Concealed King of Britain

Merlin concealed Artoria's sex through an illusion that separated the concepts of “Artoria” and “Artorius.” When she appeared as King Arthur, observers perceived her as male; when she appeared as a girl, they did not connect her to the king. 2

As a young Maiden Knight, she traveled with Kay and Merlin and crossed paths with Fujimaru Kyoya, who mistook her for Artorius's sister. Her swordsmanship was already nearly equal to Kyoya's, and she refused to abandon him when Vortigern's forces pursued him. 2 3

During the Trials of the Fairies, Artoria rejected the forced choice between sword and sheath. She took both, resolving not to sacrifice either Britain’s present or its future. 6 She later faced Vortigern with the Holy Sword of Stars, insisting that even a “borrowed ideal” became her own if she carried it through to the end. 7

Artoria gradually revealed her identity as a woman to the Knights of the Round Table and disclosed the coming decline of the Divine Era. Together, they arranged the integration of Anglo-Saxons and Celts and planned Camelot’s collapse to preserve Britain’s people. 67

Battle of Camlann and the Holy Grail

Artoria’s intended succession plan relied on Mordred’s staged rebellion and the protection of Avalon, which Artoria deliberately left behind. The plan collapsed when the rebellion erupted prematurely and became a reign of terror, leaving her knights seemingly slain and Britain ruled through fear. 146

Unable to accept the tragedies borne by Lancelot, Guinevere, Mordred, Agravain, and her other knights, Artoria sought the Holy Grail to redo history. She placed her body under the Holy Lance’s protection, entered suspended animation, and continued appearing in Holy Grail Wars as a Servant. 23 98 130

Fuyuki Holy Grail War

In Fuyuki, Artoria reclaimed Avalon from Emiya Shirou to offset Fujimaru Kyoya’s close-combat advantage. Avalon’s near-absolute defense forced Kyoya to retreat, though maintaining it consumed Mana. 90

She fought alongside Kyoya against the Demon God Pillars, using the wind around her concealed Holy Sword to support his mana-infused attacks. Their repeated clashes had given them a deep understanding of each other’s swordsmanship. 94

Artoria later revealed that she remained alive in suspended animation rather than truly dead. She invited Kyoya to Avalon after the Holy Grail War, intending to continue pursuing a better conclusion for Britain’s past. 98

Lostbelt Counterpart

A parallel Artoria appeared in a pruned Lostbelt ruled by Morgan. Unlike the Pan-Human king, she was a Paradise Fae born as the Child of Prophecy and was treated as a servant by village fairies, who forced her to do menial work and demanded that she provide wealth for them. 132

Initially timid and self-blaming, she believed her weakness had failed everyone who expected her to defeat Morgan. When confronted with the choice to submit, die, or retaliate against her abusers, she rejected all three prescribed paths and chose to leave on her own terms. 133

She joined Fujimaru Kyoya and Oberon in liberating humans from a Human Ranch. Though shaken by the deaths caused during the raid, she mastered lock-opening Magecraft, evacuated the prisoners, and chose to lead them to Londenion to build support through her own achievements. 134 136

Artoria accepted the title of Child of Prophecy as a tool rather than a chain: if fate aided her, she would use it; if it opposed her, she would resist it. 137 After ringing six bells and receiving the memories concealed within them, she led the allied forces toward Camelot. 141 142

Holy Sword User

To forge and wield the Holy Sword of Stars against the Harvest Star Vanguard, Lostbelt Artoria contacted her Pan-Human History counterpart in Avalon. The two merged, sharing their memories and resolve; the Lostbelt Artoria accepted the risk that surrendering her body could erase her. 145

As the Holy Sword User, the merged Artoria unleashed the Holy Sword of Stars at full power and destroyed the invading vanguard’s projection. 145 The Heavenly Wheel Saint King later divided her back into two distinct Artorias, allowing both versions to continue existing. 146

Appearance

Artoria is a blonde, green-eyed knight whose appearance is deliberately obscured by Merlin’s conceptual illusion when she acts as King Arthur. Her Lostbelt counterpart has the same face but initially carries herself with a softer, more girlish demeanor. 2 131

Her idealism is not passive. She understands political compromise, participated in a planned collapse of Camelot to preserve its people, and spent a millennium in suspended animation pursuing the Holy Grail. 67 98

The Lostbelt Artoria begins as kind, apologetic, and overly accommodating. She accepts mistreatment because she believes she has failed the expectations attached to the Child of Prophecy. 132 133 After leaving the village, she learns to choose for herself, accepts help without surrendering her agency, and develops into a leader who can reassure frightened humans and command an army. 136 137
