Background
Li Qingfeng was a wealthy young scholar from Eight Directions City. Having passed the Cultivated Talent examination at roughly seventeen or eighteen, he initially intended to pursue the imperial examinations. His family owned rice, flour, and silk shops as well as farmland, allowing them to support both his education and later cultivation 8 9.
He found the corpse of the demonic cultivator Zhao Shixian, buried it, and took Zhao’s Blood Fiend Great Method and the Venerable Soul Banner. Believing both to be an immortal inheritance, Li vowed that he would give Zhao a proper reburial if he ever succeeded in cultivation 8.
Li spent three months studying the cultivation method, researching meridians, and cultivating at every Yin-Yang transition before finally sensing Qi. His parents mistook his exhaustion and obsessive routine for illness or ghostly bewitchment until he resumed the appearance of ordinary scholarly study 8.
After sensing Qi, Li Qingfeng was recognized as the Banner Master by Tu Shan Jun, the Banner’s intelligent Master Soul. He rapidly reached Qi Condensation First Layer and began relying on the Venerable Soul Banner while concealing his cultivation from his friends 9.
Personality
Li Qingfeng began as an earnest, diligent scholar whose persistence compensated for his poor aptitude. He refused to abandon cultivation despite three months without progress and repeatedly chose study and practice over social gatherings 8.
His early confidence as a cultivator gave him a sense of distance from his non-cultivating friends, but his encounter with the Imp Ghost forced him to recognize his weakness and mortality 9 11. He remained reluctant to harm people directly, hesitating when interrogating Sun Adviser despite his determination to locate Meng Zhen 16.
Meng Zhen’s death and the massacre of the Li family transformed Li’s hesitation into a consuming drive for revenge. He became increasingly ruthless, consumed Yin Soul Pills despite their damage to his body, and declared Zhang Wanlong’s death his sole objective 24 25 28. Even then, he could not bring himself to kill Yang Lingu, instead severing their friendship before Yang’s suicide 29.
Appearance
Li Qingfeng was originally known as a scholar with a refined appearance. Following his rapid advancement through Yin Soul Pills, his body became marked by Yin Qi and blood fiend influence.
- Pale complexion and visible Yin Qi after advancing to Qi Condensation Second Layer 28.
- Bloodshot eyes and withered, disheveled hair during his pursuit of revenge 29.
- His Living Soul retained the appearance of a scholar after being absorbed into the Venerable Soul Banner, though it had undergone Ghost Transformation 153.
Abilities & Skills
Blood Fiend Great Method
Li cultivated the Blood Fiend Sect’s basic, attribute-less Qi Condensation method.
- Suitable for any Spiritual Root, though its Qi conversion was not particularly strong 8.
- Uses the Yin-Yang transition to sense and guide Qi.
- Allows early cultivation through Refining Essence into Qi, supported by food and bodily vitality 9.
- Blood Fiend Qi could aggravate malice and inflict severe strain during rapid advancement 18 28.
- Li possessed Five Spiritual Roots, regarded as inferior or “false” spiritual roots 11 15.
Demon Ape Will-Fixing Fist
Tu Shan Jun taught Li the Demon Ape Will-Fixing Fist through dreams; Li transcribed the manual after waking 12.
- Used to train Li’s body and combat ability under Zhao Shixian’s commanded ghost 14.
- Helped wear away the malice accumulated through the Blood Fiend Great Method 22.
- Its early forms emphasized endurance and violence, while its third stance calmed the heart 18.
- Enabled Li to overwhelm a sturdier Qi Cultivator in close combat during his final assault on the Prefectural Manor 29.
Spirit Official Dharma Eye
A basic spell available to Li as a Qi Cultivator.
- Allowed him to perceive spiritual light and mana fluctuations 17 18.
- Helped him judge the relative cultivation of opponents.
- Could not identify the nature of the unknown beast hide later used to upgrade the Soul Banner 22.
Venerable Soul Banner Control
Li wielded the Venerable Soul Banner as his primary means of survival and combat.
- Activated the Banner with Magic Power to capture the Imp Ghost that attacked him at the literary gathering 10.
- Could call upon Tu Shan Jun and the Banner’s Yin Soul Ghost Creatures, but the duration depended on Li’s available Magic Power 15 24.
- Used Night Parade of a Hundred Ghosts against Zhang Gui and the Prefectural Manor’s forces 18.
- Upgraded the Banner to a High-Grade Artifact by combining it with an indestructible unknown beast hide; this unlocked Soul Gathering Pill 22.
- The Banner’s power let him fight beyond his own cultivation, but it also exposed him to the danger of backlash and depletion 11 18.
Equipment
- Venerable Soul Banner — High-Grade Artifact/Magic Tool during Li’s tenure; housed Tu Shan Jun and numerous Yin Soul Ghost Creatures. Li upgraded it using unknown beast hide 22.
- Sword Hairpin — A hairpin that transformed into a three-foot Magic Sword when infused with Magic Power 28 29.
- Storage Talisman — Received from Tu Shan Jun after their reunion; contained cultivation resources, a flying sword, manuals, Spirit Stones, and the unknown beast hide 21.
- Yin Soul Pills — Condensed through the Soul Banner; dramatically accelerated Li’s cultivation but intensified Yin Qi erosion 23 27 28.
Relationships
- Tu Shan Jun — Master Soul of the Venerable Soul Banner; Li’s teacher, protector, and closest supernatural ally. Tu Shan Jun taught him fist techniques, guided his investigations, and repeatedly risked himself to save Li 12 16 19 25.
- Meng Zhen — Friend whose disappearance led Li to investigate the Prefectural Governor. Li learned that Meng had been used as cultivation medicine and sought vengeance 15 17.
- Liu Chuang — Friend from Li’s former scholarly circle. Years after Li’s death, Liu searched the Banner for him and vowed to rescue his soul 9 148 153.

- Zhang Wanlong — Prefectural Governor responsible for using cultivators as medicine and for the destruction of the Li family. Li eventually killed him in revenge 17 24 31.
- Zhang Gui — Zhang Wanlong’s son, a Qi Refiner whose injuries were healed through sacrificed cultivators. Li summoned the Banner’s Red-Haired Ghost to kill him 17 18.
- Li Qingfeng’s parents and household — Li’s family supported his scholarly life and cultivation, but the Prefectural Manor massacred the Li household after searching for him 8 24.
