Before Stark could carry the nuclear missile through the portal, the portal generator exploded. As the column of light vanished, the enormous hole in the sky began to shrink until it closed completely.

For some inexplicable reason, the instant the portal closed, all the Chitauri troops on Earth lost their vitality and collapsed.

"Damn it!"
