Background / History

Alice was formerly transported between city-states in a sealed wooden box under the official designation Anomaly 099. She retained no memory of her origin, hometown, education, or life before confinement; most of her recollections were a drowsy state likely caused by sealing or suppression. Her escorts feared her, and their conversations indicated that multiple anomalies were routinely transferred between sealing chambers. 12 13

She escaped when the ship transporting her collided with the Lost Homeland. Pulling her coffin through the Boundless Sea, she used its lid as a paddle, climbed aboard with exceptional strength, and surrendered to Duncan after he intimidated her with ghostly flames. Duncan accepted her as a crew member but initially had Goat Head monitor her. 11 14

While aboard the Lost Homeland, Alice gradually developed curiosity about herself and the outside world. She could read and possessed innate practical knowledge despite having no memory of learning, but she lacked firsthand experience with ordinary life. Duncan began educating her, brought city-state supplies aboard for her to examine, and eventually fulfilled his promise to let her see Pland. 22 161 198

Duncan’s investigation connected Alice’s coffin to the execution of Frost Queen Lei Nuola half a century earlier. The coffin preserved echoes of the execution, while Alice herself had no knowledge of Lei Nuola, Frosthold, or “Alice’s Guillotine.” Duncan ultimately stabilized the coffin with Spirit Body Fire, making it respond to his commands rather than Alice’s. 99 102 103

Alice later entered city-states in disguise and began working at Duncan’s antique shop. Although her appearance closely resembles Lei Nuola’s, she rejects the idea that she must be the Frost Queen, choosing to value her own life and identity instead. 199 250 492

The truth of her creation emerged much later: Alice is not Lei Nuola’s resurrection vessel or replica. She was created in the deep sea by a flawed replica of the Abyssal Lord, after Lei Nuola’s body and the execution tool known as Alice’s Guillotine sank together. 488 566

Her connection to the Abyssal Lord also identifies her as LH-03, Navigator Three, a Navigation Host able to process routes and information that ordinary observers cannot comprehend. She eventually accessed a deeper state through the Lost Homeland’s helm, becoming temporarily one with the ship’s soul. 731 796

Appearance

Alice resembles an exquisitely made Gothic doll: graceful and elegant when still, yet visibly uncanny once her doll-like nature becomes apparent. Her face is identical to Frost Queen Lei Nuola’s, though her mannerisms and temperament are markedly different. 11 99 492
