Background

Wang Yuan was an Innate Grandmaster in the mortal Martial Dao before a fortuitous encounter allowed him to enter immortal cultivation. He arrived at Great River Market around the same time as Luo Chen, but began with a vastly stronger martial foundation and sufficient courage to join demon-beast hunting parties. Luo Chen initially accompanied those expeditions as a laborer and supplier. 18

Originally broad-minded and forthright, Wang Yuan was targeted by several mid-stage Qi Refining cultivators, robbed of everything, and beaten nearly to death. After recovering, he entered the Ancient Origin Mountain Range alone, returned carrying a Tier 1 demon beast corpse, and covertly killed the cultivators responsible. He then joined the Mountain Shattering Gang, where his sale of suspiciously acquired magic tools and cultivation methods established his feared reputation. 18

His pursuit of Body Refinement stemmed partly from his mortal inheritance. After killing a great devil in the martial world, he obtained Bright Spirit Breaking Evil, a method that used nether qi to temper the body and refine essence into qi. Wang Yuan adapted this inheritance toward body cultivation, while warning Luo Chen that its original creator had ultimately been driven mad by accumulated nether qi. 119

Appearance

Wang Yuan is a heavily built, bald cultivator usually seen in coarse gray hemp robes. His body bears the visible results of extreme refinement: dense musculature, powerful qi and blood, and bones described as white jade beneath his skin. 148 250

  • A sword scar is visible on his face. 476
  • His back bears the engraved Blood Evil Spirit-Seizing Array. 250
  • His Giant Spirit Transformation can expand him from roughly seven feet to three zhang tall. 378
  • His transformations routinely destroy ordinary clothing because of the sudden expansion of his body. 275

Personality

Wang Yuan’s early forthrightness was tempered by betrayal and violence. He became more cautious, ruthless, and pragmatic after being robbed in Great River Market, but never lost the direct bearing of a Martial Dao Grandmaster. 18

He is calm outside battle yet intensely competitive in combat. He seeks formidable opponents, values practical experience over empty prestige, and repeatedly uses life-and-death pressure to advance his Body Refinement. 179 477 484

Despite his blood-path methods, Wang Yuan is notably detached from authority. He defended Luo Tian Sect when Luo Chen was absent, not for rank or power, but to preserve its independence and protect those connected to him. 780

Abilities & Skills

Ancient Body Refinement

Wang Yuan follows an ancient body-refinement path built upon Martial Dao, qi and blood, willpower, and later Blood Dao methods.

  • Possesses a physique comparable to Foundation Establishment cultivators even when his immortal cultivation lagged behind. 148
  • Can withstand Foundation Establishment Spiritual Sense through his tempered will, though doing so severely strains his mind and body. 121
  • Uses four forms of force—Manifested, Hidden, Transformative, and Pill Force—in close combat. 484
  • His body cultivation requires immense resources, especially demon-beast flesh, blood, and specialized body-refinement materials. 475 811
  • His early path lacked techniques capable of reliably countering Foundation Establishment magic tools, a weakness he worked to overcome through dual cultivation and martial innovation. 148 1152

Giant Spirit Transformation

Wang Yuan enlarges his body into a massive combat form, combining qi, blood, force, and later principles derived from Myriad Paths Convergence.

  • Reached a height of three zhang while resisting the Thunder Prison Grand Formation. 378
  • Greatly improves physical power, resilience, reach, and the scale of his qi-and-blood attacks. 378 477
  • Incorporates qi absorption and armor-manifestation concepts to make the form more flexible and powerful. 478
  • Ordinary robes cannot withstand the transformation. 275

Blood Evil Spirit-Seizing Array

An unorthodox Blood Dao array engraved across Wang Yuan’s back, modified from the Heavenly Craft Spirit-Seizing Array with Blood Path methods.

  • Uses Wang Yuan’s body as the foundation, blood as the source, qi as the guide, and soul as the means of seizure. 250
  • Generates blood snakes that devour a target’s essence blood, physical essence, cultivation foundation, and soul. 250
  • Enabled his eventual Foundation Establishment by consuming Huo Hu’s foundation and soul. 250
  • His first attempt, using Duan Qiankun, failed and left him destabilized by a remnant soul. 184 186
  • The array has only three total opportunities for use; failure cannot be remedied by switching to another Foundation Establishment path. 250

Qi Sensing

A body-cultivation perception technique developed through his understanding of qi, blood, soul, will, and physique.

  • Detects the qi emitted by living bodies without requiring Divine Sense. 476
  • Allowed him to identify Zhao Yingzi’s true body within her thirty-six-mirror formation. 476
  • Compensates for a Body Refinement cultivator’s normal lack of Divine Sense. 476

Martial Arts and Created Techniques

Wang Yuan is an unusually gifted martial theorist who creates and adapts methods rather than following a fixed inheritance.

  • Created Bright Spirit Five Qi Fist by combining Bright Spirit Breaking Evil, Qi Body Source Unification, and Five Viscera Nourishing Fist. 321
  • Developed Blood God Tribulation Finger, capable of piercing powerful Magic Treasure attacks. 476
  • Created or refined Immortal Returns to Penglai and Blood Dissolving Demon Finger as advanced qi-and-blood techniques. 849
  • Fused thirty-six Divine Wind strands and thirty-six Earth Fiends into Divine Adamantine Battle Qi, a technique capable of contending with Magic Treasures and True Artifacts. 849 1152
  • Helped deduce incomplete martial techniques, including Moon Step and the Wind Leg framework of the Feng Yue Thundercloud Immortal Path. 849

Equipment

  • Dragon Slaying Blade — Powerful saber used to defeat the Blood Path cultivator Xiao Wuyan at the Dao Discussion Stage. 64
  • Top-grade long-blade Magic Tool — Extends and amplifies his qi-and-blood blade qi. 274
  • Golden gloves — Used to reinforce his heavy punches against Foundation Establishment opponents. 182
  • Across-River Iron Chains — High-grade arcane magic tool that seals off an area and restricts enemy movement. 182
  • Dragon Tiger Wrist — Wrist artifact capable of releasing Dragon’s Adamantine Tiger’s Malevolence. 281
  • Wind Pouch and ten strands of Divine Wind Gale Force — Rewarded by Di Wuqi after Wang Yuan’s Dao Discussion victories. 478
  • Natal True Fire branch — Given by Luo Chen as an emergency measure; can temporarily unleash greater physical potential at the cost of severe weakness afterward. 830

Relationships

  • Luo Chen — Longtime friend, cultivation companion, and mutual protector. Wang Yuan guided Luo Chen in combat and Body Refinement, while Luo Chen refined pills, protected Wang Yuan during his Foundation Establishment ritual, and repeatedly intervened to save him. 18 200 250 484
  • Mi Shuhua — Former Mountain Shattering Gang leader. Mi elevated Wang Yuan from Protector to Elder, but their relationship grew politically strained as Wang Yuan’s potential became impossible to ignore. 66 121
  • Min Longyu — Formation specialist who helped Wang Yuan perfect the Blood Evil Spirit-Seizing Array. 250
  • Duan Feng — Ally who supported Wang Yuan’s study of restrictions and helped improve his harsh lake-bottom cave residence. 198
  • Zeng Yilong — Disciple and inheritor of Wang Yuan’s Martial Dao and Body Refinement path. 317 475
  • Qiu Liangyue — Unwitting victim of Luo Chen and Wang Yuan’s scheme against the Fu Family; she remembers Wang Yuan as the “brutish robber cultivator” who forced her to use a Blood Talisman. 301
  • Huo Hu — Sacrificial target of Wang Yuan’s successful Blood Fiend spirit-seizing ritual. 250

Story Role

Mountain Shattering Gang and the Dao Discussion Stage

Wang Yuan became one of the Mountain Shattering Gang’s most dangerous fighters. At the Dao Discussion Stage, he wielded the Dragon Slaying Blade against Xiao Wuyan, an Eighth-Layer Qi Refining Blood Path Demon Cultivator. Wang Yuan’s superior blood qi, saber mastery, and Ancient Body Refinement allowed him to destroy Xiao’s blood-colored Flood Dragon and bloody hands before killing him in a single strike. 64

After the gang’s victory, Mi Shuhua restructured the organization and appointed Wang Yuan as an Elder. He was ordered to organize control over the Lancang Waterway, an assignment Luo Chen suspected was both a promotion and an attempt to distance Wang Yuan from the gang’s central authority. 66

Blood Path Foundation Establishment

Wang Yuan’s desire to reach Foundation Establishment led him to the forbidden Blood Evil Spirit-Seizing Array. His first attempt to seize Duan Qiankun’s Dao Foundation failed, leaving his cultivation unstable and Duan Qiankun’s remnant soul lodged within him. 184 186

After years of preparation, soul-strengthening through Spirit Communication Pills, and Min Longyu’s improvements to the array, Wang Yuan performed a second ritual using Huo Hu. The attempt succeeded, making him the Luo Tian Association’s third Foundation Establishment cultivator. 250

Blood Demon Rumors

Wang Yuan’s blood-path inheritance and ability to heal through absorbed essence blood caused him to be linked to the feared “Blood Demon” of the Far Eastern Six Domains. Luo Chen acknowledged that the rumors matched some of Wang Yuan’s known abilities, but later evidence showed that at least one supposed Blood Demon was actually Xuan Yu of Peach Mountain. 370 393

Luo Chen nevertheless chose to protect Wang Yuan, viewing their shared history and Wang Yuan’s past aid as a debt that could not be abandoned for the sake of public opinion. 370

Defender of Luo Tian Sect

During Luo Chen’s long absence, Wang Yuan defended the weakened Luo Tian Sect, expelled Di Wuqi’s attempt to absorb it, and later killed Di Wuqi to deter further internal scheming. He restored the sect’s independent status despite having little interest in authority for its own sake. 780

Founding War and Later Battles

Wang Yuan’s Body Refinement made him a central combatant during the Founding War. He defeated multiple Foundation Establishment assassins in succession, fought three Dream Spring Cave cultivators at once, and resisted the Spiritual Pressure of Golden Core prodigy Yu Jiaolong. 476 477 478

At Snow Wolf Plain, he fought an Early-Stage Tier 3 Snow Wolf King head-on and gained insight into Intent Gathering and Core Embrace. He was critically injured by Hundred Losses Daoist’s assassination attempt, but Luo Chen drove the assassin away and saved him with Dragon Slaying Art. 484

Trivia

  • Wang Yuan’s habitual size-changing technique is not derived from Sky Peng Transformation; it is an earlier application of vitality, blood, and physical control. 177
  • Despite his reserved demeanor, he once ate all the meat on a table while telling Luo Chen about his past. 119
  • His Giant Spirit Transformation is a frequent source of embarrassment because it destroys his robes. 275
