Background / History
Buggy was raised by Gol D. Roger and served as part of the Roger Pirates. Rayleigh attempted to push him to develop the Chop Chop Fruit offensively, but Buggy's fear of death repeatedly prevented him from awakening the ability. Roger instead told him to follow his own path and pursue his dreams by his own methods. 12
Unable to live up to the legacy of Roger's crew, Buggy retreated to East Blue and occupied Orange Town. He drove the townspeople from the town proper and used it as a bomb-testing ground, but forbade his men from harming civilians, took only a portion of the town's food, and issued IOUs for supplies. 6
When two subordinates violated his rules by attacking the Pig Butcher and attempting to assault his wife, Can Yue intervened. Buggy later confirmed their crime and executed the Black-Nosed Clown himself. 7 14
Can Yue defeated Buggy at Orange Town, but the near-death experience enabled Buggy to partially awaken the Chop Chop Fruit. Rather than kill him, Can Yue challenged him to become stronger for a future rematch; Buggy resolved to stop running from death and make Roger's crew feared again. 12
Afterward, Buggy apologized to Orange Town, promised compensation, and declared that he would leave to become a pirate worthy of Roger's name. When Nami stole his treasure, however, he was forced to remain temporarily and work off a 10 million Beli debt by repairing the town and turning criminal subordinates over to the Marines. 14 15
Appearance
Buggy is a flamboyantly dressed pirate with heavy clown makeup and blue twin-tails. His appearance often projects a comic, exaggerated confidence that contrasts with his genuine combat ability. 8 15 175
- Colorful clown attire and makeup. 8 9
- Blue twin-tailed hairstyle. 15
- Often wears a cape emblazoned with his large red name. 175
- Commonly fights while floating with separated body parts. 9 11
Personality
Buggy is theatrical, boastful, and intensely concerned with reputation. He enjoys grand displays—such as transporting floating island fragments and erecting statues of himself and Roger—but his vanity is tied to a sincere desire to prove that Roger's former crewmates are not weak. 49 52 59
His earlier cowardice stemmed from an overwhelming fear of death and of losing the memories he shared with Roger. Can Yue's victory forced him to confront that fear, after which Buggy became markedly more determined and willing to face powerful enemies. 12 14
Despite his cruelty and opportunism, Buggy maintains personal rules. He forbids his crew from preying on civilians, punishes subordinates who violate that rule, and agrees to a truce with Smoker to prevent harm to Loguetown's residents. 6 14 53 He can also be unexpectedly loyal, protecting Can Yue after his battle with Momousagi and later joining the Straw Hats at Water Seven out of gratitude. 66 200
