Background / History
Tian Buyi is the master of Dazhu Peak. He accepted Bai Ye and Du Dashu as disciples, initially holding little expectation for their aptitude. He taught them the Taiji Xuanqing Dao and oversaw their early bamboo-chopping training, presenting a stern but attentive approach to discipleship 1 2.
Bai Ye's rapid progress overturned Tian Buyi's assumptions about genius. After witnessing Bai Ye enter the first layer of Taiji Xuanqing Dao and resonate with heaven and earth without guidance, Tian Buyi acknowledged that conventional training would not suit him. He chose to guide rather than constrain Bai Ye's unconventional, wine-based cultivation 5.
Tian Buyi later entrusted Bai Ye with the Divine Sword Lightning Control True Art, brought him to Qingyun's Ancestral Hall, and formally accepted him as Dazhu Peak's true disciple. He declared that Bai Ye would bear the future of both Dazhu Peak and Qingyun Sect, expecting him to defend the sect when necessary 7 9.
Five years later, Tian Buyi publicly confirmed Bai Ye as his personal disciple and prospective successor to Dazhu Peak despite widespread opposition from Qingyun disciples and Head Seats. He refused to back down even after clashing with Cang Song and receiving a warning from Dao Xuan 10.
Personality
Tian Buyi is outwardly stern, blunt, and easily angered by perceived indiscipline. He initially calls Bai Ye a “rebellious disciple” after finding him drunk instead of conventionally training, and he later rebukes Tian Ling'er for dismissing Bai Ye as merely a drunkard 5 56.
Behind this severity, he is patient, protective, and deeply proud of his disciples. He adapts his teaching to Bai Ye's unique path, supports Zhang Xiaofan despite his poor initial aptitude, and places great trust in Bai Ye's judgment and potential 5 48 227.
He is fiercely loyal to Qingyun Sect and Dazhu Peak. When he learns Bai Ye was targeted by Old Monster Duanmu, he immediately suspects an internal traitor and vows to investigate. He also intervenes personally when Bai Ye's anger risks escalating into a massacre of Heavenly Sound Temple disciples 28 151.
