Background / History

Kara escaped Krypton’s destruction as a child after her mother sent her away, entrusting her with the promise to look after her younger cousin Kal-El on Earth. Unlike Kal, Kara remembers Krypton’s final moments and is haunted by recurring nightmares of her home, family, and friends disintegrating behind her. She hates darkness and initially believed herself to be the last Kryptonian alive. 266 270

As Supergirl, she became Nashino City’s foremost hero during the earlier superhero era. She later withdrew from public attention after the Doomsday Crisis, though rumors persisted that she continued protecting the city from the shadows. 5

Kara’s loneliness changed when she encountered Jay, another Kryptonian wearing the House of El crest. Their first conversation atop the Daily Planet established a close bond founded on their shared loss and isolation. 19

Appearance

Kara is a blonde Kryptonian woman with bright green eyes and a compact, athletic build. As Supergirl, she wears a red-and-blue uniform with the House of El “S” crest, a red cape, and red thigh-high boots. 24 438

  • Her golden hair is repeatedly described as shining brightly in flight. 24
  • Her civilian disguises rely primarily on oversized square-framed glasses and deliberately awkward presentation. 35
  • During the Kryptonite crackdown, she concealed her costume beneath an oversized tan coat and wore Richie's glasses. 173
  • A future, thirty-years-older Kara appears in a white uniform with dark-blue gloves and a more mature demeanor. 521

Personality

Kara is compassionate, protective, and fundamentally unwilling to abandon people—even enemies. During the Doomsday crisis, she shielded Clone Superman from a fatal strike despite his earlier hostility toward her and Jay. 92

Her kindness is balanced by courage and a forceful temper when others are endangered. She confronts threats directly, often acting before fully considering the risks, such as charging alien forces in the Warworld junkyard and pursuing the attacker who ambushed her in Metropolis. 27 201

Kara carries survivor’s guilt over Krypton and later Mitopia. Although she cherishes her recovered Earth-2 memories, she refuses to accept a plan that would erase her current world to restore the old one. 291 418

She is also playful and socially awkward outside combat, particularly around Jay and his family. Her civilian persona intentionally exaggerates this clumsiness. 35 98

Abilities & Skills

Kryptonian Physiology

Under yellow sunlight, Kara possesses the abilities of a Kryptonian, including immense strength, durability, speed, and flight.

  • Can intercept armed criminals faster than they can react and crush firearms with her bare hands. 5
  • Flies at supersonic speeds and can cross over a thousand miles within minutes. 267 438
  • Has fought other Kryptonians, Doomsday, Darkseid, Steppenwolf, Omacs, and Brainiac’s forces. 92 254 259 410 455
  • Can recover quickly from ordinary injuries with solar exposure. 489
  • Can operate in space for extended periods, though Kryptonians still require oxygen. 94

Heat Vision and Super Breath

Kara projects destructive heat vision and can unleash powerful freezing breath.

  • Her heat vision can tear through construction floors, strike flying opponents, and dismantle Omacs. 148 410
  • Her breath attack defeated Steppenwolf’s general Leopold in a single strike. 254
  • Her freezing breath is listed among her known powers by government intelligence. 173

Super Senses

Kara possesses enhanced hearing and vision, including X-Sight.

  • Her super-hearing makes sonic attacks, such as Silver Banshee’s scream, especially painful. 169
  • She can scan objects and technology with X-Sight, including the Extinction sphere and an apparently empty Kryptonian mech cockpit. 288 487
  • Her vision can be obstructed in unfamiliar environments, as happened in the alien junkyard reached through Kairi Technology’s teleporter. 25

Amazonian Combat Training

Before publicly becoming Supergirl, Kara trained on Themyscira under Wonder Woman and the Amazons. 173

  • Retains effective hand-to-hand combat skills even when Kryptonite strips away most of her powers. 173
  • Uses grapples, throws, counters, and environmental weapons in fights against Kryptonians and mechanical opponents. 148 487
  • Her formal training is still insufficient against elite Kryptonian martial artists such as Faora. 291

Vulnerabilities

Kara is highly susceptible to Kryptonite, Red Kryptonite, and Red Sun radiation.

  • Airborne Kryptonite dust and radiation can cause severe pain, drain her strength, and leave her vulnerable to capture. 169
  • Kryptonite bullets and radiation-based military weapons are a continuing threat during the Superman Contingency Plan. 173
  • A Red Kryptonite trap temporarily depowered and imprisoned her. 201
  • Simulated Red Sun light rendered her powerless while held captive aboard Cyborg Superman’s ship. 442

Equipment / Items

  • Supergirl uniform — Red-and-blue Kryptonian costume bearing the House of El crest. 24

  • Extinction sphere — Kryptonian device Kara helped create with Clark as a contingency sanctuary for humanity; she later used it to return Mitopia’s inhabitants to Earth. 289 292

  • Clark / Superman — Kara’s younger cousin, Kal-El. Her mother charged her with protecting him after reaching Earth; together they created Mitopia as a last-resort sanctuary for humanity. 266 289

  • Lois Lane (Earth-2) — A beloved member of Kara’s Earth-2 family. Touching Lois’s hand restored Kara’s memories of her previous life. 415
  • Old Superman (Earth-2) — An Earth-2 survivor who revealed Kara’s erased history and regarded her as family. His plan to replace the current Earth created a moral conflict between them. 414 418
