Background / History

Sun Wukong's training is presented through more than one account. In one arrangement, True Person Yuding disguised himself as Subhuti, taught a stone monkey Dao arts, named him Sun Wukong, and later expelled him from the sect. Hun Xiu later identifies Patriarch Bodhi—not Tang Sanzang—as Sun Wukong's true master. 1034 1075

After causing havoc in Heaven and proclaiming himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong was refined in the Eight Trigrams Furnace. He emerged with Fiery Golden Eyes, an enhanced body, and greatly increased mana. 1034 1036

Sun Wukong then confronted Shakyamuni. After failing to pull his Golden Cudgel free from Shakyamuni's grasp and spitting on him, he was suppressed beneath Five Elements Mountain for five hundred years. 1037

In another pilgrimage sequence, Hun Xiu finds him imprisoned beneath Five Elements Mountain and dismisses him as a useless “monkey head.” After Tang Xuanzang removes the talisman, Sun Wukong remains burdened by the mountain's pressure until events surrounding Mount Buzhou alter his confinement. 912 925 926

Sun Wukong is a simian cultivator commonly described as a monkey or “monkey head.” During the pilgrimage, he bears a Golden Fillet on his head and carries the Ruyi Golden Cudgel. 929 938

Sun Wukong is proud, confrontational, and quick to act when his status is challenged. He insists on being recognized as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, repeatedly underestimates stronger opponents, and reacts violently to perceived disrespect. 969 971 972

Sun Wukong can also be impatient and cruel toward those close to him. Frustrated by Tang Xuanzang's chatter, he beats his master unconscious and forcibly takes him away from the pilgrimage party. 1102

Journey to the West

After becoming partially free from Five Elements Mountain, Sun Wukong begins the western pilgrimage under Tang Xuanzang's command. The Golden Fillet prevents him from escaping and forces his obedience. 929

The journey repeatedly exposes the limits of his power. He cannot overcome the Little White Dragon, is outmatched by Zhenyuanzi after the Ginseng Fruit Tree incident, and is captured alongside the entire pilgrimage party. 930 972

True and False Sun Wukong

The Buddhist Sect deploys the Six-Eared Macaque as a counterfeit Sun Wukong. The two monkeys possess identical mana, divine powers, weapons, and appearances, leaving even Hun Jian's Celestial Eye unable to expose the impostor. 1001 1038

True Person Yuding ultimately identifies the counterfeit, but Shakyamuni later intervenes directly to help the Six-Eared Macaque defeat the real Sun Wukong. 1039 1042 Sun Wukong survives and later joins the Buddhist Sect as the Victorious Fighting Buddha, while retaining the intention to eventually leave it. 1044

Joker's Transformation

A later storyline treats Joker as becoming Sun Wukong. Hun Xiu offers Joker the opportunity, and Joker proves compatible with the Golden Cudgel. 1084

To save White Crystal from Demon King, Joker dons the Golden Fillet and transforms into Sun Wukong. In this form, he catches Demon King's trident, defeats him, tears off his arm, and humiliates him by roasting and eating it. 1119 1120
