Background / History

Jay transmigrated into a post-Doomsday War world and spent less than six months in an orphanage before Charles and Jane Reynolds adopted him. His legal surname was changed to Reynolds, giving him a warm home while he concealed extraordinary abilities from the public. 2

Initially content to live quietly as Jay Reynolds, he regarded the disappearance of the superhero era as a reason not to involve himself in larger conflicts. His adoptive parents recognized his instinct to help others, however, and encouraged him to become the person he wanted to be. 6 10

Batman later tested Jay and presented him with Superman’s Kryptonian suit. When the suit activated, it established that Jay was a Kryptonian and placed the possibility of inheriting Superman’s role directly before him. 17

Jay publicly accepted the title Superman-Neo after answering a call for a new symbol of hope in Metropolis. He explicitly distinguished himself from Superman while pledging to continue what Superman had fought for. 50

His origins remained incomplete for much of his early career. Hygeian, the artificial intelligence of the ship that brought him to Earth, identified him as “Star Child, son of the Great Star and the Bright Moon,” but key records concerning his background were corrupted. 41 55 Zod later claimed that Jay was Krypton’s last prince, Zod-El, prompting Jay to restore corrupted ship records and investigate Krypton’s hidden history. 537 541

Appearance

Jay commonly appears in a form-fitting deep-blue Kryptonian suit with a red cape and the “S” emblem on his chest. The suit deploys from the emblem as blue particles that cover his body. 17
