Background / History

Albion was a pureblooded dragon whose immense corpse lay beneath Londinium. Her body measured roughly two kilometers long and had burrowed underground before her death; her head detached and extended deeper beneath the earth. 15 16

Before the disappearance of fantasy, Albion regarded herself as the strongest dragon and waited for her weaker kin to leave first. Fantasy ended four years earlier than she expected, leaving her behind. As mystery faded, the other creatures remaining around her died out; refusing to die alone, she attempted to physically burrow toward the Inner World. Her body was lost in the process, while her soul reached a timeless, lonely refuge-world. 20

Novia arranged for Lucius Longinus to search beneath Londinium for Albion's remains. Shiyali determined that refining the entire body would take approximately twenty years, but refining only the head into a weapon would take one year. 9 16 After a year of work, Shiyali transformed Albion's head into a blue-black spear. The weapon unexpectedly manifested Albion's consciousness, enraging her over the alteration of her body. 19 20

Novia appeased Albion through repeated expressions of reverence and invited her to wander, think, and struggle alongside him rather than remain buried underground. Albion ultimately accepted him as her wielder on her own terms, and the two formed a contract. 20 21

During the Judean campaign, Albion released her power through Novia and helped destroy Jerusalem and Doro Bar Kochba's world in a single attack. The exertion damaged her soul and left her unable to communicate for 147 days and 20 hours. 25 26 She later used the spear as a link to manifest a human avatar, but the immense magical cost left her starving; driven by instinct, she bit Novia and consumed his blood and flesh. 26

Novia later gave Albion the name Melusine and formed another contract intended to suppress her urge to eat him. 32 In a later era, she answered Novia's summons within Alcatraz's Seventh Labyrinth, arriving in her dragon form and killing Wolfgang Faust with a single strike. 45

Albion is immensely proud, self-identifying as the planet's strongest dragon and treating deference from weaker beings as natural. She initially frames her cooperation with Novia as entirely her own decision and insists that he remains merely a weak human. 20 21

Her pride conceals profound loneliness. Being left behind after fantasy disappeared and losing the creatures around her made her an “abandoned existence,” and Novia's willingness to accompany her gradually reaches her emotionally. 20 21

Albion is possessive and easily jealous of Nero's closeness with Novia. She reacts to Nero speaking of Novia, dislikes being addressed casually, and often bites Novia when upset; over time, these bites become light nips rather than the blood-drawing attacks of her first manifestation. 26 27 29

Despite her hunger and violent instincts, Albion wishes to suppress her desire to consume Novia rather than harm him. After Novia provokes her by claiming to hate her, she becomes distressed at the prospect of his rejection and promises not to be so willful. 26 30 32
