After a contemptuous chuckle, Martin Lee said to Nick Fury with biting sarcasm, "I wonder in what capacity you're asking me, Director? S.H.I.E.L.D.? Or Hydra?"
"Although Hydra infiltrated our ranks, S.H.I.E.L.D. still represents the World Security Council. We have a right to know exactly what you've done!"
Nick Fury roared forcefully. After a thorough investigation, most of the Hydra agents within S.H.I.E.L.D. had been purged, giving him the confidence to raise his voice.
"Oh... so you do remember that you represent the World Security Council."
Martin's words dripped with sarcasm.
"I thought you were an official organization belonging exclusively to America. After all, judging by how you usually behave, I find it hard to see you as any sort of global organization."
In truth, Martin Lee had no idea what S.H.I.E.L.D. had actually done, nor did he have any interest in finding out. All of this came from Kraft's complaints whenever they talked about S.H.I.E.L.D.
"S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters are in America, its founders were American, and even its biggest financial backers are American companies. Some bias is inevitable, but we are still overseen by the World Security Council. S.P.E.A.R., on the other hand, is the intelligence agency of a single nation."
Nick Fury did not dodge Martin's accusations. He simply believed that, despite its biases, S.H.I.E.L.D. was still contributing to world peace overall, and brought up S.P.E.A.R. as a comparison.
"But as far as I know, S.P.E.A.R. was founded precisely because S.H.I.E.L.D. was far too biased..."
Martin curled his lip disdainfully at Nick Fury's explanation. He was no clueless idiot, and Fury wasn't going to fool him with that line.
"Then let me put it another way. Among S.H.I.E.L.D.'s senior leadership, ignoring skin color and looking only at nationality, how many aren't American? And don't try to fool me with those
