Background / History

Orochimaru was already one of Konoha's foremost combatants when he first appeared during the Hyuga–Uchiha confrontation. Alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, he had fought Hanzō of the Salamander in the Second Shinobi World War and received the title of one of the Sannin; his battlefield record earned particular respect from the Uchiha Clan. 11

After witnessing Kyosuke Uchiha's potential, Orochimaru instructed him to visit the next day and accepted him as a disciple. He gave Kyosuke unrestricted access to a concealed underground laboratory, research materials, an archive of personal ninjutsu, and the Ryūchi Cave summoning contract. 17 18

He later entrusted Kyosuke with cultivating cells and observing experimental results for the secret Hashirama Cell Transplantation Project, undertaken in cooperation with Danzō and Root. 30 31 As Orochimaru's research grew more extreme, he began relying on human experimentation to improve the project's results. 253

During the conflict with Sunagakure, Orochimaru served as commander of Konoha's Southwest Army. He personally rescued Kyosuke and Lin from Pakura, coordinated with Fugaku Uchiha and Hiruzen Sarutobi, and led the pursuit after Binjing's death threw the Sand forces into disorder. 42 43 128 148 170

Following Konoha's victory, Orochimaru pursued the Hokage position. Hiruzen instead promoted Minato Namikaze as his preferred successor, and Orochimaru's failure to secure the office intensified his human experimentation. 227 253

His experiments were eventually exposed after disappearances among Konoha's population, including village ninja. By the time of the Akatsuki's later activities, Orochimaru had been invited into the organization. He subsequently cooperated with Kyosuke against Dark Owl rather than remaining loyal to her plans. 360

Personality

Orochimaru is eccentric and unconcerned with formalities, but he places exceptional value on talent, usefulness, and research aptitude. He gave Kyosuke unusual freedom because the boy showed no fear of his laboratory, possessed strong theoretical knowledge, and demonstrated value as a researcher. 17 18 19

Despite this calculating disposition, he shows genuine investment in his disciple. He immediately answered Kyosuke's distress signal against Pakura, later helped him gain access to the Southwest Army, and remained willing to discuss Kyosuke's research and survival. 42 43 93

As a commander, Orochimaru is calm, decisive, and willing to make ruthless strategic choices. His fixation on knowledge and power becomes increasingly destructive after the Hokage succession, culminating in experiments on living people and his eventual defection. 166 227 253 261
