Erkstag was a terrifying place. It was located beneath what looked like an abandoned subway entrance in Berlin. Inside, the prison was a maze-like system of underground tunnels, pitch-black except for lamps illuminated by glowing butterflies.
The prisoners inside were all hung upside down. When they were imprisoned, all their belongings, including their wands, were confiscated, which meant they had no way to save themselves.
When Newt found Theseus, the lamp belonging to Theseus was almost extinguished. Newt tried to break him out, but they were discovered by the prison's "warden."
Azkaban had Dementors; Erkstag used Manticores. She fed on prisoners.
"Merlin's beard." Pomona could not help exclaiming. "That's absolutely dreadful."
Tina smiled faintly and took a sip of tea.
"He saved me too." Tina looked into her teacup. "I was in the Death Chamber at the Magical Congress of the United States of America. In a pool full of poison, I could see my happy memories, and I just walked toward them. Luckily, he appeared in time."
"And then you fell in love with him?" Pomona asked with a smile.
What a cliché hero-saves-the-damsel story.
"Not enough for me to abandon everything in America and follow him to Britain." Tina smiled gently. "Have you ever been in a long-distance relationship?"
Pomona froze.
"I've talked to someone through a Two-Way Mirror."
"I asked whether you've ever been in a long-distance relationship. What does that have to do with anything?" Tina looked at Pomona strangely.
"You can still talk face-to-face through a Two-Way Mirror, can't you?" Pomona said.
"You wouldn't understand." Tina took another sip of tea.
Pomona thought of the young couples at school. They were always clinging to each other, as though glued together.
She had not expected people sixty years ago to be so open-minded.
