Background / History

Martial Graduate Dan resides in Danjia Village, Sanyuan Township, in a three-courtyard residence with horses, training equipment, servants, and a substantial collection of martial and military learning. Li Yaozu recommends Wei Tu to him as a long-term laborer prior to the county Martial Arts Examination. Dan agrees to employ Wei Tu but initially makes martial instruction conditional on Wei Tu's aptitude and his own judgment. He also expects annual tribute and seasonal gifts should Wei Tu attain official status. 12 13

In his youth, Dan apprenticed under the Golden Saber Hero Shi Ming, whom he identifies as Wei Tu's martial ancestor. Shi Ming later departed to seek an Innate Realm breakthrough in Qing Feng Prefecture and died in seclusion; his Golden Saber was returned to Dan by an old friend. 16 20

Dan never reaches the Qi Sensing Realm despite a lifetime of martial practice. He openly recognizes the limits of his own knowledge, particularly concerning the Grandmaster Realm, but preserves his master's legacy and eventually passes its deepest remaining manual to Wei Tu. 20 48 49

Once satisfied by Wei Tu's demonstration and persistence, he accepts him wholeheartedly as a disciple. 13 15 16

He values filial duty between master and disciple, requiring Wei Tu to retain the intention to support him in old age and see him to his end. At the same time, he is generous with teaching, possessions, and family resources, refusing to reduce Wei Tu to a servant of the wider Dan family. 16 18 22 49

Wei Tu's Archer's Stance alarms Dan, who suspects illicit training under another school. Wei Tu's complete demonstration of the Turtle Breath Qi Cultivation Technique convinces him that Wei Tu's ability stems from exceptional aptitude and relentless practice rather than deception. Establishing the Master–Disciple Lineage
