After once again watching Naruto summon either tadpoles or incomplete frogs, Jiraiya finally couldn't take it anymore.

Still struggling in Jiraiya's grip, Naruto immediately shouted, "What the hell? There's a shortcut? Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
But Jiraiya set Naruto down and said, "Naruto, if you want to control that Chakra I told you about, you need to enter that gate. As its container, you're still far too weak. If you want to enter that state again, you'll have to reach it through the fear of death. Remember that instant when you enter that place, and afterward, you'll be able to go in freely. Got it? "The fear of death? How am I supposed to—"
Before Naruto could grasp what Jiraiya meant, Jiraiya kicked him straight off the cliff. He plummeted rapidly toward the abyss below.
