Background / History

Six years before Qiu Shuijing's arrival in Tianmen Town, an otherworldly sword descended toward the town. The incident transformed its inhabitants into Spiritual Natures, which subsequently appeared as living people and maintained the illusion of an inhabited town. Su Yun treated them as ordinary people, while Qiu Shuijing recognized their true nature. 4

Qiu Shuijing identified Su Yun's own Spiritual Nature while observing it cultivate the basic Master's Qi Cultivation Chapter. The technique only nourishes qi and vital energy and contains no method for developing Spiritual Abilities, making Su Yun's already-formed Yellow Bell anomalous. 4

Nature and Characteristics

A Spiritual Nature can think, visualize, and continue cultivation independently. Qiu Shuijing theorized that Su Yun formed his through relentless visualization of a Yellow Bell: after imagining it day after day, the visualization continued even while he slept, eventually producing a Spiritual Nature. 4

The wider cultivation framework treats the Spirit as concentrated mental will and the aggregation of a person's thoughts. What one learns, comprehends, and repeatedly contemplates becomes imprinted upon the Spirit and may be projected in the Spirit World as a Spiritual Ability. 119 153

In later scholarship, Su Yun and Yu Qingluo identify the human “spirit” as a form of mental energy comparable to the ancient universe's human soul. Unlike beings possessing three souls and seven spirits, humans of the Immortal Dao Universe possess only this human soul/spirit. 791

Connection to Spiritual Abilities

Spiritual Abilities reflect a cultivator's deepest thoughts. For Spirit Scholars, they are formed when thought fuses with Blood Essence; their forms vary according to what their owner studies or contemplates, including writings, architecture, flowers, beasts, gods, demons, and weapons. 43

The power of a Spiritual Ability depends on the strength of its associated Spirit. Spirit Infusion cultivation strengthens both the Spirit and its Spiritual Abilities, while direct combat requires mobilizing the Spirit rather than relying on techniques alone. 119 153

At a more fundamental level, spiritual power arises when thoughts are highly condensed. Su Yun concluded that runes and Spiritual Powers are manifestations of thought transformed into spiritual power, prompting him to revise his cultivation toward the dual cultivation of brain and Spirit. 563

Su Yun's Spiritual Nature

Su Yun's Spiritual Nature produced the Great Yellow Bell from its thoughts. When Qiu Shuijing first observed it, it was cultivating only the Master's Qi Cultivation Chapter, despite the Yellow Bell already existing as Su Yun's Spiritual Ability. 4

The Great Yellow Bell later displayed imprints of Flood Dragons and White Apes, whose diagrams continuously practiced their respective movements upon its rotating markings. 43
