Background / History
Yu Xiaogang intervened when Tang San and Old Jack were confronted by Nuoding City Junior Soul Master Academy's gatekeepers. He quickly attempted to recruit Tang San, ultimately making him a Registered Disciple by offering to secure his first two Soul Rings. 6 7
He accompanied Tang San into Soul Hunting Forest for the latter's first ring. Yu recommended the Mandala Snake's ring despite the risks involved, then collapsed after being poisoned by the creature. Tang San's confidence in him deteriorated after this incident and after learning more about the flaws in his theories. 8 10
At Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang resumed teaching Tang San, but Tang kept him at a deliberate distance. His core physical-training method relied on weighted running, which Tang viewed as monotonous and detrimental to his hidden-weapon balance. 65 132
Yu Xiaogang later entered Heaven Dou Royal Academy through Qin Ming and his nephew Yu Tianheng. By emphasizing Dai Mubai's Level 42 breakthrough and feigning reluctance, he positioned himself to become the Imperial Dou Team's leader, replacing Qin Ming. 127 129
As team leader, he sought a sparring exchange with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, intending to use the Imperial Dou Team's performance to raise his own standing. Bone Douluo identified this goal immediately, while Tang San privately believed Yu intended to use the students to test theories and polish his reputation. 136
His failure in Yin Yang Inverted Mountain became a major blow. Unable to overcome his fear of losing cultivation, he failed the mountain's first trial, fell from Level 29 to Level 28, and became increasingly envious as his students returned with levels, soul bones, and other rewards. 203 204 214 215
During the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Xia Tianling publicly challenged Yu Xiaogang's claimed “Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul.” His theories were presented as either common knowledge, plagiarized Spirit Hall research, or unsupported conclusions; Yu was unable to defend them before the assembled Soul Master world. 310 311 312 314
After the exposure, Yu suffered severe injuries and permanent mutilation, including the loss of his left arm, right hand, tongue, and most of his teeth. Dai Mubai's faction rescued him and kept him alive; Dai's continued faith in Yu's teachings restored Yu's ambition and desire for revenge. 316 320
Following Dai Mubai's accession in the Star Luo Empire, Yu Xiaogang was restored and appointed Grand Marshal of the hundred-thousand-strong Imperial Guard. He became dependent on Blood Crystals, cultivated as an Evil Soul Master, and approached the Titled Douluo realm. 512
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a short-haired, middle-aged man with a stiff, habitual expression frequently compared to a “zombie face.” Later in Star Luo, his rigid horse-like features are described alongside an increasingly twisted and self-satisfied demeanor. 136 512
- Usually maintains an impassive, rigid expression even during confrontation. 127 136
- Previously suffered extreme disfigurement and disability before Dai Mubai's faction treated him. 320
- His Martial Soul initially manifests as the round, timid Luo Sanpao. 203
- Luo Sanpao later develops into a winged evil purple dragon with scales, claws, fangs, blood-red eyes, and black energy around its limbs. 442
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is driven by validation. He repeatedly seeks positions, disciples, and public victories that can prove he is not “trash,” often presenting his ambitions as concern for his students or reluctance to accept authority. 127 136
He can remain outwardly composed under direct hostility, such as Bone Douluo's confrontation, but struggles profoundly with failure. His inability to pass Yin Yang Inverted Mountain, combined with envy over others' rewards, causes repeated physical and emotional breakdowns. 136 203 215
His relationship with students is transactional in practice. He recruited Tang San after recognizing the value of his talent, relied on Dai Mubai's accomplishments as evidence of his own greatness, and attempted to obtain the Twin Martial Soul cultivation method partly to retain Tang Hao's support. 7 283 305
After embracing Blood Crystal cultivation, his existing cowardice, arrogance, and resentment shift into overt cruelty. As an Evil Soul Master, he tortures soldiers who conceal Spirit Army supplies and takes pleasure in their suffering. 512 517
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao

- Luo Sanpao becomes frightened by Xia Tianling's True Dragon aura and collapses trembling. 153
- Following Yu Xiaogang's later changes, Luo Sanpao evolves into an evil purple dragon with claws, fangs, scales, wings, and blood-red eyes. 442
Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang is publicly known as a Martial Soul theorist and built his reputation around the “Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul.” 310
- Correct claims were publicly identified as either longstanding common knowledge or research originating from Spirit Hall and other predecessors. 311 314
- His claims concerning Twin Martial Souls, heterogeneous spirit fusion, Martial Soul Fusion Skills, spirit-ring limits, and Ten-Thousand-Year rings were challenged and discredited during Xia Tianling's public examination. 310 311 312 315
- He records other Soul Masters' techniques, including Spirit Hall combat applications and Self-Created Soul Skills, for later study. 147

- His Star Luo military training provokes widespread resentment among the soldiers under his command. 512
