Background / History
Flender was a member of the Golden Iron Triangle alongside Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong. Within the trio, he was known as the Flying Horn, while Liu Erlong was the Killing Horn. After the group fell apart, Flender and Yu Xiaogang went many years without meeting 30 32 148.
As Shrek Academy’s dean, Flender maintained demanding admissions standards despite its poor facilities and persistent financial problems. Qin Ming, its first graduate, was once its most outstanding student and held its record for reaching rank thirty fastest. By the time Qin Ming returned, Flender acknowledged that the current students would likely be the academy’s final intake: the teachers were growing older, funding remained unresolved, and he hoped they could eventually retire 32 108 110.
Appearance
- Crystal glasses: Wears glasses resting on his nose 108.
- Voice and laugh: Has a hoarse, sinister-sounding laugh 110.
- Academy insignia: Initially wears only a small Shrek emblem on his left breast rather than the students’ conspicuous tournament uniform 155.
- Later tournament attire: Adopts the same green team uniform after Shrek’s opening victory and proudly leads the students into the arena 174.
Personality
Flender is famously stingy—described as an “iron rooster” unwilling to part with a feather. He makes students fund their own lodging through soul battles, resents supporting Yu Xiaogang and Tang San without payment, and looks for opportunities to shift expenses onto others. His pursuit of sponsorships eventually becomes a major source of academy income 55 65 68 155 195.
His thrift coexists with genuine educational ambition. He wants his students to become Titled Douluo and surpass him, accepts an exchange arrangement to secure better cultivation facilities, and insists that students retain control over their own earnings. Even while disliking Tang San, he rescues him and Yu Xiaogang because they belong to Shrek Academy 112 119 128 134.
Flender is proud and unruly, but responds warmly to sincere respect. He returns the Heaven Dou Royal Academy committee’s courteous reception with formal junior etiquette, and restrains Zhao Wuji when Snow Star Prince insults Shrek. With Yu Xiaogang, however, he becomes increasingly impatient and calculating; their secret intimate relationship complicates his authority and makes him fear damage to his reputation 65 68 133 135.
