History

Reputation and Political Isolation

The Uchiha’s police duties place them in frequent contact with Konoha’s residents. Yu’s six years as a patrol guard improve both the clan’s reputation and that of the Military Police Force. Setsuna’s decision to expel him reverses those gains: villagers interpret the rejection of a trusted officer as evidence that the force cannot tolerate good people 3 6.

Konoha’s systems and policies also create conflicts of interest between the Uchiha and other ninja, gradually making the clan outsiders within their own village 227. Yu identifies their combination of wealth, military strength, and poor reputation as particularly dangerous: destroying them could enrich other factions, intimidate rival clans, and provoke relatively little immediate resistance. This is his warning about a possible future, not an accomplished destruction 93.

Revival Funding and the Study Group

Nobutada entrusts Yu with seven trunks of clan assets and legacy materials, including one left behind by Madara. Yu accepts responsibility for the clan’s revival while recognizing that its continued existence protects his own cultivation from unwanted scrutiny 46 47.

Yu’s initial political base consists of neglected collateral members. More than 200 clan ninja are under eighteen, and 120 have close relationships with him. By teaching them to awaken the Sharingan, he intends to turn an overlooked population into a force capable of replacing Fugaku 78.

The Ninjutsu and Tactics Study Group becomes the vehicle for this plan. Its first mass-awakening results win support from influential elders, while Yu’s instruction increasingly separates its members from the interests of both clan and village leadership 89 92 95.

Wartime Dispersal and the Tiger Unit

Hiruzen’s leadership and Fugaku agree to disperse the original Study Group members across battlefields. Setsuna and Shiho support the decision, while Yuichiro and Ryunosuke oppose it. Fugaku considers the low-ranking genin expendable once the upper ranks believe they have obtained the secrets of Sharingan awakening 112.

Yu organizes 101 Uchiha genin on the Land of Hot Water battlefield into the Tiger Roar Unit. Their victories contrast sharply with the fate of the members sent to the Land of Rain, of whom only one returns to Konoha alive. This contrast gives Yu exceptional authority over the surviving Tiger Unit members 112 165.

By his return to Konoha, Yu is the younger generation’s de facto leader and controls nearly one-third of the clan’s ninja. The elders promoting his influence deliberately keep its full extent hidden from the upper ranks 172 173.

Yu’s Rise to Clan Head

A confrontation at Itachi’s first birthday banquet exposes the clan’s internal divisions. Fugaku confines Yu, but lifts the restriction after seven days and appoints him president of the Study Group—an institution ranked second only to the Military Police Force in clan power 179 180.

Yu later exposes Setsuna’s collaboration with Danzō. Clan archives show an unusually high peacetime death rate among Sharingan users, particularly those aligned with Kagami. Under Yu’s Mangekyō genjutsu, Setsuna admits helping eliminate opponents within both the Uchiha and Senju clans 244.

Yu is explicitly identified as clan head by Chapter 256. His eventual account of taking power states that he slaughtered his opponents during the takeover; the clan thereafter remains firmly controlled by him and develops rapidly 256 402.

Shisui’s Succession

Preparing to leave for the ancient past, Yu nominates thirteen-year-old Shisui as his successor. The enlarged clan gathers at Naka Shrine, whose hall can no longer accommodate even its Three-Tomoe jōnin, forcing the meeting into the courtyard 401 402.

More than thirty members oppose the appointment, including Momoko and Rinka, who favor Fugaku. Yu suppresses the opposition and kills 37 ninja who refuse to leave the clan or relinquish their Sharingan. Shisui is formally inaugurated, with Fugaku and other elders serving as assistants, before Yu departs Konoha in Year 52 402.

Organization and Leadership

Clan Heads

Leader Position and significance
Uchiha Fugaku Clan head during Yu’s early political rise. His decisions are repeatedly influenced by village leaders and clan elders; he later becomes an assistant to Shisui 112 179 402.
Uchiha Yu Builds his authority through training, wartime command, elder alliances, and control of resources. Eventually delegates management before stepping down 78 184 341 402.
Uchiha Shisui Yu’s chosen successor, inaugurated at thirteen after revealing his Mangekyō Sharingan 401 402.

Nobutada advocates replacing father-to-son succession with leadership by the strongest qualified member. His proposed arrangement is for Yu to lead first and later pass the position to Shisui 92.

Major Institutions

Institution Function
Military Police Force Employs most Uchiha ninja, who consequently rarely leave Konoha outside wartime. It is the clan’s leading organ of power 180 244.
Ninjutsu and Tactics Study Group Trains clan members and produces systematic Sharingan awakenings. Its presidency makes Yu the foremost figure beneath the clan head 180 187.
Tiger Roar Unit / Tiger Unit Uchiha-centered battlefield formation founded by Yu. It begins with 101 genin and later supplies 655 members to the succession gathering 112 401.
Clan meetings Elders can convene emergency meetings. An early meeting consists of Three-Tomoe wielders, with Yu its only non-jōnin participant 98.

Internal Factions

  • Yu’s faction — Begins among neglected collateral members and expands through the Study Group, Tiger Unit, and elder alliances 78 97 220.
  • Neutral elders — Yuichiro and Ryunosuke initially belong to the neutral faction before joining Yu’s cause 91 97.
  • Doves — Yu gains an opening among them by promising support for Shisui’s apprenticeship under the Fourth Hokage and his eventual succession 184.
  • Established leadership interests — Setsuna and Shiho support dispersing the original Study Group. Shiho later joins Yu during another deployment dispute, demonstrating that factional alignments can change 112 220.
  • Tiger Unit subgroups — Captains maintain their own factions and rivalries. Shigenobu cannot command universal recognition in Yu’s absence, leaving the unit’s cohesion heavily dependent on its founder 165.

Abilities and Training

Sharingan

  • Inherited potential: Even collateral members considered poor ninja possess the Uchiha bloodline. Before Yu’s reforms, these neglected members are described as having only a one-in-four chance of awakening the Sharingan 78.
  • Genjutsu: Sharingan users can exert mental control. Yu’s applications range from planting suggestions during training to defeating Root ninja with a glance 89 172.
  • Bloodline advancement: Rapid cultivation breakthroughs can stimulate the Sharingan’s evolution, including advancement toward the Mangekyō 324.
  • Emotional instability: Kazuki’s uncontrolled awakening after severe injury is associated with an abnormal condition that makes him prone to losing control 193.

Mangekyō, Eternal Eyes, and Rinnegan

  • Mangekyō risks: Yu warns his disciples that awakening and using the Mangekyō can lead to blindness 324.
  • Blood-related eye fusion: Fusing with a blood-related Mangekyō is one route to mitigating its drawbacks. Bushi and Shisui lack brothers and therefore cannot use that route 324.
  • Hashirama cells: Can provide recovery benefits, but may consume the recipient if ocular power cannot suppress them 324.
  • White Zetsu fusion: Is comparatively safer and can grant Wood Style, but offers weaker recovery and requires restraint in Mangekyō use 324.
  • Cultivation limits of transplantation: Yu considers Hashirama-cell and White Zetsu fusion damaging to bodily integrity and future cultivation potential 324.
  • Rinnegan potential: Yu teaches that Eternal Eyes combined with the Senju Kekkei Genkai can produce the power of all creation and nurture the Rinnegan 324.

Knowledge of Eternal Mangekyō is not common even within the clan. The monument accessible to Mangekyō users contains information about it, but that monument has been altered by Black Zetsu 222.

Fundamental Three Methods

Yu develops these methods through teaching Uchiha ninja, making the system particularly compatible with the clan 145 180.

Method Training focus
Hundredfold Body Tempering Method Physical development
Cyclic Refinement Method Chakra refinement
Calm Mind Soul Tempering Method Spiritual power
  • Practiced sequentially and cyclically, the methods prepare a practitioner to absorb natural energy and enter the Immortal Path 180.
  • Their Study Group implementation remains a ninja cultivation system rather than direct Immortal Path instruction 187.
  • Continued development eventually allows Mangekyō awakening through steady cultivation without requiring tragedy 385.

Immortal Path

  • Individual instruction: Yu teaches true cultivation to selected disciples, including Bushi and Shisui 193 323.
  • Tailored techniques: Their advanced methods differ by practitioner; copying another person’s exclusive method may provide no benefit or even prove fatal 324.
  • Long lifespan: Successful cultivation can extend life far beyond a normal human lifespan, potentially to a thousand years 324.
  • Bloodline foundation: Yu later identifies several of his early supernatural abilities as manifestations of the clan’s Taiyin Spirit Body, awakened through cultivation rather than independent divine powers 412.

Assets and Resources

  • Revitalization fund — Seven trunks entrusted to Yu by Nobutada contain clan legacy materials and assets. Yu relocates less important assets and vouchers to Cat Castle while personally hiding valuable ninjutsu materials, chakra metal, and treasures 47 51.
  • Archives — Clan casualty records provide the evidence that leads Yu to investigate Setsuna’s collaboration with Root 244.
  • Madara’s holdings — Yu recovers ancient records, ninjutsu scrolls, secret teachings, and other valuables after Madara’s death. He does not recover the Uchiha Gunbai during that search 264.
  • Uchiha Gunbai — A fan representing the clan, counted among the valuable assets Madara took away 264.
  • Resource-gathering operations — Under Yu, Uchiha ninja construct a fortress at Rōran and regularly harvest resources from Barrier Lake, Octopus Island, and Squid Bay 341.
  • Specialty trade and cultivation supplies — Harvests fund the clan through sales, provide nutritious food for children, and supply ingredients for medicines such as Barrier-Breaking Pills and Metal Pills 341.

Relationships

  • Konoha — The clan’s home village, but also the source of policies that isolate it. Yu’s later power-sharing arrangements stabilize relations and allow Uchiha operations without requiring Orochimaru’s approval 227 341.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Monitors the Study Group and engineers the redistribution of its original members to weaken its political base 92 112.
  • Danzō and Root — Exploit internal collaborators and target clan opponents. Yu also recovers an intact Mangekyō from Danzō, suspecting—but not confirming—that it belonged to Kagami 176 244.
  • Orochimaru — Allies with Yu after Fugaku stalls his overtures to the clan. Their later settlement includes Shisui’s qualification as a future Sixth Hokage candidate 184 341.
  • Uchiha Madara — Ancestor whose removed clan treasures are recovered by Yu. His attempt to obtain an agent for the Infinite Tsukuyomi makes potential Mangekyō candidates a security concern 182 264.
  • Black Zetsu — Alters the clan monument and attempts to manipulate Uchiha members. Yu’s presence eventually deters him from approaching the clan directly 222 255 403.
  • Flower-Fruit Mountain — Shisui and Bushi enter its cultivation sequence and receive responsibility for much of Mount Myoboku’s work before Yu’s departure 401.
