Background / History
The Phoenix Force is described as one of Marvel's Three Great Forces, alongside the Chaos Force and the Goblin Force. It is an immortal, chaotic, ever-changing existence born at the beginning of all things. 64 375 434
It serves as the source of psychic power and as a link to the minds and spirits of all existing and future beings in the infinite Multiverse. It also stores and controls the life and emotional energy reserved for future generations. 368
Jean Grey initially carries only a fragment of the Force and cannot fully control it. Her fear and resistance contribute to the Force's destructive influence and the emergence of Dark Phoenix. 368 369 376
Su Quan possesses a separate, independently controlled Phoenix Force. His version clashes with Jean's because the two forces mutually exclude one another, though his Force gradually suppresses the influence of the Phoenix Force within her. 374 376
After defeating Dark Phoenix, Su Quan begins distributing portions of his Force to trusted followers as Phoenix Apostles. This does not weaken his Force; its dispersed fragments instead strengthen its authority. 377 392
Su Quan later absorbs the Phoenix Force from a young parallel-universe Jean Grey, significantly strengthening his own. He subsequently identifies himself as the Phoenix Force while using a bestowed fragment to judge and burn the Debari leader Smith to ash. 475 598
Abilities & Properties
Life, Emotion, and Psychic Power
The Phoenix Force embodies life, emotion, and psychic power on a multiversal scale. 369 375
- Links the minds and spirits of existing and future life across the infinite Multiverse. 368
- Stores life and emotional energy for future generations. 368 375
- Grants immense telepathy, telekinesis, and other psionic abilities. 375
- Provides cosmic perception and intuition capable of perceiving past, present, and future events. 375
Energy Manipulation
The Force can control, absorb, convert, and release any form of energy within the Multiverse. 375
- Absorbs external energy, including solar-flare energy. 597
- Can consume stellar, galactic, or even universal-scale energy to replenish itself. 375
- Its fragments can be absorbed or contested by other Phoenix Force users; the stronger force determines the outcome. 375 475
- Forms a life-and-death conversion cycle with the Goblin Force, whose devoured energy can become Phoenix Force life energy. 470
Matter and Reality Manipulation
The Phoenix Force can alter matter from the subatomic level upward. 375
- Recombines, decomposes, transforms, and creates matter. 375
- Performs mass-energy conversion and creation from nothing. 375
- Alters reality on cosmic, parallel-universe, or multiversal scales depending on its completeness. 375
- Can dominate causality, weave destiny, disregard causality, and alter history in principle. 375
Space-Time Manipulation
The Force has authority over spatial dimensions, timelines, and time-space coordinates. 368 375
- Creates, manipulates, destroys, or deletes spatial and temporal coordinates. 368
- Enables spatial teleportation, spatial stasis, temporal teleportation, temporal stasis, dimension manipulation, and timeline manipulation. 375 379
- Can theoretically destroy dimensions, timelines, and parallel universes. 368 375
- Su Quan has initially developed spatial teleportation and limited dimensional overlap, but has not mastered all of the Force's theoretical time-space functions. 379
Resurrection and Restoration
The Phoenix Force can restore life even after extreme destruction. 392 434
- Resurrects the dead and restores them to full health. 392 477
- Regrows lost body parts, as demonstrated when Colossus's severed arm is restored. 392
- Heals physical disabilities, including Professor X's paralysis after his resurrection. 477
- Requires psychic compatibility for a host to safely wield it for resurrection. 434 457
Hosts and Phoenix Apostles
Individuals usually possess only fragments of the complete Phoenix Force rather than the entire entity. 368 377
- Hosts may be unable to control their fragment, particularly when they fear or resist it. 369 392
- Strong psychic users are the most compatible wielders. 434
- Phoenix Apostles receive portions of Su Quan's Force while contributing to its continued growth. 377 392
- Known Apostles include the White Queen, Colossus, Jean Grey, and the young Jean Grey. 388 392 483
Dark Phoenix Influence
The Force can influence a host's personality and thoughts, especially when its power exceeds the host's control. 376
- Jean Grey's Dark Phoenix is a secondary personality born under the Force's influence and control. 376
- Dark Phoenix and the Phoenix Force have a master-servant relationship rather than a symbiotic one. 376
- Removing the Force does not necessarily erase a secondary personality already created by its influence. 376
- A host who controls the Force can use it constructively rather than destructively. 477
Relationships
- Jean Grey — Primary host encountered by Su Quan; her fear of the Force and Dark Phoenix prevents her from initially using its full potential. She later learns to wield Su Quan's Phoenix Force with control. 369 392 481
- Dark Phoenix — A secondary personality created through the Phoenix Force's influence on Jean Grey; it wields the Force's power aggressively but persists even without it. 375 376
- Su Quan — Possesses an independent Phoenix Force, distributes fragments to Apostles, absorbs other Phoenix Force fragments, and eventually declares himself the Phoenix Force. 374 377 475 598
- Goblin Force — The Phoenix Force's life-based opposite; the Goblin Force represents death and hunger, yet the two can form a cycle that converts death energy into life energy. 470 475
- White Queen — Receives a portion of Su Quan's Phoenix Force, enhancing her psychic power and status. 388 457
- Colossus — Resurrected, healed, and made a Phoenix Apostle by Su Quan. 392
- Young Jean Grey — A parallel-universe host whose Phoenix Force is absorbed by Su Quan; she later becomes a Phoenix Apostle. 475 483
