Background / History

Tongtian was one of the Three Pure Ones and regarded Taiqing and Yuanshi as his elder brothers. After Hongjun's first lecture, he sensed a supreme treasure hidden behind an innate grand formation in the Kunlun Mountains and led his brothers to investigate it, demonstrating both his directness and talent for formations. 9

His relationship with Yuanshi deteriorated as Tongtian opposed Yuanshi's conduct and the two sides' disciples increasingly clashed over their origins. Tongtian eventually established a separate dojo on Kunlun Mountain rather than remain beside Yuanshi. 38

Qin Xuan's generosity significantly changed Tongtian's view of him. After Qin Xuan compensated Tongtian and Taiqing with gourds for Yuanshi's actions, Tongtian came to regard Qin Xuan favorably. 14 Later, Tongtian visited Pangu Temple seeking guidance, was astonished by its resources, and accepted Chaos Spirit Liquid from Qin Xuan to cultivate the Sword Dao and pursue the Primordial Golden Immortal path. 42

Although Tongtian initially possessed Primordial Violet Qi, he rejected the path of becoming a Saint through merit, believing that his sword could open his own supreme Dao. Qin Xuan's guidance later convinced him that, as a descendant of Pangu, he should swear to Pangu and the Great Dao rather than appease the Heavenly Dao. 138 161

When Yuanshi threatened Duobao to force Tongtian's compliance, Tongtian openly defied him and swore to destroy the Chan Sect lineage if his disciple were harmed. 157 He then publicly severed his master-disciple relationship with Hongjun, received Pangu's acknowledgement and Great Dao merit, attained Sainthood, and founded the Jie Sect. 161 162

Tongtian is depicted as a stern Daoist whose bearing becomes especially sharp when he draws upon his Sword Dao. He has sword-like eyebrows, a cold gaze, and is seen wearing a blue Daoist robe while wielding the Qingping Sword. 79 449

Personality

Tongtian is fundamentally straightforward and decisive. Taiqing and Yuanshi recognize that he does not act without purpose, even when his actions initially seem abrupt. 9 He is also fiercely protective of his disciples; Yuanshi's seizure of Duobao drove him to openly threaten the Chan Sect despite the disparity in their positions. 157

He initially retains strong attachment to his brothers, especially Yuanshi, and is reluctant to believe that Yuanshi would deliberately suppress the Jie Sect. 697 However, Qin Xuan's repeated guidance develops Tongtian into a more calculating leader capable of anticipating Hongjun's schemes, reforming his recruitment practices, and using Heavenly Court politics to unite the Saints' interests against Hongjun. 186 334 452

Tongtian can also be mischievous and overbearing. He repeatedly intimidates and beats Haotian, and he subjects Duobao to dangerous “performances” and harsh training while also healing or strengthening him afterward. 432 598
