Background
Origins and legacy
A later account identifies Flender, Yu Xiaogang, and Liu Erlong as Shrek's traditional founders. It further claims that Shrek obtained its tournament qualification by taking over Liu Erlong's Lanba Academy and renaming it Shrek Academy. 424
Over ten thousand years, Shrek became known as the continent's number-one soul master academy. Its prestige rested on its powerful graduates, its role in combating Evil Soul Masters, and its association with Tang San and the other Shrek gods; statues of the seven stood at the academy entrance. 30 159 289
During enrollment periods, prospective students crowded Shrek City's eastern gate. Admission was viewed as a path toward becoming an exceptional soul master or Soul Engineer, and applicants sought recommendation letters even at great personal cost. 30
Internal divisions
By Mu En's later years, the academy had fractured into factions. Yan Shaozhe and Cai Meier's Martial Soul Department frequently clashed with Xian Lin'er and Qian Duoduo's Soul Tool Department, with Yan Shaozhe also suppressing the latter on several occasions. 140
Mu En recognized that Shrek's long-standing honor and powerful position had left its leadership stagnant. Near the end of his life, he believed meaningful reform was no longer possible without an exceptional successor capable of restoring the academy. 181
History
Lin Yun's enrollment and Shrek's early interest
Lin Yun arrived at Shrek during its enrollment season and entered through Shrek City's eastern gate. Mu En sensed that Lin Yun's Martial Soul surpassed even his Light Holy Dragon in quality, regarding him as a potential “little monster” who might help secure Shrek's future. 30 32
Shrek later admitted Lin Yun directly into the Inner Academy without requiring an assessment. The Sea God Pavilion hoped that Inner Academy status and access to the Golden Tree would bind him to the academy, but he showed little interest in its cultivation benefits. 222 268
Reputation crises
A series of anonymously distributed publications severely damaged Shrek's public standing.
- “Dragon and Phoenix Entanglement” spread scandalous stories about the academy's deans, reaching more than seventy percent of Shrek's students and circulating within the Inner Academy. Sea God Pavilion convened over the issue and launched a full investigation. 53 54
- Evidence concerning Zhou Yi's conduct was circulated across the continent, prompting former students and families to protest outside Shrek Academy. 61
- “Three Years, Then Another Three Years—I Became Shrek's Upper Echelon!” exposed Xuan Zi as a Holy Spirit Cult infiltrator and detailed the harm he had caused to Shrek students over nearly two centuries. 239 240 241
The Xuan Zi revelations triggered mass withdrawals by students and damaged Shrek's reputation despite its tournament victory. Mu En personally left the academy to address the crisis. 243
Collapse of Mu En's administration
Mu En punished Xuan Zi, sealed his cultivation, and confined him beneath the Golden Tree. He also declined to reinforce Shrek's injured tournament team, arguing that a single championship did not determine the academy's worth. 181 182
After accusations that Mu En had aided Evil Soul Masters, Elder Song denounced him before Sea God Pavilion. Mu En died soon afterward, leaving Shrek without its longtime pillar. 289 290
The *Greedy Ambition* scandal
The book “Greedy Ambition” alleged that Shrek intended to exploit the Sun Moon Empire's future conquest of the continent, use He Caitou's imperial bloodline, and establish a “Shrek Empire.” 313
The publication caused the Four Great Empires to view Shrek with suspicion. Their forces mobilized around Shrek City, while Shrek expelled Zhang Lexuan and He Caitou and publicly denied having any imperial ambitions. 314
Zhang Lexuan subsequently left Shrek, joined Lin Yun's faction, and provided him with detailed information on Shrek's experts and internal structure. 318
Partial recovery and the second tournament
Elder Song attempted to restore Shrek's standing by severing its association with Evil Soul Masters and dispatching powerful members to hunt them. The campaign improved the academy's reputation and brought some students back, though Shrek had lost many teachers, students, and core figures. 337
Shrek struggled to form a capable team for the next All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Tournament. Its leadership compelled Beibei, Xu Sanshi, Jiang Nannan, Huo Yuhao, and Tang Wutong to represent Shrek rather than the Tang Sect. 337
The team survived difficult matches against the Mingyu Sect and Heavenly Dragon Gate, then fought the Holy Spirit Cult at great cost. Four Shrek members, including Beibei and Jiang Nannan, died; the academy withdrew from the tournament due to casualties and low morale. 345 358
Though the withdrawal harmed its competitive standing, public opinion briefly improved because Shrek had eliminated a Soul Saint-level and five Soul Emperor-level Evil Soul Masters in the battle. 359
Destruction of Shrek
Lin Yun later assembled soul beast forces and allies to attack Shrek. Xuan Zi, enraged by his own treatment, also turned against the academy and attacked its Titled Douluo defenders. 390
Under a spatial barrier created by Lin Yun, Di Tian, and the Snow Empress, ten Level 9 Fixed Soul Cannon Shells were fired at Shrek: three targeted Sea God Island, while seven targeted combatants in the sky. Sea God Lake evaporated, and the academy was reduced to a lava-filled ruin. 393
A subsequent seven-shell strike killed Xuan Zi and Song Yunzhi. Shrek Academy and Shrek City were effectively annihilated; Huo Yuhao, Tang Wutong, and the Golden Tree survived under golden protection, while Yan Shaozhe later emerged as the sole surviving Shrek Titled Douluo. 394 396
Aftermath
Yan Shaozhe abandoned immediate revenge against the Sun Moon Empire after Huo Yuhao convinced him that protecting the Golden Tree was Shrek's remaining priority. 396
The release of “Source of Life” drew the Four Great Empires, Body Sect, Holy Spirit Sect, Heavenly Dragon Gate, Mingde Hall, and other factions to Shrek's ruins. Each sought control of the Golden Tree for its own purposes. 399 400 406
Tang San later manifested through divine consciousness to defend Shrek's remaining claim and condemn the factions besieging the Golden Tree. 410
