With the black veil overhead blocking the light, the maze was very dark even during the day. Combined with the dense leaves of the laurel grove, it became darker still.
In such darkness, black crossbow bolts were even harder to spot.
A hidden arrow from behind was often the deadliest and most damaging. Pomona racked her brains but could not think of any way she could help Severus in that regard.
Instead, she thought of Ariana.
When Albus, Grindelwald, and Aberforth had fought in a chaotic melee, Ariana had wanted to help, only to be struck by someone's spell in the confusion and die.
Likewise, when James and Sirius had bullied Severus, Lily had only made things worse by trying to help him out.
James might originally have only wanted to tease Severus, but once Lily showed up, the nature of things changed. He had to settle who was superior between himself and Severus.
It involved a man's "pride." It was so perfectly "logical" that she could not be bothered to guess anymore. What mattered now was luring that woman Nadia out of the darkness, so she would not launch sneak attacks like Bellatrix.
Pomona turned and looked at the empty tops of the pillars in the fourth level of the maze. Where had those strange birds gone now?
"Where are you going?" Felix asked.
Pomona ignored him.
She needed to find somewhere far from the entrance to the fifth level of the maze. Perhaps Severus and the others would retreat when they could no longer hold on. Then she would make a big commotion in the new location.
The celestial music within the maze still played, and the sirens' song remained lovely. Yet neither Voldemort nor Severus was affected by it. Instead, she herself had fallen into an illusion.
