Background
Nalan Yanran is Nalan Jie's granddaughter and a disciple of Misty Cloud Sect Sect Master Yun Yun. Though she belongs to the Nalan Family, she entered the Misty Cloud Sect to cultivate from a young age, leaving her less familiar with peers such as Princess Yao Ye. 298
She was formerly bound to Xiao Yan by an engagement, which she chose to end. Although she later acknowledges that her methods may have been extreme, she maintains that she does not regret making her own decision concerning marriage. The broken engagement culminates in their Three-Year Agreement. 383
When the masked alchemist Yan Xiao is injured outside the Nalan residence, Yanran protects him because he saved Nalan Jie. She gradually suspects that Yan Xiao is Xiao Yan, and his talent and prior coldness toward her convince her that she must prepare for their eventual confrontation. 286 288 289 290
A spar with Yao Ye becomes a turning point: despite Yao Ye's lower nominal cultivation, Yanran is forced onto the defensive by Yao Ye's improved physique and refined Dou Qi. The defeat challenges Yanran's pride and leads her to seek out the expert responsible for Yao Ye's transformation—Ye Han. 299
Ye Han's Yin Yang Spirit Liquid tempers Yanran's Dou Qi and removes the accumulated effects of prior pill use. With further help from Ye Han and the Three-Pattern Azure Spirit Pill, she reaches the Dou Spirit realm within months. 349 366 370
After returning to the Misty Cloud Sect, Yanran discovers Ye Han's connection to Yun Yun. Her initial resentment, admiration, jealousy, and confusion gradually develop into a relationship with Ye Han, while Yun Yun remains her closest guide and confidante. 370 376 379 380
At the Three-Year Agreement, Yanran faces Xiao Yan before the Misty Cloud Sect and the major powers of the Jia Ma Empire. She fights with composure and increasingly adapts to his combat experience, but is severely drained after clashing with his Heaven-tier technique. When Yao Chen takes control of Xiao Yan's body and attacks her with a Fire Lotus, Ye Han intervenes to protect her. 383 386 387 388 390
Years later, Yanran returns as a six-star Dou Emperor. Yun Yun abdicates the Misty Cloud Sect leadership to her, entrusting Yanran with the sect while Yun Yun departs to pursue higher realms alongside Ye Han. 487 488
Appearance
Nalan Yanran is a cold, elegant young woman often dressed in moon-white robes. Her appearance is repeatedly compared to a green lotus or an immortal swordswoman, combining refined grace with a sharp martial presence. 298 366 382
- Long ink-black hair, sometimes tied back and sometimes left flowing during battle. 366 387
- Clear, bright eyes and a pale, delicate complexion. 286 387
- Small green jade earrings. 298
- Carries a long sword and commonly wears a moon-white dress with a silver sash. 298 382
Personality
Yanran begins as proud, self-assured, and highly selective about both strength and companionship. She admires exceptional talent, respects powerful people, and believes that only the most outstanding individuals deserve her regard. 300
Her confidence is not unshakable. Defeat by Yao Ye and Xiao Yan's unexpected growth force her to reassess herself, but she responds to pressure by cultivating harder rather than retreating. 289 299
She is resolute about her personal choices, including the broken engagement with Xiao Yan. During their Three-Year Agreement, she refuses to let Xiao Yan's hostility shake her composure or allow his insults toward the Misty Cloud Sect to go unanswered. 383 384 387
Despite her dignified public image, Yanran is playful and teasing around Yun Yun, whom she treats with the affection and familiarity of an older sister as well as a teacher. She is also protective of Yun Yun and becomes visibly jealous when Ye Han gives attention to others. 369 374 408
Abilities & Skills
Wind-Attribute Dou Qi
Yanran cultivates wind-attribute Dou Qi, granting her exceptional agility and a natural advantage in movement.
- Uses swift footwork to evade heavier attacks and reposition in combat. 385
- Channels azure wind Dou Qi through her long sword, producing sharp sword energies capable of scoring stone. 384
- Combines speed with controlled swordplay rather than relying on brute force. 386
Wind Shadow Swordplay
A sword technique personally taught to Yanran by Ye Han before the Three-Year Agreement.
- An unranked offensive Dou Technique centered on speed, fluid movement, and afterimages. 376
- Ye Han demonstrates the technique by forming a sword from Dou Qi and moving quickly enough for afterimages to remain after he stops. 376
- Yanran's wind attribute is particularly suited to the technique, though she initially requires direct correction of her stance and arm movements. 376
Wind Spirit Dividing Form Sword
Yanran's sword technique for creating multiple sword projections.
- Produces five sword phantoms alongside her real blade, allowing her to attack from multiple angles. 385
- Can scatter its projections to evade the Mystic Heavy Ruler and bypass direct defenses. 385 386
- Gives Yanran a means to pressure airborne opponents despite her inability to fly freely. 385
Wind's Extremity, Sunset Radiance
Yanran's ultimate Dou Technique during the Three-Year Agreement.
- Elevates her into the air as surrounding energy gathers into a powerful sword attack. 387
- Forms a dazzling sword radiance described as a second sun before she descends on Xiao Yan. 387 388
- Its clash with Xiao Yan's Flame Splitting Tsunami Ruler leaves both combatants heavily injured and depletes most of Yanran's Dou Qi. 388
Refined Cultivation Foundation
Ye Han's medicine substantially improves Yanran's foundation rather than merely raising her realm.
- Yin Yang Spirit Liquid tempers her Dou Qi and removes residual effects from previously consumed pills. 370
- The Three-Pattern Azure Spirit Pill enables her breakthrough to Dou Spirit, though rapid advancement initially leaves her lacking full control over her increased power. 370 387
- Her growth eventually carries her to six-star Dou Emperor. 487
Equipment
- Long sword — Yanran's primary weapon, used to channel wind-attribute Dou Qi and execute her sword techniques. 298 384
- Inner armor — Given to her by Yun Yun before the Three-Year Agreement; protects her when her moon-white dress is damaged in the clash with Xiao Yan. 388
Relationships
- Yun Yun — Her master, guardian, and later predecessor as Misty Cloud Sect Master. Their relationship is affectionate and informal in private, while Yun Yun ultimately entrusts the sect to Yanran. 369 376 488
- Ye Han — Mentor, benefactor, and lover. He improves her cultivation, teaches her swordplay, and saves her from Xiao Yan's Fire Lotus attack. 370 376 390
- Xiao Yan — Former betrothed and opponent in the Three-Year Agreement. Their relationship is defined by the broken engagement, unresolved resentment, and their decisive duel at Misty Cloud Sect. 383 384 390
- Nalan Jie — Her grandfather and the head of the Nalan Family. He is concerned with both her conduct and the possibility of reconciling the Nalan Family with Xiao Yan. 288 289
- Yao Ye — A fellow young cultivator and occasional rival. Yao Ye's sudden improvement defeats Yanran in a spar, then the two later travel and cultivate alongside Ye Han. 299 407 449
- Xiao Xun'er — Hostile toward Yanran due to Yanran's past with Xiao Yan; their confrontation nearly becomes a fight. 378
