Chapter 16: "Sisters"

"Ugh."

Shien's expression stiffened, and he felt a bit speechless.

To Shien, an otherworldly being, the girl's words were undeniably arrogant.

If this were his previous life, people wouldn't have batted an eye at him being called a show-off.

But this was a world of swords and magic, a world with gods and Demon Lords, even nobles and royalty. Not only humans existed here, so perhaps such pronouncements weren't that out of the ordinary.

However, this also meant one thing.

Either the girl before him was incredibly arrogant and ignorant, or she was a genuine young lady with an extraordinary background.

Whichever it was, Shien wanted nothing to do with her.

Otherwise, judging by the typical course of events in stories, all sorts of trouble would inevitably follow.

Thus, Shien made a swift decision.

"I am truly sorry. Please forgive my ignorant question, I shall take my leave now."

With those words, Shien bowed his head as if in deep humility, then turned tail and fled.

The girl was stunned.

Clearly, she hadn't expected Shien to act in such a manner.

By the time the girl reacted, Shien had already disappeared into the crowd, his figure completely lost.

The girl stared blankly in the direction Shien had vanished for several seconds before she let out a soft chuckle.

Her laughter chimed like silver bells, incredibly pleasant to the ear.

Such a scene was enough to make bystanders turn their heads, even become captivated and entranced.

However, the people around her seemed completely oblivious to the stunningly beautiful girl beside them, walking past as if she weren't there.

Until...

"Young miss."

Just as the girl's laughter subsided, a voice devoid of emotion, lacking even the slightest inflection, echoed.

At some point, someone had parted the crowd and was approaching the girl.

If Shien were still there, he would surely be surprised.

Because the person who had parted the crowd looked exactly like the girl, as if they'd been carved from the same mold. They were like twin sisters, identical in height, build, hair color, and eye color.

However, unlike the first girl, this one was completely expressionless, showing no trace of emotion. Furthermore, she wasn't wearing a formal dress, but the attire of a maid.

If the first girl was a noble lady enjoying a stroll through the streets on a whim, then this maid was a capable and reliable subordinate.

"You've arrived, Lasha."

The girl looked at the maid, who had parted the crowd and looked identical to her, like a sister, and a warm, happy smile bloomed on her face.

"Yes, I have purchased what you wanted, young miss."

The maid, Lasha, replied in a flat tone, cradling a bag. The aroma emanating from it suggested it contained delicious food.

It was clear that the girl had asked Lasha to buy some tasty treats.

However, looking at the girl's seemingly happy and delighted expression, Lasha seemed a bit puzzled.

"You seem to be in a good mood, Young Miss Laisha."

Lasha had seen through the girl's emotions.

The girl—Laisha—seemed to have no intention of hiding it.

"Don't worry about it. I just met an interesting adventurer," Laisha said, still thinking about the recent encounter, a joyful smile on her face. "He wasn't afraid or in awe, nor did he know who I was. He just seemed worried about encountering trouble when I didn't even state my name, and then he fled. I've never met anyone like that before."

Upon hearing this, Lasha asked no further questions.

Though she didn't know what had happened, Lasha was no longer surprised by Laisha doing something on a whim.

After all, the young miss whom Lasha served, who looked like her twin, was someone who acted on impulse and did whatever caught her fancy.

This time, she must have done something on a whim.

It's just...

"It's been a long time since I've seen you so happy, young miss."

Lasha voiced her thoughts honestly.

"Now that you mention it," Laisha's smile softened slightly, and she spoke with a hint of nostalgia, "how long has it been since I last laughed this happily?"

Laisha couldn't remember.

But she didn't dwell on it, quickly regaining a relaxed expression.

"Speaking of which..."

Lasha looked again in the direction Shien had left, her eyes flickering slightly.

"The magic on that adventurer seems a bit unusual, and the package he's carrying appears to have a familiar power. It shouldn't just be my imagination, right?"

Lasha became quite thoughtful.

The reason she had spoken to Shien wasn't just a whim after hearing him speak; it was for this very reason.

"My [Cognitive Interference] didn't seem to have much effect on him. Otherwise, even if I approached him, he wouldn't have immediately noticed my presence and looked directly at me at the first opportunity."

Lasha murmured to herself.

"Could he be..."

Perhaps thinking of something, Lasha's gaze began to turn cold, growing dangerous.

"Young lady?"

Lasha, unaware of what Lasha was thinking, called out to her, snapping her back to attention.

"It's nothing. Let's go."

Lasha smiled again, saying this to Lasha.

"It seems I'll have to linger in this town for a while."

With that thought, Lasha turned around and left.

Seeing this, Lasha asked nothing and quietly followed.

And from beginning to end, the people around them didn't notice these two girls, who were like twins, as they silently departed like unseen ghosts.

Meanwhile, Shien, unaware that he had already been targeted, was feeling fortunate.

"Glad I was smart."

Shien, having run a good distance while blending into the crowd, let out a sigh of relief.

His own troubles weren't resolved, and Shien didn't want to get involved in new ones.

"I should find a place to rest and enjoy my first night in human society in this other world."

No longer thinking about troublesome matters, Shien decided.

After ten days of living like a wild man, he truly wanted to improve his quality of life.

As for other things...

"I'll worry about them later."

And so, Shien began to wander through the town.
