Background / History
Shirley's parents disappeared in a factory “leak” incident eleven years before her investigation of the Sixth District. She describes them as having died mysteriously, leaving her and A'gou to fend for themselves. Shirley was six at the time, and many memories of the period remain blurred or incomplete. 113 132
A'gou may originally have been summoned by an Annihilation Cultist who was later killed by Deep Sea Church Guardians. The Abyssal Hound nearly killed Shirley before becoming inexplicably bound to her; over time, the two merged into a symbiotic pair connected by a black chain. Although others repeatedly mistake her for an Annihilation Cultist, Shirley rejects all cult affiliations. 113 132
Having survived in the slums, Shirley developed a talent for deception and investigation. She searched for evidence of the great fire connected to her parents' fate, infiltrated Nina's school under a supernatural disguise, and initially posed as Nina's classmate while conducting her investigation. 114 125 126
Shirley first came to Duncan's attention after defeating Sun God cultists with A'gou. Initially terrified of Duncan and his reputation, she gradually accepted his help during the investigation into the Sixth District, the factory fire, and the nightmare tied to her childhood memories. 76 112 131 133
After losing her home, Shirley stayed at Duncan's antique shop and formed a friendship with Nina. Following an Endtime Evangelist attack that left her injured and her home severely damaged, she accepted Duncan's protection and eventually became a member of the Lost Homeland. 129 186 390
Appearance
In human form, Shirley is a short, thin girl commonly seen in a black dress. Her small stature is partly attributed to childhood malnutrition. After her transformation in the Abyssal Deep Sea, her human form permanently retains glowing blood-red eyes. 76 141 717 729
- Less than 1.6 meters tall in human form 141
- Usually wears a black dress 76 131
- Connected to A'gou by a black iron chain extending from her arm 131 729
- Demon form grows to nearly three meters tall 729
- Demon form possesses black bone armor, blade-like bone spurs, and twelve symmetrical skeletal limbs 730
- Can manifest skeletal wing-like appendages for movement and balance 803
Personality
Shirley is stubborn, practical, and fiercely independent. She refuses to abandon her investigation into her parents' deaths despite fear and danger, and she prioritizes immediate survival over abstract concerns about what she has become. 117 730
She often tries to appear harmless, polite, and well-behaved around intimidating people, particularly during her early encounters with Duncan. Beneath that act, she is rough, blunt, violent in combat, and quick to panic internally when faced with overwhelming supernatural threats. 112 123 149
Growing up in the slums made her observant and adept at reading people. She can lie convincingly, improvise identities under pressure, and conceal her intentions while preparing for a fight. 574 594
Despite her harsh upbringing, Shirley is emotionally attached to A'gou, values Nina's kindness, and is deeply affected by the fate of Shirin in the Dream of the Nameless. 129 598 643
Abilities & Skills
Symbiotic Contract with A'gou
Shirley's central ability is her symbiotic bond with A'gou, an Abyssal Hound. The black chain connecting them permits mental communication and allows them to share reason, humanity, and perception. 131 729
- Communicates mentally with A'gou over their chain 131 717
- Shares visions and can be affected by A'gou's emotions or premonitions 113 715 717
- Receives rapid recovery from their symbiosis; injuries from the Endtime Evangelists heal remarkably quickly 198
- Their bond can resist unusual mental influences, including a god's gaze 460
- The chain can be disrupted or broken by Abyssal Lord corruption, leaving both partners unstable and incomplete 717 727
- After remolding, A'gou is her Guardian Dog and Shirley is A'gou's Contracted Human 728
Chain Combat
Shirley is a close-range fighter who uses A'gou as a chained flail rather than fighting like a conventional summoner. Her style is described as simple, brutal, and effective. 135
- Swings A'gou with enough force to incapacitate cultists and launch enemies into buildings 76 135
- Uses chain strikes against shadow-manipulating attackers and Sun Remnants 135 596
- Employs the attack informally called “Meteor Dog” 596
- Remains effective while injured, outnumbered, or under supernatural curses 76 185
Spirit Body Fire
Within the Dream of the Nameless, Shirley manifests Spirit Body Fire while resisting an attempt to pollute her mind. She attributes this protection to Duncan. 597
- Incinerates Sun Remnants that repeatedly reform through shadows 597
- Resists mental pollution and corruption attempts 597
- Its known manifestation is tied to Duncan's protection and occurs under exceptional dreamscape conditions 597
Abyssal Demon Form
Shirley's transformed body is highly adapted to the Abyssal Deep Sea. It grants immense physical strength, durability, predatory instincts, and skeletal appendages suited for hostile terrain. 722 726 730
- Defeats and intimidates surrounding Abyssal Demons 722 726
- Forms sharp bone spurs capable of impaling enemies 722
- Uses multiple skeletal limbs for mobility and stability 729 730
- Can return to a human-sized form, though her blood-red eyes remain 729
- Uncontrollably absorbs the remains of dead demons, a side effect she finds unpleasant 730
Deception and Investigation
Shirley is an experienced infiltrator who uses cover identities, social intuition, and A'gou's supernatural disguise to gather information. 125 574
- Posed as Nina's classmate to investigate activity at the school 123 125
- Uses the identity “Sarah” to infiltrate Annihilation Cultists in the Dream of the Nameless 574 575
- Extracts intelligence without revealing her true allegiance 574
- Captures and marks an Annihilation Cultist for future identification 576
- Has no formal occult education and struggles with complex rituals and academic coursework 546 728
Relationships
- A'gou — Her Abyssal Hound, closest companion, and symbiotic partner since the death of her parents. Their roles reverse after their contract is reforged, but neither considers the change important compared with remaining together. 113 728 729
- Duncan Abnormall — Initially a figure Shirley and A'gou fear as an overwhelming “big shot.” He becomes her protector, captain, and benefactor, helping investigate her past, stabilize her sanity, and rescue her from the Abyssal Deep Sea. 112 132 715 721
- Nina — Shirley's first close friend outside her life with A'gou. Nina accepts Shirley's deception, shares her room with her, and offers her a place to live after her home is destroyed. 125 129 198
- Shirin — An elf guide Shirley meets in the Dream of the Nameless. They fight together against Sun Remnants, and Shirley is distressed when the first Shirin she knows transforms into a tree. 594 597 598
- Lucretia — An ally encountered in the Dream of the Nameless. The two verify one another's identities with a shared code before working together in the forest. 598 599
Story Role / Major Arcs
Sixth District and the Great Fire
Shirley investigates the factory incident that took her parents eleven years earlier. Duncan accompanies her through the Sixth District, where they uncover evidence that the factory's fire was concealed by an unseen “curtain” rather than erased naturally. 113 116
Nightmares and the Antique Shop
A nightmare connected to Shirley's childhood fire draws Duncan into her dreamscape. Their investigation reveals that dream injuries can manifest in reality, while Shirley's stay at the antique shop introduces her to a safer life with Nina. 131 133 137
Dream of the Nameless
Inside the corrupted forest dreamscape, Shirley impersonates an Annihilation Cultist, gathers intelligence about erosion and the Silent Wall, and fights Sun Remnants alongside Shirin. After Shirin transforms into a tree, Shirley reunites with Lucretia and continues relaying information to Duncan's group. 574 597 598 599
Holy Land Island and the Abyssal Deep Sea
On Holy Land Island, Shirley and A'gou are overwhelmed by a vision revealing that the island is part of the Abyssal Lord and that humans are a differentiated form of Abyssal Demon. When a spacetime mechanism separates them and sends Shirley into the Abyssal Deep Sea, she fully transforms to survive, reunites with A'gou, and reforges their broken contract. 715 721 727 728
Anomaly Beyond the Blueprint
Navigator Two identifies Shirley as an individual outside the shelter's predetermined blueprint. It concludes that her transformation resulted not from external information, but from being affected by Duncan's “super-system” characteristic. 803 805
