When the last point of light appeared on the map displayed on the television mounted on the wall, the entire square fell silent for an instant.
"Kemingda won the election!"
Deafening cheers immediately followed.
The cheers traveled across the streets and reached the roaring construction site.
"What are those people outside yelling about?" The broad, stout construction worker looked up and glanced behind him. "Is someone handing out money?"
"Sounds like Kemingda got elected?" The gaunt construction worker stopped what he was doing and listened quietly.
"Holy shit, he really got elected?" The broad construction worker's eyes widened. "I voted this morning too. Does that mean, rounding things up, I was the one who got him elected?"
"Maybe it was all thanks to your crucial vote," the gaunt construction worker said casually as he controlled a robot to tidy up the platform, "that Kemingda won."
"Come on, I know my own worth," the broad construction worker laughed as he cleared away the debris produced by the robot. "Come to think of it, I saw you vote this morning too. Who'd you vote for?"
"Kemingda," the gaunt construction worker replied casually.
"Hahahaha, looks like you watched that kid's video too." The broad construction worker kept laughing.
After laughing, he lowered his head again and quietly looked at the silent city behind him. The fiery red sunset was falling beyond the city's skyline, shining over the old buildings. "Do you think Kemingda can really change the Federation?"
"Who knows?" The gaunt construction worker kept his head lowered, calmly operating the machinery. "We're just lousy voters. We have nothing. The people who really decide where this world goes are those masters sitting on the top floors of the high-rises in the city center."
"True enough." The broad construction worker withdrew
