Background

Bai Ye entered Qingyun Sect alongside Du Dashu and was placed under Tian Buyi at Dazhu Peak. As Du Dashu was older, Bai Ye became the seventh-ranked disciple beneath Song Daren, Wu Dayi, Zheng Dali, He Dazhi, Lü Daxin, and Du Dashu. Song Daren arranged his lodging and daily necessities. 1

Initially judged to have merely average aptitude, Bai Ye began with Dazhu Peak's mandatory bamboo-chopping training. A Marrow Cleansing Pill removed his bodily impurities and cleared his meridians, greatly improving his ability to absorb spiritual energy. 2 3

His extraordinary progress became apparent when he mastered the difficult Divine Sword Lightning Control True Art in a single day. Tian Buyi subsequently brought him to the Ancestral Hall, accepted him as a personal disciple, and entrusted him with protecting Qingyun Sect against the Demonic Path. 8 9

Bai Ye's status as Dazhu Peak's successor was initially kept secret, though his drinking habit soon made his title, the Drunken Sword Immortal, known throughout Qingyun Sect. He remained loyal to Dazhu Peak when Dao Xuan offered to transfer him to Tongtian Peak. 10 14

Bai Ye is outwardly carefree, wine-loving, and prone to joking that he is “just a legend.” His relaxed conduct causes many disciples to mistake him for an idle drunkard, yet he consistently cultivates, prepares for threats, and conceals the full extent of his strength when possible. 6 9 15
