Organization

History

Early conflict with Umbrella

S.H.I.E.L.D. places Sharon Carter, known as Agent 13, inside Umbrella Corporation as Wang Khan's assistant. Although Wang Khan suspects her affiliation, he keeps her close for surveillance rather than exposing her. 8

The organization attempts to reverse-engineer Umbrella's Mechanical Spiders and Spider-Sense System. Fitz and Simmons determine that the robots' hardware can be replicated, but the software's anti-theft locks and DNA verification system prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. from reproducing the full system. 9

After Wang Khan abducts Skye, S.H.I.E.L.D. retrieves her following the awakening of her Quake ability in Brooklyn. Nick Fury approves her recruitment, places her under Coulson's training, and intends to make her a future Avengers candidate. 14 15

Wang Khan subsequently attacks S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, crippling its vehicle support, breaching its server, and stealing an estimated thirty percent of its classified files. The stolen material includes Quinjet vertical-takeoff and stealth technology. 16

Superhuman research and escalation

S.H.I.E.L.D. studies Skye under the codename Shockwave while seeking to understand and reproduce her Inhuman abilities. Her background is protected by Level 10 clearance, available only to Nick Fury and Alexander Pierce. 15

Following repeated attacks by Wang Khan, Fury accelerates the Avengers Initiative and deploys Skye as a Level 5 field operative. 16 30 The organization also expands its research into 084s and Inhuman modification, eventually creating more than one hundred Native Inhumans with severely limited intelligence and no special abilities. 46 81

The failure of the Native Inhuman program, Hydra's occupation of a Chicago air-force base, and the subsequent liberation of Chicago bring investigations, sealed research files, technology losses, and major political consequences for S.H.I.E.L.D. 86 108

Political restrictions and Tesseract research

After Umbrella exposes S.H.I.E.L.D.'s espionage, Tesseract research, and alleged vulnerability to alien infiltration, the Pentagon orders the organization to disband its private army within the United States or move it abroad. Its remaining domestic agents are restricted from using heavy weapons. 113 114 115 116

Fury nevertheless continues Project Pegasus. S.H.I.E.L.D. collects iridium, studies the Tesseract with Dr. Selvig, and develops technology intended to create stable space wormholes. 116 117

The organization secretly develops Tesseract-energy weapons, including energy-gun prototypes and more powerful missile concepts. Tony Stark and Captain America discover these projects during the Loki crisis, damaging their trust in Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. 119

Hydra takeover and collapse

Alexander Pierce assumes the directorship after Maria Hill resigns, gaining control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and transforming it into a Hydra-controlled agency. 131

Natasha Romanoff later reveals that veteran agents John Garrett and Grant Ward are Hydra operatives and demands the release of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s personnel files to expose the infiltration. 197 Fury's subsequent investigation uncovers Project Insight and Pierce's control over the Helicarrier construction program. 198 201

Captain America, Natasha, and Hill infiltrate the Triskelion to replace the Helicarriers' targeting chips. Their broadcast triggers open civil war between loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Hydra forces across bases, combat units, and aircraft carriers. 202

Hydra ultimately takes control of all three Helicarriers and reveals its intention to use them as space-based weapons capable of striking world capitals. 205 210 The organization suffers a major collapse; many agents leave or are absorbed by the FBI and CIA. 219

Conflict with Afterlife

After the collapse, S.H.I.E.L.D. pursues the Terrigen Crystals at Afterlife. Fury orders Coulson's team to locate the settlement and uses a staged Hydra attack to gain Daisy's trust and record Gordon's spatial-fluctuation DNA. 220 225

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attempt to capture the Afterlife Inhumans permanently breaks Daisy's loyalty. During the confrontation, Daisy kills Coulson, while Gorgon kills numerous S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. 228

Skrull crisis and reorganization

During the Skrull invasion, Wanda discovers that Nick Fury has been replaced by a Skrull and that the impostor helped orchestrate the invasion. 332

Wang Khan later impersonates Fury, kills the real Fury, exposes S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secret bases and funds, and positions Sharon Carter as the new Director. 341 By the time of the Nordic Five crisis, S.H.I.E.L.D. functions as a global intelligence organization that gathers and assesses threats for higher government bodies rather than operating as an independent armed force. 380
