Background / History

Neji was born into the Hyuga Clan's Branch Family and bore the Caged Bird curse mark. He understood the clan system as one in which the Main Family served as the public “face,” while Branch Family members were expected to protect it from the shadows and absorb its dangers. 42

Denied access to Main Family techniques, Neji independently developed both Eight Trigrams Palm: Heavenly Spin and Sixty-Four Palms. Heavenly Spin was originally designed to compensate for the Byakugan's blind spot behind its user. 195

His Chunin Exam match against Sasuke established their rivalry. Neji's Heavenly Spin neutralized Sasuke's clones and Fire Style attacks, while his Sixty-Four Palms pushed through severe burns rather than abandon the assault; Sasuke ultimately defeated him. 20 21 42

After Monkey Orange explained the political structure behind the Hyuga system, Neji chose to support Sasuke's future Hokage bid. He researched past Hokage successions, identified strength and political lineage as key prerequisites, and advised Sasuke to become a jonin instructor to cultivate a future support base. 42 61 138 139

Neji is a pale, white-eyed Hyuga shinobi whose appearance changes alongside his rejection of the Branch Family's expected role. He cut his formerly long hair short as a personal declaration of independence from the clan's power structure. 164

Personality

Initially arrogant and fatalistic, Neji believed that his birth into the Branch Family defined the limits of his life. His defeat by Sasuke and the oppression he experienced under the Caged Bird mark gradually redirected that bitterness into political ambition and a determination to alter the Hyuga Clan's structure. 19 42 164

He is exceptionally analytical. Rather than merely backing Sasuke out of friendship, Neji studied Konoha's succession history, assessed rival candidates, and designed a long-term route toward Sasuke's Hokage candidacy. 42 61 138

Neji is also proud of his talent and resents being measured solely against Sasuke. He accepted Orochimaru's challenge to learn Eight Trigrams Empty Palm in three days specifically to prove his own worth. 195 202
