Background / History

Shiyali was an exceptionally gifted Atlas Institute alchemist. By the age of six, she had attained instructor status and special-envoy authority while standing as a candidate for the Institute's next Director. Her inherited Aether Lines allowed her to extract information from others' memories and thought processes, but also isolated her from those around her, who feared being examined or robbed of their knowledge. 10

While investigating the submerged Alexandria Library, Shiyali was initially controlled by Novia's Aether Lines and made to guide him through its defenses. After he released her, she tested his magecraft, reassessed the inaccurate intelligence she had gathered about him, and entered a contract to assist him in breaking through the library. 10 11

In the final chamber, Shiyali supported Novia against Divine Body Osiris. She used calculations and Aether Lines to restrain Osiris, recognized that its soul was newly formed rather than that of a true returning god, and continued assisting Novia despite initially proposing a retreat and seal at the cost of one of her hands. 11 12

After the battle left Novia unconscious for five days, Shiyali disguised herself as him while moving through Alexandria. Interacting directly with the people he had influenced gave her a new understanding of ordinary human warmth. She also refused to use her Aether Lines on the unconscious Novia and delayed reporting to the Institute until he awoke, citing their alliance and his safety. 12

Novia later summoned her to Britain to process the remains of the Dragon of Albion. Though refining the entire corpse would require an estimated twenty years, Shiyali agreed to remake its head into a spear within one year. She spent nearly all of that year maintaining the underground workshop and completed the blue-black armament according to Novia's design. 15 16 19

Shiyali eventually recognized her attachment to Novia but struggled to express it. After missing him in Rome, she recorded a message into a specially made stone and entrusted it to Lucius Longinus; Novia received the gift but did not know how to activate its recording. 33 34

When Novia was dying after preventing the apocalypse, Shiyali brought a Director-issued contract that could preserve his spirit and soul. He instead asked her to return Melusine's remains to the Inner Sea of Stars, a task later attributed to Shiyali in the modern era. 38 45

Personality

Shiyali initially approaches people through calculation, information, and detached observation. Her ethics were largely constructed from information extracted through Aether Lines: she broadly avoided evil and performed good, but had difficulty understanding the human feelings behind either. The Atlas Director considered her future dangerous because this borrowed “common sense” could collapse under extreme circumstances. 12

She is highly competitive, proud of her abilities, and eager to demonstrate that her standing within the Atlas Institute is deserved. This drives her to reach Britain in three days, refuse rest, and devote a full year to refining Albion's head into Novia's requested weapon. 15 19

Despite her cold presentation, Shiyali is conscientious and loyal once she accepts an agreement. She treats a contract as an obligation to prioritize an ally's safety, refuses to exploit Novia while he is unconscious, and later attempts to save his soul at the cost of invoking a rare personal exception. 12 38
