Background / History
Yuanshi Tianzun is one of the Three Pure Ones alongside Taiqing and Tongtian, born from Pangu’s Primordial Spirit. As one of Hongjun’s disciples, he initially regarded himself as an orthodox successor of Pangu and the Mystic Gate. Qin Xuan forced him to recognize the Twelve Ancestral Witches as Pangu’s true successors, costing Yuanshi a substantial share of Pangu-related fortune and beginning his lasting enmity with Qin Xuan. 13 289
His humiliation at Buzhou Mountain worsened the existing fracture between the Three Pure Ones. Tongtian’s attempt to offer the Qingping Sword in place of Yuanshi’s Three Treasures Jade Ruyi was interpreted by Yuanshi as public ridicule, leading him to confront Tongtian at Jade Void Palace. Luo Hou later tempted Yuanshi toward the Demonic Path, and the resentment born from these events became an inner demon. 13 16
Yuanshi founded the Chan Sect on Kunlun Mountain, declaring that it would elucidate and follow the Heavenly Dao. His initial sect-founding merit failed to make him a Saint, so he resorted to grand vows and accumulated heavy karmic obligations before finally attaining Sagehood. 146 148 149 150
Appearance
Yuanshi usually presents himself as a lofty, majestic Daoist whose bearing is deliberately dignified and saintly. When descending openly, he is surrounded by Jade Pure Immortal Light and overwhelming Sage pressure. 425 649
- Majestic face and extraordinary bearing; clear light flows through his eyes. 425
- Golden lotuses appear near his ears, with auspicious light and purple qi accompanying his arrival. 425
- Has appeared seated upon a sandalwood chariot drawn by nine Five-Clawed Golden Dragons. 649
- Wears a Purple-Gold Jade Crown and Nine-Dragon Golden Robe during formal appearances. 651
- His composure visibly collapses around Qin Xuan’s Heaven-Opening Divine Axe, which reminds him of past beheadings and mutilations. 194 438
Personality
Yuanshi is intensely proud of his Saintly status, his sect, and what he considers “orthodox” origins. He frequently judges cultivators by lineage, dismissing those of humble, beast, aquatic, or egg-born origins while elevating disciples he considers naturally noble. 306 359 425
His pride is paired with a volatile temper. Public humiliation, especially at Qin Xuan’s hands or before Tongtian, regularly drives him into rage, recklessness, and obsession with restoring face. He has attempted to crush Duobao, suppress Candle Dragon, eliminate Chiyou, and destroy Buzhou Mountain when his authority was challenged. 158 313 425 438
Despite this arrogance, Yuanshi is deeply protective of favored disciples. He intervenes personally when Guang Chengzi and the Golden Immortals are threatened, shields Guang Chengzi from Kong Xuan, and offered ten Innate Spiritual Treasures in an attempt to save Southern Pole Immortal. His care is selective: Huang Long receives open disdain and is treated as disposable because of his Dragon Race origin. 425 429 587 382 415
Yuanshi is also highly dependent on Hongjun. He obeys his teacher’s commands even when suspicious of them, but privately resents being used for dangerous tasks. His fear of Hongjun’s punishment—and of Qin Xuan’s retaliation—often overrides his outward confidence. 316 503 557 590
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Dao Sagehood
As a Heavenly Dao Saint, Yuanshi can suppress ordinary cultivators through sheer pressure and issue battlefield-wide commands.
- His arrival halted the forces of the Three Primordial Races, Immortal Court, and Demon Court; most cultivators could not move under his pressure. 246
- His Saintly aura can force beings within tens of thousands of miles to kneel. 438
- He can traverse vast distances with a thought and manifest directly at locations such as Skull Mountain or the South Heaven Gate. 415 461 649
- His immortality is unreliable in practice: he has repeatedly been slain, beheaded, crushed, or reduced to a detached head before reviving. 160 248 426 462
Yuqing Divine Lightning
Yuanshi wields Yuqing Divine Lightning as a major offensive divine art.
- He released dozens of bolts at once against Tongtian, weaving them into a lightning net. 450
- He created a sea of Yuqing Divine Lightning to resist a colossal palm at the Heavenly Court, but the attack failed to slow it. 461
- His lightning and other Saintly attacks can be nullified or overwhelmed by stronger opponents, including Tongtian and Qin Xuan-aligned powers. 450 461
Divination and Heavenly-Secret Manipulation
Yuanshi frequently calculates heavenly secrets to locate opportunities, destined figures, and threats.
- He identified Xuanyuan’s impending birth and dispatched his disciples to teach the future Human Emperor. 414
- He deduced the “flying bear” omen connected to the Investiture of the Gods and later learned that Jiang Ziya—not Shen Gongbao—was its destined figure. 496 575
- His calculations failed when the Human Dao fortune extended Great Shang’s destiny from twenty-eight years to twenty-eight thousand years. 556
- He can conceal his aura, transform into smoke, and infiltrate formations; he entered Buzhou Mountain through a hole no larger than a grain of rice. 312
Sect Leadership and Recruitment
Yuanshi leads the Chan Sect through strict hierarchy, selective recruitment, and calculated deployment of disciples.
- He opened Kunlun Mountain to disciples with deep fortune and strong roots after becoming a Saint. 150
- He tasked the Twelve Golden Immortals with recruiting third-generation disciples and sending Jie Sect members onto the Investiture of the Gods list. 496
- He treats Guang Chengzi as his most trusted disciple and permits Guang Chengzi’s judgment to take precedence when the Golden Immortals act together. 414
- He pursued Human Emperor teaching positions primarily for merit, fortune, and proof of the Chan Sect’s superiority. 359 414 430
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Three Treasures Jade Ruyi — Yuanshi surrendered it to Qin Xuan as compensation for disturbing Pangu’s rest. 13
- Pangu Banner — An Innate Supreme Treasure bestowed by Hongjun; transformed from the blade of the Heaven-Opening Axe and capable of re-evolving earth, water, fire, and wind. 47
- God-Slaying Sword — Received from Hongjun and later wielded against Duobao with late-stage Quasi-Sage power. 51 78
- Twelfth Grade Golden Lotus of Merit — Used to suppress the Chan Sect’s fortune at its founding; Yuanshi later replaced it with another treasure. 146 195
- Immortal-Slaying God-Punishing Saber — A treasure used to sever his obsessions; it was destroyed during Candle Dragon’s conflict with the Chan Sect Golden Immortals. 425
- Saint Slaying Pill — A pill given by Hongjun that increased Yuanshi’s cultivation while serving as a means of coercion against him. 590
Relationships
- Qin Xuan — Principal enemy. Qin Xuan repeatedly humiliates, mutilates, kills, and extorts Yuanshi, while Yuanshi fears both Qin Xuan and the Heaven-Opening Divine Axe. 13 160 248 426 438
- Dao Ancestor Hongjun — Teacher. Hongjun grants Yuanshi treasures and Sagehood guidance, but also manipulates him into dangerous schemes, reprimands him harshly, and coerces him through the Saint Slaying Pill. 47 316 590
- Taiqing / Grand Supreme Laozi — Elder brother among the Three Pure Ones. Their relationship is strained by Yuanshi’s failures, policies of judging cultivators by origin, and repeated attempts to recruit Taiqing into anti-Tongtian alliances. 50 334 448 497
- Tongtian — Younger brother and major rival. Their rift began over the Qingping Sword incident and escalated into sectarian hostility, attempted murder of Duobao, and Yuanshi’s effort to drive the Jie Sect from the Heavenly Court. 16 158 448 450
- Guang Chengzi — Favored first disciple. Yuanshi consistently protects, praises, and empowers him, including placing the other Golden Immortals under Guang Chengzi’s authority. 382 414 429
- True Person Huang Long — Disciple of the Dragon Race whom Yuanshi disdains because of his origin; Huang Long recognizes that he holds little value in his master’s eyes. 382 415 425
- Jieyin and Zhunti — Temporary Western allies. Yuanshi approached them after Taiqing refused to oppose Tongtian, but their negotiations stalled over the division of Heavenly Court authority. 448
- Pingxin Niangniang — Powerful adversary. Pingxin repeatedly kills Yuanshi while protecting the Six-Eared Macaque and dismisses his offer of ten Innate Spiritual Treasures for Southern Pole Immortal. 462 587
- Di Xin — Human Emperor who openly defies Yuanshi’s authority. Di Xin’s Golden Dragon of Luck breaks Yuanshi’s defenses after a mysterious voice shatters his Dao heart. 649 651
Story Role / Major Arcs
Humiliation at Buzhou Mountain
Qin Xuan used Dijiang’s Spatial Shift to make Tongtian’s Shangqing Divine Lightning strike Yuanshi instead. Yuanshi lost Pangu-related fortune after recognizing the Ancestral Witches as Pangu’s true successors and was forced to surrender the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi. 13
Founding the Chan Sect and Becoming a Saint
Yuanshi established the Chan Sect on Kunlun Mountain but received an underwhelming response from the Heavenly Dao. He then made grand vows, incurred a 130% merit repayment obligation, and eventually became a Heavenly Dao Saint. 146 148 149 150
Conflict with Tongtian
Yuanshi attempted to kill Duobao after Duobao confronted his disciples, pushing Tongtian toward greater hatred and a determination to become a Saint. Later, Yuanshi sought alliances with Taiqing, Jieyin, and Zhunti to expel the Jie Sect from the Heavenly Court. 158 448 449
Repeated Defeats and Deaths
Qin Xuan killed Yuanshi twice in quick succession, shattering his Dao heart before Hongjun rescued him. Qin Xuan later crushed him during the conflict involving the Demon Clan, and Yuanshi was subsequently beheaded by a single axe strike while confronting Candle Dragon. 160 248 426
Plot to Destroy Buzhou Mountain
Encouraged by Hongjun, Yuanshi infiltrated Buzhou Mountain intending to destroy it and become the Primordial Chaos Overlord. Before acting, he secretly recorded Gonggong’s spinning “cultivation method,” then attempted to ram the mountain with his head. Qin Xuan and the Ancestral Witches trapped him with the Pangu True Body; Pangu subsequently severed Yuanshi’s lineage connection. 306 312 313 315 328
Struggle for Human Emperor Merit
Yuanshi sent the Twelve Golden Immortals to teach Xuanyuan after no other power moved to guide the aging Human Emperor. His sect’s attempts to claim Xuanyuan’s merit collapsed when Xuanyuan denied being Guang Chengzi’s disciple and Chiyou challenged Yuanshi’s righteous image. 414 435 438
Investiture of the Gods Schemes
Yuanshi prepared the Chan Sect for the Investiture of the Gods by recruiting third-generation disciples and attempting to place Jie Sect disciples on the list. He allied with Taiqing against Tongtian, covertly influenced Di Xin at Nuwa Palace, and later accepted Hongjun’s Saint Slaying Pill to continue the campaign against Great Shang. 496 497 506 590
Confrontation with Di Xin
Yuanshi descended to save Randeng and ordered Di Xin to submit. Di Xin instead summoned the Human Race’s Golden Dragon of Luck; a voice from the void shattered Yuanshi’s Dao heart, allowing the dragon to blast him away. Yuanshi returned only to beg forgiveness and promise not to interfere again. 649 651
