Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Titled Douluo — earlier breakthrough | 106 | Recalled retrospectively: his serpent Martial Soul evolved upon reaching Titled Douluo, producing a Poison Pill in his lower dantian. |
| Growth-oriented Soul Bone and detoxification | 104 105 | Absorbs a ten-thousand-year right arm bone remodeled through Lin Manshan's Soul Power. Twenty days of treatment remove toxins and repair hidden injuries; detoxification and conditioning raise his Soul Power by one level. |
| Level 93; Azure Serpent Dragon Emperor | 105 | Dragon Ganoderma raises his Soul Power another level and evolves his Martial Soul into a flood dragon, which he names the Azure Serpent Dragon Emperor. |
| Eight Extraordinary Meridians opened; Poison Core cultivation | 133 | All eight meridians are unblocked. Compressed Soul Power reserves exceed those immediately after his level-93 breakthrough by at least 20%, excluding his Poison Core. His overall strength is estimated to rival an ordinary level-95 Titled Douluo. |
| Level 94 | 228 | Revealed during Tang Hao's ambush. His Eighth Spirit Ability briefly restrains Tang Hao before their attacks collide. |
| Full-body Soul Bone equipment | 248 | Replaces his inferior right arm bone with Tang Hao's higher-quality bone and absorbs additional bones. Chooses to erase their skills in exchange for continued growth potential. |
| Level 96 | 254 | Explicitly identified while fighting the Thousand-pound Ant Emperors, with a complete set of Soul Bones and his second-stage Martial Soul Avatar. |
| First documented God Trial reward | 256 | Absorbs a Ghost-faced Demonic Wolf's energy crystal. Soul Ring and Soul Bone year limits rise by about 3,000 years on average; his rings become four purple and five black. |
| Death Spider Emperor reward | 257 | Defeats a beast exceeding 65,000 years. Average ring and bone year limits rise by about 3,600 years, and his innate poison gains stronger corrosive properties. He remains level 96. |
| Level 97 — Fierce Claw Evil Dragon reward | 257 | Defeats the 70,000-year dark-and-gold beast; average ring and bone year limits rise by about 3,800 years. |
| Death Sandworm reward | 257 | Defeats a poison-and-earth beast exceeding 80,000 years through speed and evasive tactics. Average ring and bone year limits rise by about 4,400 years. |
| Level 98 — Nine-eyed Scorpion Emperor reward | 257 | Defeats the 90,000-year beast after a day-and-night battle. Average ring and bone year limits rise by about 5,000 years. |
| Peak level 98 — Sea Dragon reward | 257 | Wins a three-day battle using Yangquan spring water, then spends ten days absorbing the reward. Average year limits rise by over 5,500 years; his rings become eight black and one red. His Martial Soul gains six attributes and evolves beyond a flood dragon. |
| Level 99 Limit Douluo | 268 278 | Reveals his breakthrough to Ghost Douluo; his level is subsequently witnessed at the Clear Sky Sect. |
| Dark Gold Griffin Emperor reward | 325 | Defeats a 150,000-year gold-elemental beast in the Life and Death Arena. Soul Ring and Soul Bone year limits increase by about 8,000 years. |
| Six black and three red Soul Rings | 332 | Absorbs the Nine-Headed Serpent Emperor's crystal, increasing ring and bone year limits by just over 10,000 years. All bones except his head and left arm bones surpass 100,000 years. Learns that his Ninth Trial tests the seven emotions. |
Background / History
Family poisoning and isolation
Dugu Bo's family suffers from an inherited poison that becomes more severe with each generation. His son became critically ill, and Dugu Yan later lost both parents. Dugu Bo and his granddaughter consequently depended on one another for years 45 46 141.
Before becoming a Titled Douluo, he stole medicinal herbs from Chrysanthemum Douluo in a desperate attempt to save his son. The theft led to nearly ten years of pursuit, during which he narrowly escaped death several times through control abilities, widespread poison, and speed 141.
He searched across the continent for a cure without success. His existing Poison Pill did not resolve the condition; Lin Manshan later identified the harmful toxins as foreign poison acquired through Soul Rings rather than the family's innate Martial Soul poison 46 47 49 104.
His personality and inherited poisoning kept him largely solitary. He hunted his own Soul Rings, relying on poison and strategy rather than direct attacks; his Eighth and Ninth Soul Rings originally had year limits of 65,000 and 75,000 years respectively 257.
Meeting Lin Manshan
Dugu Bo accepted Lin Manshan as his grandson-in-law after hearing about his treatment of Dugu Yan and receiving Startled Swan Steps among the betrothal gifts. Nevertheless, he resented Lin Manshan's subsequent absence of more than two years 96.
When Lin Manshan finally arrived, Dugu Bo had already gathered medicinal herbs and a ten-thousand-year Soul Bone for treatment. Their search for a suitable fire-attribute medicinal ingredient led them to his natural medicine garden—the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in Sunset Forest 96 97 98.
Lin Manshan's treatment removed the accumulated toxins and repaired Dugu Bo's internal injuries. Only after restoring his body did they use Dragon Ganoderma to evolve his Martial Soul 104 105.
Appearance
- Initial appearance: An elderly man wearing green armor, with long green-streaked hair, emerald eyes, and an almost entirely green outfit 96.
- Later transformation: Soul Bone absorption and subsequent opportunities make him look several decades younger and markedly stronger 248 267.
- Evolved Martial Soul: By the Clear Sky Sect confrontation, it has golden pupils, a ferocious dragon head, gnarled horns, a slender dark-gray body, and golden five-fingered claws 278.
Personality
Dugu Bo is fiercely protective of Dugu Yan. He accepts Lin Manshan's other relationships but explicitly warns that saving his life will not excuse mistreating his granddaughter. His stated hope is to live peacefully with her and a future great-grandchild 96 138.
He is blunt, proud, and fond of showing off his newfound strength. Dugu Yan's praise encourages him to become more demonstrative in battle, while defeating Chrysanthemum Douluo leaves him openly delighted 106 148.
His dealings with outsiders are shrewd and often manipulative. He negotiates for rare herbs through Lin Manshan's medical services, uses sensitive information to sway prospective allies, and conceals the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well even from recently recruited academy members 142 164 165 222.
Despite holding grudges, he can compromise when his family's future requires it. He settles his old dispute with Spirit Hall to secure time for Dugu Yan and Lin Manshan to grow, and later distinguishes between the Clear Sky Sect leaders responsible for attacking him and uninvolved survivors 141 285.
Abilities & Skills
Innate Poison and Poison Core
His Martial Soul produces an innate poison that he condenses around his existing Poison Pill into a Poison Core 106 133.
- The Poison Pill originally accounts for roughly half his strength 106.
- Poison Core energy cannot be converted back into ordinary Soul Power, but remains directly usable for attacks 133.
- Later trial rewards strengthen his poison's potency and corrosiveness 257.
- He can poison mist, rain, and physical attacks; even other venomous beasts are vulnerable to his strengthened poison 228 273 279.
- He recognizes that inhaling his poison could aggravate Tang Hao's existing internal injuries 228.
Time Stasis
His Eighth Spirit Ability restrains targets within a controlled area 228 279.
- At level 94, it briefly interrupts Tang Hao's movement 228.
- At level 99, its range covers the Clear Sky Sect's entire mountain peak, visibly suspending snowflakes and mist 279.
- Observers judge that anyone below Titled Douluo would be unable to break free from the mountain-wide effect 279.
- He also concentrates the ability to freeze five Titled Douluo during the battle 281.
Jade Phosphor Divine Light
A powerful poisonous attack used against the Golden Mane Lion Mastiff 108.
- Dugu Bo considers a direct hit almost certainly fatal to anyone below Titled Douluo 108.
- His Eighth and Ninth Soul Skills initially consume so much Soul Power that he cannot maintain them for long; he withdraws them early to preserve escape reserves 108.
Martial Soul Avatar and Dragonified Form
After his Martial Soul evolves, he develops a second-stage Avatar that he names Dragonified Form 228.
- Supports flight, powerful close-range attacks, and poison-infused strikes 228.
- Works alongside his full-body Soul Bones and learned martial techniques rather than depending on Soul Bone skills 248.
- Later enhancements allow him to overpower large Spirit Beasts with punches and kicks 254 272.
Elemental and Weather Control
By the Sea Dragon trial, his Martial Soul possesses poison, water, wind, earth, darkness, and gold attributes 257.
- His original water-control talent comes from the Immortal Herb and is initially limited 138.
- The academy inauguration's apparent instant weather manipulation actually requires several days of gathering surrounding moisture into clouds beforehand 138.
- Later God Trial rewards remodel his body alongside his Martial Soul, allowing him to unleash storm attacks directly through Spiritual Power and Soul Power control 257.
Jing Tian Treasure Codex Techniques
Lin Manshan's cultivation methods and self-created arts expand Dugu Bo's capabilities beyond conventional poison attacks 109 133 257.
- Jing Tian Jue: Opens previously blocked meridians, increases storage capacity, and assists Poison Core cultivation 106 109 133.
- Startled Swan Steps: Provides rapid ground movement; his speed becomes sufficient to evade Ghost and Chrysanthemum Douluos' fusion-skill setup 133 147 254.
- Purple Cloud Eye: Helps him dodge venom and identify openings against powerful trial beasts 257.
- Jade Hand Technique and Dragon Catching Skill: Reinforce close combat, incorporating force-generation principles from the Nine Absolutes of Clear Sky and Lin Manshan's saber arts 228 257.
Poison, Snake, and Medicinal Knowledge
- Recognizes snake habitats and vulnerable points, quickly defeating the Medusa Snake found for Dugu Yan's Soul Ring 105 106.
- Maintains extensive living and dried medicinal collections accumulated over decades 97 142.
- Shares alchemy interests with Lin Manshan and Yang Wudi, while relying on Lin Manshan for specialized diagnosis, herb identification, and pill refinement 97 100 165.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well: His secluded medicine garden in Sunset Forest; its environment suppresses his poisoning before treatment and supplies rare herbs afterward. Knowledge of its location is restricted to a small inner circle 48 98 222.
- Aromatic Silk Beauty: A poison-suppressing Immortal Herb used to protect Dugu Yan's entry into the valley. It later helps attract Yang Wudi's interest 101 165.
- Dragon Ganoderma: Called Ninth-grade Dragon Ganoderma and Nine Treasures Dragon Ganoderma in the supplied passages. Its water attribute complements his poison, and consumption evolves his Martial Soul 100 104 105.
- Immortal Herb catalog: A booklet covering nearly twenty herbs, publicly offered for auction and later shared with Spirit Hall 138 150.
- Recording Stone: Records evidence associated with Tang Hao's attack, giving Dugu Bo leverage in the subsequent dispute 233.
- Trial supplies: Lin Manshan gives him Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well spring water, three King Yama's Posts, and access to additional hidden weapons 257.
Soul Bones
Dugu Bo deliberately has Lin Manshan erase his Soul Bone skills so the bones can continue evolving. He regards their bodily reinforcement as more valuable than supplementary skills 248.
| Body Part | After the Sea Dragon Trial | Later Documented Year Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Head | 50,000 years 257 | Around 90,000 years 332 |
| Torso | Over 100,000 years 257 | Over 100,000 years 332 |
| Left arm | 60,000 years 257 | Around 90,000 years 332 |
| Right arm | 95,000 years; inherited Clear Sky Sect bone obtained from Tang Hao 257 | Over 100,000 years 332 |
| Left leg | 95,000 years; inherited Clear Sky Sect bone obtained from Tang Hao 257 | Over 100,000 years 332 |
| Right leg | 75,000 years 257 | Over 100,000 years 332 |

Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing Tian Xing Academy
Dugu Bo announces Tian Xing Academy and displays his evolved Martial Soul at its inauguration. Enrollment does not distinguish between nobles and commoners, and graduates remain free to join other forces. His poison demonstration warns outsiders against provoking the academy 138.
He subsequently uses Lin Manshan's medical services to acquire rare ingredients and build connections. His offers to Yang Wudi and Niu Gao emphasize friendship, personal independence, and neutrality toward their existing grudges rather than service as subordinates 142 164 165.
Conflict with Tang Hao
When Tang Hao attacks the academy's traveling group, Dugu Bo intercepts him and protects the carriage. A Recording Stone later helps expose the attack and damage the reputations of Tang Hao, Tang San, and the Clear Sky Sect 228 233.
Dugu Bo and Lin Manshan's campaign eventually results in Tang Hao's death by poison. The recovered Soul Bones become part of Dugu Bo's full-body equipment 248 270.
God Trials
Dugu Bo's trials transform him from a poison-centered fighter into a multi-attribute combatant with greatly strengthened rings, bones, body, and Spiritual Power. He alternates dangerous challenges with rest periods to consolidate the rewards 256 257.
His later challenges include the 150,000-year Dark Gold Griffin Emperor and the Nine-Headed Serpent Emperor. By the latter reward, he has three red Soul Rings and learns that his Ninth Trial concerns the seven emotions. Completion of that trial is not documented in the supplied material 325 332.
War against the Clear Sky Sect
Dugu Bo publicly declares war after presenting evidence connecting the sect to the attempt on his life and Tang San's Evil Soul Master cultivation. He opens the assault with mountain-wide Time Stasis and poisonous rain, supported by Tian Xing Academy's fighters 278 279 280.
After the responsible leaders are eliminated, he refuses further slaughter of uninvolved survivors. He leaves the remaining sect affairs to other factions, having used the campaign to secure substantial resources 285 287.
Later Hunts and Political Activity
He continues supporting the academy's advancement through high-level Spirit Beast hunts. Later expeditions secure resources associated with the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python, and he accompanies Lin Manshan and Zhu Zhuyun to Qian Renxue's annual gathering 334.
