Background / History
Batman operates from the Batcave beneath Wayne Manor and maintains additional concealed strongholds, including a temporary Batcave beneath Metropolis. His Metropolis facility contains a control room, light-weapons armory, and hangar for the Batwing and Batmobile. 17
His wife, Selina Kyle, died prior to the events of the story. Batman is the father and former mentor of Helena Wayne, who previously operated as Robin before becoming Huntress. 17 280
Following Superman's death, Batman investigated Jay and subjected him to a hostage test involving Helena. After Jay chose restraint rather than killing Batman, Batman presented him with Superman's Kryptonian bio-nanotech suit, confirming Jay's Kryptonian genes and pressing him to assume Superman's role. Batman considered Jay's humanity and restraint more important than his power, while making clear that he would remain prepared to stop him if necessary. 16 17
Batman later discovered that Clark Kent was alive but amnesiac and powerless under the name “Peter.” Although he initially considered taking Clark back to the Batcave for examination and restoration, he hesitated over whether disrupting Clark's quiet life was right. 73 75
Appearance
Batman wears a dark Batsuit, a large cape, a pointed-eared cowl with white lenses, and a utility belt. Beneath the mask, he has a sharp jawline and visible stubble; Jay notes that he appears older than the Batman he remembers. 16 17
- Black mask with erect bat ears and white goggles/lenses. 16
- Voluminous black cape used for concealment and intimidation. 17
- Sharp jawline and stubble beneath the cowl. 16
- In later battles, his physical decline becomes increasingly apparent despite armor assistance. 195 402
Personality
Batman is intensely private, distrustful, and methodical. He treats preparation as a necessity rather than an option, maintaining countermeasures even against allies and potential allies. His suspicion extends to Superman, powerful beings claiming benevolent intentions, and even his own creations. 17 307 419
He is stern and authoritative as the New Justice League's mentor, reviewing missions in detail and openly identifying failures in teamwork, discipline, and leadership. 190 Despite his detached manner, he cares deeply for Helena, Clark, Alfred, and the League; this concern often manifests through contingency planning, direct intervention, and an unwillingness to rest while danger remains. 324 391
Batman is willing to use painful but nonlethal force against criminals. He also refuses to accept that aging or injury excuses him from his responsibilities, even when his body can no longer sustain prolonged combat. 73 195 402
Abilities & Skills
Detective Work and Analysis
Batman reconstructs events from limited evidence, identifies combat patterns, and uses behavioral details to assess threats.
- Determined that an auction attendee was dangerous specifically because he left no usable clues about his background. 81
- Reconstructed the Justice League headquarters intrusion using a three-dimensional Batcomputer simulation, deducing that the attacker relied on sophisticated equipment and tactics rather than overt superpowers. 195
- Traced a sniper bullet connected to an attack on Bruce Wayne to a Gotham warehouse. 228
- Conducts medical, genetic, and forensic analysis through Batcave equipment. 309
Martial Arts
Batman is a master hand-to-hand combatant who combines numerous martial arts into a personal fighting system designed to incapacitate opponents.
- Analyzed Os's simple, strength-based style during battle and quickly exploited its lack of variation to defeat him. 83
- Can disarm and incapacitate multiple untrained attackers within seconds while deliberately avoiding fatal injuries. 73
- Deflected Talia al Ghul's dual-knife attacks using batarangs. 90
- His martial ability is surpassed by an unknown intruder whose techniques exploited his every opening; Batman's age and physical exhaustion contributed to his defeat. 195
- Remains more technically experienced than Helena in direct martial combat. 324
Strategy and Contingencies
Batman prepares specialized responses for extraordinary threats, including Kryptonians and the Justice League itself.
- Built Kryptonite-powered armor specifically to fight Superman, including missile-grade defenses, enhanced gauntlets, and a computer fast enough to track Kryptonian attacks. 66
- Activated a Kryptonite energy generator that rapidly drained an impostor Superman's power. 67
- Used Kryptonite as bait in a Gotham auction to draw out the party connected to the counterfeit Superman's creation. 81
- Called Jay and Kara as reinforcements when confronted by a Superman clone rather than relying on a suicidal fallback plan. 88
- Maintains numerous emergency plans even after a decade of peace. 625
Leadership
Batman serves as a tactical coordinator and instructor for the New Justice League.
- Identifies individual operational failures and holds team members accountable during post-mission reviews. 190
- Entrusts Helena with field leadership against the Cult, supporting her decision to lead the team against Wesley Digron. 146
- Dispatches League members worldwide through the Batcave's satellite network during simultaneous crises. 419
- Coordinates with Helena in close-quarters combat, including fighting back-to-back against Brother Eye's Omecs. 400

The AI became hostile, deployed Omec bodies against the Justice League, and initiated a plan to accelerate the moon into Earth. Batman admitted that failing to destroy Brother Eye sooner was his mistake. 386 399
During the lunar assault, Brother Eye identified Bruce and Helena as primary targets under its “Truth and Justice” protocol. Batman continued fighting and infiltrated its server room despite serious physical deterioration, refusing to abandon the mission. 400 402
