Background / History

Lin Manshan was born into a commoner family whose livelihood was chopping wood and making charcoal. His ancestors had never produced a Soul Master, and after his parents died, he became the final surviving branch of the Lin family. Old Jack's family took him in, though Old Jack refused to decide whether he should join Martial Soul Hall because he was not Lin Manshan's biological grandfather. 3 55

He awakened the Firewood Chopper Martial Soul with only Level 3 Innate Soul Power. Aware of his weak body and poor cultivation aptitude, he trained relentlessly, using Soul Power cultivation, blade practice, running, and later blacksmithing to strengthen himself. 3 5 8 15

As a child, he inherited the memories of Ni Tian Er Xing and learned Netherworld Techniques, including Soul Binding, Beast Taming, alchemy, Soul Crossing, and Spirit Communication. He used insects and birds controlled through Beast Taming to observe Tang San's training, learning portions of several techniques while failing to uncover the Mysterious Heaven Skill and Purple Demon Eye. 6 8 9

After obtaining his First Soul Ring, his Martial Soul evolved but could neither retain Soul Rings nor generate conventional Soul Skills. Nuoding Academy consequently granted him early graduation. He accepted the decision calmly and continued his cultivation through forging, medicine, and independently created combat techniques. 29 31

Appearance

Lin Manshan is a tall, sharp-featured young man whose body changed substantially through cultivation and Soul Bone absorption. At one point he stood 1.63 meters tall, wore black, and tied his black hair back simply; later, he reached 1.77 meters. 33 34 58

  • Water-blue eyes described as lively and deep. 34
  • Features likened to being carved by a blade. 34 139
  • Initially bronzed by forging, later noticeably fairer in complexion. 139
  • Often wears a mask outside because of the attention his appearance attracts. 139 215

Personality

Lin Manshan is diligent, practical, and highly self-aware. Rather than relying on talent he does not possess, he compensates through physical training, forging, pharmacology, careful planning, and repeated experimentation. 5 15 73 181

He treats benefactors and companions generously, repaying assistance with money, medicine, protection, and opportunities. At the same time, he is explicit that he repays enmity with enmity rather than forgiving those who attempt to harm him. 80 159 214

He is strategically deceptive when dealing with enemies. He surveils Tang San, manipulates information surrounding Tang Hao and the Blue Silver Emperor, and feigns injuries during combat to exhaust opponents. 8 117 194 265

Abilities & Skills

Martial Soul: Firewood Chopper / Great Blade

Lin Manshan's original Firewood Chopper Martial Soul mutated after his First Soul Ring absorption, becoming a greatsword and later referred to as a great saber or Great Blade. It cannot retain conventional Soul Rings or produce normal Soul Skills. 29 55 121

  • Its abnormality forces him to develop Self-Created Soul Skills instead of relying on ring-granted abilities. 31 42
  • He can activate a Martial Soul True Body without relying on the same soul-consuming method used by ordinary Artifact Soul Masters. 212
  • In his True Body state, he catches Tang San's Clear Sky Hammer strike one-handed and defeats him with Blade Light. 212

Netherworld Techniques

From Ni Tian Er Xing's memories, Lin Manshan learned several specialized techniques with uses beyond combat. 6

  • Beast Taming Technique — Controls animals for reconnaissance, tracking, and path-marking. Its effective link range grows with his Soul Power. 8 9 63 117

  • Alchemy Technique — Creates pills for detoxification, body conditioning, cultivation support, and Martial Soul-related treatment. 48 113 145

Soul Bones

Lin Manshan possesses several high-grade Soul Bones that continually strengthen his body and abilities.

  • Hundred Thousand Year Blue Silver Emperor Right Leg Bone — Raises his Soul Power to Level 18, continually modifies his body, and provides life energy for healing. 33
  • Dark Gold Dreadclaw Bear External Palm Bones — Greatly increase his strength, allowing him to injure ordinary ten-thousand-year Soul Beasts. 37
  • Eight Spider Lances — An External Spirit Bone obtained from the Soul Devouring Spider King; it significantly enhances his strength and can devour a hunted Soul Beast's essence. 66
  • The Eight Spider Lances later evolve past the hundred-thousand-year level after absorbing the Soul Devouring Spider Emperor's essence, improving their devouring efficiency. 274
  • Spirit Condensing Wisdom Skull — Raises his Spiritual Power to the Vast realm and allows him to condense spiritual impacts. 223
