Background / History

Xinghua was a kitchen maid at the Li Residence and had known Wei Tu since childhood. She regularly looked after him, including giving him extra food; Wei Tu considered her the person closest to him in the world and did not forget her kindness after beginning martial cultivation 2 4.

Madam Li arranged Xinghua's marriage to Wei Tu. Xinghua had entered the Li Residence two years before him and was three years his senior; her parents had died early, and Madam Li regarded herself as half-family to her 5. After their wedding, the couple remained in the Li Residence, discussed saving for a house and educating their future children, and returned immediately to their respective work 5 6.

After marriage, Xinghua changed her conduct at work. Previously, she secretly kept portions of kitchen meat for herself; afterward, she served the Li household honestly and diligently, earning Madam Li's approval 6. She also sought permission to rent land so that she and Wei Tu could improve their circumstances 6 7.

When Wei Tu revealed his intention to leave servitude and take the Martial Arts Examination, Xinghua was initially frightened by the risk and reluctant to expose their savings. Seeing him lift a two-hundred-jin stone lock convinced her that he had the ability to pursue the examination, and she chose to support him 8.

While Wei Tu trained under Martial Graduate Dan, Xinghua managed affairs at home. Cai Xia later used the compensation from securing her own freedom to redeem Xinghua's deed of indenture, repaying Xinghua for past kindness in the Li Residence 41. After Wei Tu became a second-class Martial Scholar, he formally redeemed both Xinghua and Cai Xia and registered them as civilians under his household 43.

Xinghua and Wei Tu's first son was frail and died before reaching one month of age. After recovering, Xinghua gave birth to their daughter Wei Yan; she later conceived Wei Xiuwen, their surviving son 62 63 102. She is cautious about risks created by Wei Tu's ambitions, fearing the consequences of his attempt to buy freedom and later worrying that his rising status may leave her behind 8 10 25. Once persuaded of a course of action, however, she supports Wei Tu decisively, entrusting major decisions to his judgment and preparing what he needs for his journey 10 12.

Her experience as a maidservant has made her realistic about status and money. She warns Cai Xia that returning to a poor natal family could result in being sold again, then accepts Cai Xia into Wei Tu's household as companionship and support 43.

Xinghua is devoted to her family and direct in handling domestic concerns. She helps Wei Tu navigate prospective childhood betrothals for Wei Yan and actively seeks medicine to conceive again after the losses and difficulties of her earlier pregnancies 62 63.
