Background / History
Dragonite began as a Pokémon Egg belonging to the missing Dragonite Leader of Casseroya Lake. Its mother had entrusted the Egg to three Dragonair—one of them pink—because she was occupied caring for her aging Trainer, Lia. The Egg’s parents were both powerful Dragonite, allowing it to remain unhatched for a long time while accumulating energy for unusually rapid growth after birth 115 622.
After the Dragonite Leader disappeared, Gyarados seized the Dragonair’s territory and threatened the Egg. Luo Mu drove the Gyarados away with Swampert; recognizing that they could not protect the Egg alone, the Dragonair entrusted it to him 115. By the time Luo Mu returned to Casseroya Lake, the Egg had hatched and evolved into Dragonite, astonishing its caretakers with both its rapid development and strength 116.
Dragonite later reunited with the Dragonair who had raised it, protected them from six Gyarados, and invited them to move away from the lake’s danger with Luo Mu 116 117 120. It ultimately chose to remain with Luo Mu even after becoming Dragonite Island’s leader, treating the position as a responsibility rather than a reason to leave its trainer 673 680.
Appearance
Dragonite has orange-yellow scales, a soft cream-colored belly, large innocent-looking eyes, small head antennae, and a notably rounded build. Its appearance is repeatedly described as cute and harmless despite its overwhelming strength 120 672 756.
- Dense, unusually durable scales due to its Multiscale ability 318.
- Chubby claws and a rounded belly, traits Luo Mu uses as its “standard” Dragonite features 120.
- Female; initially identified by the pink Dragonair as a “Dragonite princess” 116.
- Has worn a lifeguard hat, vest, and whistle while monitoring students at Trainer Beach 130.
- Uses goggles made by Tinkatink during high-speed flights 508.
Personality
Dragonite is affectionate, curious, and strongly attached to Luo Mu. It was eager to revisit Casseroya Lake and meet the Dragonair who cared for it as an Egg, and it became visibly happy when reunited with Luo Mu after time apart 115 116 671.
Although gentle in ordinary life, Dragonite is fiercely protective of those it considers family. It confronted the Gyarados threatening the Dragonair, invited them to Luo Mu’s farm for safety, and takes its clan-leader responsibilities seriously without giving up its life with Luo Mu 117 120 680.
It also has a leisurely side: when not needed, it may float high in the sky to sunbathe or “contemplate Pokémon life,” and it enjoys playing in water at Thunderclap Lake 51 116.
Abilities & Skills
Flight and Wind Control
Dragonite is Luo Mu’s main long-distance transport Pokémon. Its flight speed far exceeds most flying Pokémon, while its refined air-current control protects both itself and its rider from high-speed wind pressure 39 508.
- Reached Mesagoza from the farm outside Los Platos in approximately fifteen minutes 39.
- Can fly from Porto Marinada to Casseroya Lake in around forty minutes 115.
- Broke the sound barrier while intercepting Hunter J’s airship, producing a sonic boom before disabling its levitation system 143.
- Uses Tailwind and flowing air currents to accelerate beyond opponents using conventional Extreme Speed 679.
- Can suppress surrounding violent winds and manipulate airflow precisely enough to cancel its own landing impact 515 756.
- Its maximum straight-line flight speed does not fully translate to close-quarters agility, particularly against highly maneuverable opponents such as Clair’s rain-boosted Kingdra 316.
Weather Manipulation
Dragonite can create and control major weather phenomena, combining rain, storms, lightning, and wind into battlefield control.
- Used Rain Dance and a wind domain to trap Moltres, neutralizing its attempts to escape with storms and Flamethrower 30.
- Can use Hurricane on a scale capable of developing into a super-typhoon 533.
- Its weather and wind control grew naturally over time, gradually recovering abilities weakened after its evolution 58 302.
Dragon Dance and Extreme Speed
Dragonite uses Dragon Dance for explosive physical and speed enhancement, then combines wind control with Extreme Speed for movement that opponents struggle to perceive.
- Performed six consecutive Dragon Dances to reach its enhancement limit before the Hunter J operation 142.
- Can combine Tailwind with Extreme Speed during aerial combat 679.
- Its specialized Extreme Speed was recognized as the reason it could outpace Goodra despite using fewer Dragon Dance boosts than expected 618.
Multiscale
Dragonite possesses the hidden ability Multiscale, granting exceptional damage reduction while its defensive scales remain intact.
- Its scales are denser and stronger than those of ordinary Dragonite, also reducing resistance during flight 318.
- Endured attacks from the Casseroya Dragonite Leader while deliberately holding back during sparring 237.
- Took a Grass-type Terastallized Tera Blast with virtually no damage due to its fourfold Grass resistance and Multiscale 331.
- Can allow incoming attacks to strike its scales when avoiding them would sacrifice a better tactical position 679.
Versatile Move Pool
Dragonite’s broad multi-type movepool is its defining combat advantage. Luo Mu relies on it when he needs a Pokémon capable of answering nearly any matchup 117.
- Electric-type: Thunder and Thunderbolt; used to defeat Moltres and instantly drop a Gyarados with a quadruple-effective strike 30 117.
- Dragon-type: Dragon Pulse, Dragon Claw, Dragon Tail, and Draco Meteor 30 316 679.
- Flying-type: Air Cutter, Heat Wave, Hurricane, Tailwind, Extreme Speed, and Aeroblast 315 316 533 618 672.
- Water-type: Hydro Pump; used to expose a buried Tera Crystal and counter Ground-type opponents 329 331.
- Defensive wind technique: Formed a flowing-wind shield that protected it from Kingdra’s Icy Wind and the aftermath of Draco Meteor 316.
