Background

During the Second Shinobi World War, Jiraiya encountered the Rain Hidden Village war orphans Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan. Against Orochimaru's proposal to kill them, he took them in, cared for them, and trained them in ninjutsu for three years. Their eventual transformation into Akatsuki members became one of his deepest regrets 334 395.

Jiraiya returned to Konoha after a long period of travel. Sasuke found him spying on women at a hot spring and asked to become his disciple. Initially wary of Sasuke's Uchiha heritage and fixation on revenge, Jiraiya ultimately accepted him after hearing Sasuke's claimed prophecy dream 11 12.

He later accepted Naruto as well, impressed by Naruto's persistence and Nine-Tails-powered Harem Technique. The three lived together closely enough to be regarded as a family within Konoha 28 134.

After Konoha's weakened state demanded stronger leadership, Jiraiya accepted the position of Fifth Hokage. He subsequently handled village administration, missions, clan disputes, military expansion, and intelligence matters while continuing to guide Naruto and Sasuke 75 77 200 281.

Appearance

Jiraiya is distinguished by his long silver hair and physically imposing build. His appearance changes markedly while using Sage Mode.

  • Long silver hair, which he can harden and manipulate as a weapon or armor 13 395.
  • Wears a forehead protector marked with the character for “Oil,” reflecting his use of toad oil in Fire Release 75.
  • In Sage Mode, develops toad-like facial features, markings around his eyes and cheeks, and usually carries Fukasaku and Shima on his shoulders 134.
  • Wore a dark-blue suit with an orange tie when returning to Konoha after the Rain mission 403.

Personality

Jiraiya is flamboyant, lecherous, and easily distracted by attractive women, frequently peeping at bathhouses or abandoning serious conversations to pursue them. His students openly call him the “Perverted Sage,” and he does little to reject the label 11 13 28.

Behind this behavior, he is an attentive and demanding mentor. He recognizes his disciples' emotional burdens, pushes them through unconventional training, and teaches them to understand themselves rather than merely pursue power. He is especially concerned that Sasuke's hatred of Itachi will consume him 13 29 67.

As Hokage, Jiraiya can be decisive and politically assertive, but he acknowledges his own shortcomings in administration and past policy decisions. His commitment to Konoha, lasting peace, and the Child of Prophecy consistently shapes his choices 77 200 283.

Abilities & Skills

Fire Release

Jiraiya possesses highly advanced Fire Release, combining overwhelming output with precise Chakra control.

  • Fire Release: Flame Bullet — Fires a condensed, oil-infused flame projectile that is faster and more destructive than an ordinary fireball 13 75.
  • Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet — Produces a chakra-guided fire dragon that can split into multiple pursuing streams 13.
  • Great Flame Bullet — A Sage Mode-enhanced Flame Bullet whose power is described as nearly one hundred times that of an ordinary Flame Bullet 134.
  • Uses toad oil to strengthen his Fire Release; the oil prevents Konan from dispersing her body into paper 98 395.
  • Taught Sasuke the distinctions between Chakra nature transformation and substance transformation through his oil-based flames 75.

Rasengan

Jiraiya teaches the Rasengan as an advanced exercise in Chakra rotation and form transformation.

  • Demonstrated the technique by launching a wild boar through a tree, leaving a deep spiral wound 74.
  • Trained Sasuke and Naruto through water-balloon bursting, requiring irregular rotational Chakra flow 74.
  • Created Fire Release: Gallant Rasengan, combining Fire Release Chakra with the Rasengan's compressed rotation 146 147.
  • The Gallant Rasengan causes a powerful explosion, but its recoil can injure its user without sufficient protection 147.

Sage Mode

Jiraiya can enter Sage Mode with the assistance of Fukasaku and Shima, the elder toads of Mount Myōboku.

  • Greatly enhances his Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu 134.
  • Requires time to prepare: his hands must remain clasped while summoning the two elder toads 134.
  • His Sage Mode is imperfect, leaving visible frog-like traits on his face and body 401.
  • Uses the elder toads to divide the tasks of movement and natural-energy cultivation, extending his Sage Mode duration 402.
  • Fought Naruto's Six-Tails transformation in Sage Mode and protected Sasuke during the battle 134.

Sage Arts and Genjutsu

Jiraiya employs powerful Sage Arts with Fukasaku and Shima.

  • Sage Art: Goemon 395.
  • Sage Art: Super Great Ball Rasengan 395.
  • Sage Art: Needle Senbon 395.
  • Genjutsu: Frog Song — A cooperative auditory genjutsu performed with Fukasaku and Shima. It defeated the Animal, Human, and Preta Paths of Pain, but heavily strained the elders' throats 395.
  • The Frog Song victory was temporary; Jiraiya later discovered that the defeated Paths could be restored 397.

Toad Summoning and Barrier Techniques

Jiraiya has a close contract with Mount Myōboku and can summon toads for combat, communication, and support.

  • Summoned Gamahiro to crush a three-headed snake during Konoha's defense 53.
  • Trained Sasuke in the Summoning Technique, leading to Sasuke's first summoning of the Iron Arm Toad 66.
  • Used Toad Mouth Bind to trap Itachi and Kisame inside a giant toad's stomach 71.
  • Used Toad Gourd Prison to isolate and defeat an Animal Path body of Pain 397.
  • Used Toad Flat Shadow Manipulation Technique alongside a Shadow Clone to deceive Konan during his infiltration 395.

Hair Manipulation

Jiraiya can channel Yin Release Chakra through his hair, transforming it into a flexible offensive and defensive weapon.

  • Ninja Art: Needle Jizō — Hardens his silver hair into armor capable of blocking kunai and paper shuriken 13 395.
  • Can extend and control his hair to strike, restrain, or bind opponents 13 395.
  • Lion’s Mane Hair Technique was used during his battle against Pain 395.

Intelligence and Infiltration

Jiraiya is an experienced intelligence gatherer with a long-running information network.

  • Infiltrated the Rain Hidden Village disguised as a travel writer, gathering information about Pain through local civilians 394.
  • Identified Konan through her appearance and paper-based techniques, confirming that his former student had joined Akatsuki 334 395.
  • Deduced that Pain's bodies shared vision and later discovered that they were corpses of ninja he had encountered in the past 395 397.
  • His intelligence network uncovered information on Orochimaru, Akatsuki, Root, other villages, and international instability 163 200 344.

  • Konan — Former disciple from the Rain Hidden Village. Jiraiya is devastated to find her serving Pain and Akatsuki, while Konan considers their past beyond repair 334 395.
  • Nagato/Pain — Former disciple and former candidate for the Child of Prophecy. Jiraiya ultimately resolves to defeat him after witnessing the destructive path he has chosen 395.
