Government and Society
Northern Yan’s imperial court dominates its sects and aristocratic families. Even long-established organizations must withdraw from public affairs, seal their mountains, or operate cautiously beneath imperial authority. Coalitions of civilian powers can make local officials wary, but cannot overturn the court’s supremacy 229.
This centralization distinguishes Northern Yan from Southern Qi. Although Southern Qi has nearly half again as much territory and stronger civilian martial forces, its divided leadership has repeatedly disadvantaged it against Northern Yan 229 422.
Imperial Leadership

| Xiahou Qi | The Dragon Demon, responsible for consolidating sect forces and suppressing Dark Star 383 420. |
| Zhao Lingxiu | Restores Northern Yan after its fall and brings Southern Qi under its rule. Her later ambitions center on serving the Great Nightmare 812. |
Domestic Organizations
- Sky Rainbow Pavilion — King Yan’s powerful enforcement institution. Controls the newly established Shock Beast Army and conducts demon-blood experiments, eventually using Grandmasters as subjects 247 420.
- Dark Star — A longstanding opponent of the imperial court. Cooperates with Southern Qi, transports Crimson Crystal Stone, and relocates personnel as imperial suppression intensifies 308 383 390.
- Myriad Sect Alliance — Formed from survivors of purged forces. Its combined strength initially amounts to only four or five Grandmasters 422.
- Situ Family, Tianxiang Sword Sect, and Yuanyang Beast Sect — The three great powers of Linjiang Prefecture. The latter two are subsequently reported massacred, with the Myriad Sect Alliance suspected of involvement 117 422.
Military and Strategic Resources
Imperial Martial Strength
- Inherited foundations: Every prefecture possesses formidable treasures comparable to the Blood Demon Teeth. Roughly half of these foundations were left by Northern Yan’s First Ancestor 99.
- Divine Form experts: Intelligence cited by Jin Yang places the court’s strength at nearly one hundred Divine Form martial artists thirty years earlier, excluding concealed experts 318.
- Martial emphasis: Northern Yan prioritizes martial inheritance and battle formations. Weapon forging, pill refinement, and devices such as Divine Fire Bombs largely support martial cultivation 443.
- Dragon Blood Pool: Access is an imperial reward; Zhang Songbai receives permission to enter after discovering a Divine Seed 201.
Beast-Transformed Warriors
Northern Yan’s beast-transformation program breaks the longstanding military balance with Southern Qi and supports an invasion intended to annex its rival 248 311.
- Recruitment: Shock Beast Army notices appear throughout Wanhua City, advertising benefits more than ten times those Lin Sheng received as a Body Tempering hunter 247.
- Combat strength: Beast-Transformed Warriors reach the Divine Form stage and possess exceptional vitality and regeneration 308 384.
- Instability: Severe side effects accompany transformation. Warriors display bloodthirsty behavior even toward nearby Northern Yan soldiers 308 338.
- Demon Blood Puppets: Later deployments include puppets comparable to Grandmasters 482.
- Resource demands: Sky Rainbow Pavilion consumes most of Northern Yan’s collected Divine Seeds. Demon-blood depletion eventually prevents the court from producing more transformed warriors 326 502.
- Countermeasures: Southern Qi employs Crimson Flame Arrows and heavy cannons. The Fire God Cannon can rival a mid-stage Divine Form martial artist’s full-force strike 308 315 349.
Capital Defenses
- Imperial City Grand Array — Reinforced with Void Beast materials and capable of repairing damage. It withstands Lin Sheng’s repeated transformed attacks 478.
- Demon Blood Puppets — Prepared alongside the array as part of Wu Hui’s plan to trap Lin Sheng 478.
- Fang Wen’s arrays — Northern Yan’s foremost array master creates the Thousand Mountains, Ten Thousand Layers Great Array for an operation against Lin Sheng 468.
History
Founding Legacy
Northern Yan and Southern Qi emerged after an earlier empire split apart. Northern Yan’s First Ancestor left many of the powerful foundations that later enabled its court to suppress sects and great families 99 448.
Renewed War with Southern Qi
On the fifth day of the eighth month in Emperor Jing’s fifty-seventh year, Zhao Hongzhang fought Southern Qi’s Great General Tang Chong at the border. Their three-day battle ended with both severely wounded, breaking nearly a century of peace and prompting both nations to mass troops 208.
Northern Yan initially gained only a slight advantage, but its new military methods soon drove Southern Qi back. Its army occupied half a commandery before taking almost the entire Northern Barrens. The Heaven Breaking Sect was destroyed, while the Prajna Sect surrendered 247 248 306.
Southern Qi’s major factions allied with its central court to resist the invasion. Dark Star also cooperated with Southern Qi, supplying Crimson Crystal Stone needed for anti-beastified weaponry 306 308. In occupied territory, the withdrawal of established factions and Northern Yan’s focus on the front left broad areas vulnerable to banditry and violence 335.
Internal Purges
The court simultaneously moved to consolidate domestic forces and acquire resources for its beast-transformation program. Small and medium factions fled, concealed themselves in the mountains, or attacked county towns before abandoning their bases 311 317 334.
Xiahou Qi led Grandmasters against Dark Star, destroying strongholds and killing senior emissaries. Dark Star retaliated by assassinating high-ranking officials, further escalating the crackdown 383.
By Lin Sheng’s return, nearly half of Northern Yan’s sects and aristocratic families had effectively disappeared. Most survivors had submitted openly or secretly, while remaining resistance operated underground 411.
Conflict with Lin Sheng
Northern Yan repeatedly attempted to kill or recruit Lin Sheng. Prince Ping offered him royal patronage and access to Void Beast remains, but their confrontation ended with Zhao Yantai gravely wounded and multiple imperial Grandmasters dead 436 448.
After Northern Yan’s attacks extended to Princess Lingyu, Lin Sheng retaliated against its remaining experts. By the time he reached the Imperial Capital, Emperor Jingyuan acknowledged that one man had killed a third of Northern Yan’s Grandmasters and forced the survivors to shelter inside the capital 469 478.
Unable to break the capital’s protective array, Lin Sheng declared that he would wait outside until its defenders had to emerge 478.
Withdrawal and Collapse
Grandmaster losses, falling morale, and Southern Qi’s cooperation with the Silo Kingdom undermined the invasion. Zhao Hongzhang ultimately killed the Beast-Transformed Warriors in his own camp and ordered the army to withdraw. Southern Qi subsequently recovered the Northern Barrens 480 486 498.
Zhao Hongzhang absorbed the Thousand Eyes heart and demanded the remaining demon blood from Sky Rainbow Pavilion. With its senior experts depleted and demon-blood reserves nearly exhausted, the court depended on his success 486 496 502.
Instead, Zhao Hongzhang merged with the Thousand-Eyed Nether Lord. Northern Yan’s Imperial Capital suffered a devastating attack, Emperor Jingyuan died, and the kingdom was described as existing in name alone. Tang Chong and the Silo Kingdom’s Holy Knight Thor investigated; Thor was killed, while Tang Chong escaped gravely wounded 503 506.
Restoration under Zhao Lingxiu
After the calamity, Zhao Lingxiu restored Northern Yan and incorporated Southern Qi—an achievement no previous Northern Yan emperor had accomplished 812.
By this later period, the court feared her increasingly brutal and unpredictable behavior following an evil god’s favor. She pursued blood sacrifices and the Sky-reaching Great Array, valuing power and the Great Nightmare’s approval over her territorial accomplishments 809 812.
