Background

Artoria was chosen as Britain’s king after drawing Caliburn while still a young teenager. Her upbringing treated her as a king before a person: she trained as a knight, studied statecraft and military affairs, cared for horses, patrolled at night, and continued receiving instruction from Merlin even in her dreams. 39

Her reign brought repeated victories against invading forces, but the strain of preserving Britain fostered resentment among the Knights of the Round Table and regional lords. The kingdom collapsed following Mordred’s rebellion and the Battle of Camlann; Artoria killed Mordred but suffered a fatal wound herself. 39 260

In one account of her fate, Artoria sought the Holy Grail to redo Britain’s history and accepted the Counter Force’s terms: she would repeatedly enter Holy Grail Wars until obtaining the Grail, then become a Guardian. Her fate changed when she relinquished the Grail and invalidated that contract, allowing her to become a Heroic Spirit by her own choice. 187

As Artoria Alter, she contracts with Shirou despite not remembering their past connection. Da Vinci later helps her answer Rita Ainsworth’s summon, enabling Artoria to enter Shirou’s world in a physical body. 35 76

Artoria’s Alter aspect is cold, proud, direct, and capable of intimidation, yet she remains fundamentally committed to protecting others rather than embracing evil. She distinguishes tyranny from foolish cruelty and refuses to surrender to villainy. 35

As a king, she is decisive and commanding. She can compel former enemies to listen, negotiate alliances with barbarians and knights, and later takes control of Moriarty’s organization through uncompromising measures against its criminal activities. 79 81 273 279

She also displays humility when adapting to modern life. Although initially defined by a proud and aloof royal demeanor, she listens to Yukino Yukinoshita’s advice on concealing Servant powers and living responsibly in the modern world. 183

Artoria cares deeply for Shirou and those under her protection. She takes Shirou to rest after the Vortigern battle, raises Mashiro, worries about Shirou’s safety, and considers every version of herself part of the same family in his eyes. 76 79 184 186
