyrande became High Priestess of the Temple of the Moon, and Malfurion became Archdruid. 7 Illidan’s creation of a new Well of Eternity at Darnassus led to his imprisonment; Malfurion and Cenarius planted Teldrassil over the new Well. 7
Ten thousand years later, the Night Elves prospered from Darnassus while Suramar remained a floating Highborne city beside Teldrassil. They expanded into Darkshore, Ashenvale, and Felwood, cultivated relations with most native peoples they encountered, and abandoned their earlier isolationism by sending rangers across the sea as scouts and informants. 8 9
Relations with the High Elves deteriorated after Anasterian Sunstrider offended a Night Elf condolence delegation. The Night Elves reduced trade and magical exchange with Quel’Thalas, aided the Silvermoon Ranger Corps instead, and later stationed Rangers and Highborne mages near the High Elf border. 23 24 30
A major ideological transformation followed the Great Purge, during which devotion and obedience toward the God of Magic were imposed across Night Elf society. 93 The Night Elves subsequently established the Night Empire, with the Eternal Night Chancellor Council assuming internal governance beneath the Divine Emperor. 138
Government and Society
| Institution / Group | Function |
|---|---|
| Eternal Night Chancellor Council | Governs the Night Empire’s internal affairs; formed from Tyrande’s Temple of the Moon, the Council of Truth, and Garrith Shadowsong’s border-defense leadership. 138 |
| Council of Truth | Highborne mage-and-prophet order founded around faith in the God of Magic; its emblem is the Eye of Truth. 1 |
| Temple of the Moon | Elune’s priesthood, responsible for temples, healing, clergy, and the Sisters of the Moon. 1 557 |
| Druids | Nature-focused practitioners associated with Malfurion and Cenarius; they safeguard forests, enter the Emerald Dream, and conduct purification efforts. 7 554 |
| Crusaders of the Truth | Fanatical Nightborne religious-military order independent of the Council of Truth, originally trained at the Tower of Slumber. 8 |
| Warden Force | Order founded to guard Illidan following his sentence of eternal imprisonment; Maiev Shadowsong was its first appointed warden. 7 |
| Dawnlight Druids | Druid splinter group led by Anka Clawheart, joined by Primal Gronn and Dryads pledged to defend the Empire’s forests. 138 |
| Origin Night | Former Azshara-aligned faction whose members promoted Elven racial supremacy; many later became Mind Commissars within Imperial forces. 538 |
Night Elf society retains a strong cultural pride rooted in longevity, ancient status, magical power, and vast territorial holdings. This pride increasingly developed into racial chauvinism under the Empire, although the state also incorporated allied non-Elven peoples and rewarded service with citizenship, work, or nobility. 172 246 543

Recent Conflicts
The Night Elves spent thousands of years searching for Velind Star-song and the Moon Goddess’s Scythe after the artifact’s Worgen transformations became uncontrollable. Their Druids coordinated with Tauren, Forsaken, and Lordaeron-aligned forces to investigate Shadowfang Keep and Silverpine Forest. 206 214
When the Worgen threat escalated in Gilneas, Malfurion and Fandral led Night Elves across the sea to recover the scythe. 439 The Imperial army ultimately encircled Velind and the Feral Worgen in northern Gilneas, using mechanized warfare to eliminate resistance before Elune personally stopped the scythe’s attempted escape. 466
Afterward, Feral Worgen were incorporated into forest patrol networks. They avoid Elves and allied animals, rescue injured people within Imperial forests, and serve as the first line of defense against intruders. 467
