Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| God yet to be born / quasi-Archon | 80 | Identified as a god not yet born from its shell. Its highest exertable power in the relevant history is Twilight; in the modern world, Skyflint's suppression limits it to Daylight. |
| Distributed Great Collective | 221 | Operates through a vast collective will and vessels such as the Bhrigu Immortal, enabling it to act through numerous replaceable individuals. |
| Krishna the Dark Lord | 222 | Hebe uses Golden Truth: Leviathan to force Eris's Bharata power into one individual, Krishna. The resulting form is stronger but loses the collective's adaptability and ability to conceal itself through new vessels. |
Background
Eris was conceived in an “ultimate historical void” created when the Governors denied and indefinitely postponed the Third World War. This origin bound it to be born from the Fisher King, to grow in the Holy Grail's vessel, and to be tempered by Skyflint. Because the future that would produce it was postponed rather than resolved, it became the god who is perpetually about to be born but has not yet been born. 221
Its nature is divided between two aspects of Secret History: Hebe represents history and closed loops, while Eris represents mystery and confusion. Eris's ability to obscure its own origin made it effectively unselectable to other Governors; they could recognize Greece's existence without being able to identify what Greece truly was or target Eris directly. 168 230
At some point, Cruel Wolf's self-destruction split Eris in two. Its mind and consciousness remained in the distant future after the Third World War, while its power and authority entered the Bharata Lostbelt. 222
Personality
Eris promotes an ideal of “ultimate freedom,” defined by its collective as doing what one wants and refusing what one does not want to do. It encourages the proliferation of possibilities, individual desires, and divergent historical futures. 80 149 275
Its methods are indirect and opportunistic. Rather than relying on a stable body or a conventional hierarchy, it cultivates a collective through infection, worship, and the temptation of power. It is willing to abandon individual plans when a larger conflict is more strategically valuable, as shown when it leaves Atlantis to aid Cruel Wolf in the Wasteland. 80 152
Hebe regards Eris's rhetoric as internally contradictory: although it claims to oppose fate, it imposes prophecies and predetermined outcomes upon the histories it controls. 149
Abilities & Methods
Swarm Assimilation
Eris has no conventional followers or Named Attendants. Those who chant its name may instead become part of its swarm and gain the Status of a quasi-Archon. 80
- It grants requests for talent, power, or Status; each gift expands the swarm further. 80
- Its influence can infect rituals directed toward the Fisher King and assimilate their participants into “Eris.” 99
- In Kyoto, all living beings in the city could be made into Eris through Ashiya Dōman's expanded targeting. 84
- Swarm members may suffer mutations associated with insects and worms when Eris's influence is disrupted. 266
Secret History Manipulation
Eris possesses the qualifications to compile Secret Histories and specializes in confusion rather than Hebe's closed loops. 141 230
- It erodes the origin histories of Governors, encroaching upon their laws, destiny, and Golden Truth. 168
- It can fabricate or distort historical constructions, including the Burning Witch incarnation of Joan of Arc in Atlantis. 141
- Its intended endgame is to fracture the five Great Histories into innumerable branching historical streams. 80 159
- It seeks to guide history toward infinitely subdivided futures. 275
Collective Existence
Eris can act through multiple vessels and identities rather than a singular vulnerable body. Ashiya Dōman, Nietzsche, Sibyl, and the Bhrigu Immortal all served as manifestations or vessels for its will. 80 141 151 221
- Destroying an individual vessel does not normally eliminate Eris; another member of the collective can assume the role. 222
- It can manifest past selves through Secret History, making direct attacks on one incarnation strategically insufficient. 152
- Hebe's forced concentration of Eris into Krishna removes this advantage within Bharata. 222
Historical Usurpation
Eris swallowed Greek civilization and usurped the Greek pantheon under the correspondence of Dionysus. 80 131
- It nearly hollowed out the Fisher King, whose former Greek correspondence was Zeus. 131
- It stole the Gatekeeper's God-King destiny, forcing the latter to persist under the identities of Attinan and Janus. 131 151
- It previously imparted the secret of rebirth to Nephthys in the Egyptian lands and sought to replace the Duke of Sighs during his Ascension ritual. 80
Relationships
- Hebe Stanton — Eris's destined great enemy. Their conflict is framed as a struggle between confusion and closed-loop history; Hebe repeatedly disrupts Eris's historical foundations and ultimately concentrates its Bharata power into Krishna. 80 168 222 230
- Fisher King — The April Archon from whose body Eris is destined to be born. Eris parasitized and nearly replaced him from within. 80 131 221
- Cruel Wolf — Described as Eris's sibling due to their shared origin in the ultimate historical void. Cruel Wolf's self-destruction split Eris's consciousness from its power. 221 222
- Gatekeeper — Eris stole the Gatekeeper's God-King destiny while consuming Greek civilization; Hebe later enabled the Gatekeeper to counterattack through reconstructed Greek history. 131 168 169
- Ashiya Dōman — A devotee who became a member of Eris's swarm and served as a vessel for its influence in Kyoto. 80 84
- Sibyl — Former Named Attendant of the Fisher King who was infected alongside him after Eris's influence became overwhelming. 151 191
- Nietzsche — Leader of an Eris-aligned philosophical society in Atlantis and an opponent of Hebe's attempt to ring the Bell of Ys. 144 149
- Holy Grail — The vessel in which Eris grows; it also lends Eris power through the Eris Great Congregation's ritual. 221 159
- Skyflint — Suppresses Eris in the present world and repeatedly targets its constructions, but also functions as one of the forces destined to temper it. 80 104 141 221
Story Role / Major Arcs
Eastern Lands Lostbelt
Eris is revealed as the force behind Ashiya Dōman's transformation and the hidden architect of Kyoto's escalating calamity. Speaking its name triggers an insect-like initiation that grants Hebe the knowledge of its nature, origin, and threat. 80
During Hebe's Power Struggle with Ashiya Dōman, Eris attempts to exploit exchanged identities and destinies across historical timelines. Hebe recognizes that Dōman remains an individual rather than being wholly replaced by Eris. 84
Atlantis Lostbelt
Eris has already saturated Atlantis through musicians, philosophers, the Grand Symphony, and its historical construction of the Burning Witch. Hebe identifies Eris as one of the two decisive forces determining the Lostbelt's outcome. 113 117 141
It manipulates the conflict around the Bell of Ys so that even a seeming victory for Hebe can serve its wider strategy. When Atlantis sinks and its future ends, Eris leaves for the Wasteland to support Cruel Wolf rather than remain for the Lostbelt's conclusion. 148 152
Greek Counterattack
After the Atlantis arc, Hebe reconstructs Greek history through archaeological evidence in Crete and Mycenae. By separating Greek history into five periods and making Atlantis a firewall between Greece and Rome, she exposes Eris to the Governors and forces it out of Greek civilization. 168 169
Eris responds by attempting to enter the Silent Bookstore through the Mediterranean-wide “knocking” phenomenon, but the Gatekeeper prevents it from advancing further. 168 169
Bharata Lostbelt
Eris acts through the Bhrigu Immortal and other hidden vessels while Hebe investigates its true origin. Hebe traps the Great Collective's will within the Bhrigu Immortal, destroys most of its spores, and forces it into direct negotiation. 221
Hebe then reveals the split between Eris's future consciousness and its Bharata power. Using Golden Truth: Leviathan, she consolidates the latter into Krishna the Dark Lord, eliminating its ability to endlessly replace fallen avatars within the Lostbelt. 222
