Terminology
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Heroic Spirit | A legendary or historical figure whose deeds became objects of human faith and remembrance. Their stories are preserved as spiritual records beyond ordinary life. 8 237 |
| Servant | A manifested, summonable instance of a Heroic Spirit. A Servant is distinct from the original record and can possess a physical vessel, act under a contract, and acquire experiences during its manifestation. 111 149 |
| Master | The Servant's contractual partner. Masters and Servants cooperate toward their respective objectives; a Servant is not merely a tool or familiar. 252 |
| Saint Graph / Spiritron Dress | The spiritual framework and manifested form through which a Servant acts. Its condition, Class, and aspect can vary between summonings. 36 111 |
Background
Heroic Spirits originate from people and beings whose legends, accomplishments, and ideals left an enduring impression on humanity. Their myths and stories become the foundation of their power, while Servants are the forms through which those records can answer a summoning and intervene in the world. 8 237 381
A Heroic Spirit's original existence is fixed once recorded. Servants may gain new experiences during a manifestation, but those experiences do not alter the original Heroic Spirit; after the Servant disappears, its life is retained only as a record comparable to a diary. 111 149
Servants are usually summoned to pursue wishes, resolve regrets, or cooperate with a Master in a Holy Grail War. Their pride and individual principles remain important: even Command Spells can force only limited obedience, and a Servant unwillingly treated as a disposable familiar is unlikely to remain cooperative. 252
Manifestation
Standard Summoning
A summoned Servant receives a temporary body and a Class, along with the knowledge necessary to operate in the modern world. This knowledge does not automatically grant academic education or technical understanding; for example, a Servant may operate a vehicle through Riding skill without understanding how it functions. 85
When a Servant's manifested body dissipates, its contract ends and it returns to the Throne of Heroes. A later summoning may produce another aspect of the same Heroic Spirit with different memories, circumstances, or Class. 111 270
Possession Summoning
The FGO system permits a Heroic Spirit to manifest by possessing a compatible living host. During the process, the host receives a Spirit Core, Class-specific abilities, portions of the Heroic Spirit's memories, and combat experience. Shirou's possession by Rider-class Saint George was completed at 60% compatibility. 5
Possession requires mutual recognition between host and Servant. A righteous Heroic Spirit will not choose an evil-hearted host, while different personalities seek different forms of compatibility. 14
- Greater compatibility produces a smoother fusion and stronger manifestation. 21
- At 100% compatibility, host and Servant can achieve an almost complete “one heart, one body” fusion. 150 172
- Hosts may draw on the Servant's knowledge and skills, while the Servant is influenced by the host's personality. 11 85
- A host acting against the possessing Heroic Spirit's beliefs can lose compatibility or even be forcibly restrained by the Servant. 11
Pseudo-Servants
Pseudo-Servants are beings in which a Heroic Spirit is manifested through a living vessel rather than independently. The balance of control differs by case: some hosts retain primary control, while others are heavily influenced by the possessing spirit. 6 11
Yukino Yukinoshita's possession by Ushiwakamaru and Yui Yuigahama's possession by Suzuka Gozen demonstrate the system's ability to grant a host a Servant's combat capacity while retaining elements of the host's identity. 6 10 14
Abilities & Skills
Class Containers
A Servant manifests through a Class, which provides class-specific abilities and shapes its combat role. Known examples include Rider, Saber, Archer, Lancer, Assassin, Caster, Berserker, and Shielder. 5 15 21
- A Class may restrict or alter a Heroic Spirit's available power. 187
- The same Heroic Spirit can appear under different Classes or aspects in separate summonings. 111 270
- A Servant's Class can grant instinctive proficiency, such as Riding allowing operation of mounts and vehicles. 85
Noble Phantasms
A Noble Phantasm is the embodiment of a Heroic Spirit's deeds, experiences, legend, or signature weapon. Most require magical power, charging time, an incantation, or the release of their True Name. 6
- Noble Phantasms can be weapons, conceptual armaments, personal legends, or large-scale phenomena. 6 381
- Their activation generally demands substantial magical energy. 6
- A Servant's legend determines both the nature and strength of its Noble Phantasm. 381
- Servants can be equipped with Conceptual Materials or external support that accelerates Noble Phantasm charging. 6 17
Saint Graph and Spiritron Dress
A Servant's Saint Graph governs its spiritual state and manifested body. Damage, corruption, altered identity, or an incomplete True Name can destabilize the Spiritron Dress. 36
- A damaged Spiritron Dress may indicate that a Servant's identity or spiritual composition has been altered. 36
- Heroic Spirits can possess multiple aspects, including merged spiritual entities such as Yan Qing and the Phantom Doppelganger. 40
- Some exceptional beings can create or preserve physical bodies outside ordinary Servant limitations. 300 303
Skill and Experience Transfer
Possession summoning allows a host to inherit portions of a Servant's combat style, memories, martial skill, and specialized knowledge. Saint George's possession strengthened Shirou's body and granted him the legendary knight's combat experience. 5
- The host can supplement a possessing Servant's limitations with their own modern knowledge. 85
- A compatible host may draw out power close to, or in exceptional cases comparable with, the Heroic Spirit's own manifested strength. 16
- Personality compatibility is as important as raw power in determining the quality of a possession. 14 172
Limitations
- Magical power dependency — Servants require magical energy to remain manifested and to activate high-output abilities. 6 165
- Contract dependency — A standard Servant disappears when its physical body dissipates and its contract ends. 111
- Fixed original record — Growth and experiences gained by a Servant do not directly strengthen the original Heroic Spirit recorded in the Throne. 149
- Summoning restrictions — Heroic Spirits cannot always be summoned freely. In one British otherworld, Chaldea could only call locally connected, famous Servants, whose activity was limited to a roughly 100-kilometer range. 71
- Class restrictions — A Heroic Spirit's Class can significantly weaken abilities that were available in life or under another manifestation. 187
- Host compatibility — Possession summoning becomes unstable or weaker when the host and Heroic Spirit lack mutual recognition. 11 14
Role in *Play FGO With Me*
- Chaldea's damaged summoning system leaves its existing Servants unstable, motivating Mash and Da Vinci to spread FGO and increase public recognition of Heroic Spirits. 4 8
- Shirou's possession by Saint George establishes the Heroic Spirit Possession System as the principal means by which ordinary people can fight Phantasmal Beasts. 5
- As the world's rules change after Perseus's attack, possession summons become smoother and stronger, allowing more people to manifest Servant power. 21
- Da Vinci develops Shirou's Pseudo-Spiritron Dress, allowing him to summon and fight as an idealized Heroic Spirit version of himself. 21 23 34
- The wider availability of possession summoning eventually enables humans and Servants alike to exploit the system, contributing to the large-scale Holy Grail War crisis. 150 153 172
