Background

Jean Grey is a red-haired psychic mutant and a student of Professor X. She works alongside Ororo Munroe, whom she calls Storm, and initially attempts to stop Magneto after reading Toad's memories through telepathy. Instead, she witnesses Su Quan easily defeat Magneto and learns that Su Quan considers her far more significant because of the Phoenix Force within her. 368

Before gaining control, Jean lives in fear of the Phoenix Force. It causes nightmares, makes her afraid to sleep or be around others, and leaves her constantly worried that she will hurt someone when she loses control. She initially regards it as an evil force and asks Su Quan to remove it, but he explains that fragments would remain and eventually return. 369

Jean's prolonged suppression of the Phoenix Force contributes to the existence of Dark Phoenix, a destructive second personality. Even after Su Quan suppresses Jean's original Phoenix Force with his own, he warns that Dark Phoenix will continue to exist independently of the force itself. 376
