Background / History

Hela is Odin’s eldest daughter and once served as his right-hand woman during his campaigns. Her ambition grew beyond ruling the Nine Realms to conquering the universe. Odin stripped her of her power and imprisoned her for nearly two thousand years; his life maintained the seal. Thor and Loki were unaware of their sister until Odin revealed her existence shortly before his death 1034 1184 1185 1193.

Freed when Odin died, Hela demanded that Thor and Loki kneel to her and crushed Mjolnir when Thor attacked. She followed the Rainbow Bridge to Asgard despite Odin’s warning that her return could bring about Ragnarok 1184 1185.

Allen and Artoria intercepted her before she could massacre Asgardian warriors. Artoria defeated Hela, who agreed that she could take the throne but could not slaughter her opponents. Frigga welcomed her home and acknowledged that, as Odin’s eldest daughter, she stood ahead of Thor in the line of succession 1185 1187.

As ruler, Hela faced widespread fear and hostility. Frigga retained the loyalty of many Asgardians, leaving Hela reliant on her Undead Army and Fenrir. Hela began replacing opponents in office and planned a war to win the soldiers’ support 1188 1193.

During Ragnarok, Hela fought Surtur to keep him from destroying the World Tree beneath Asgard’s palace. Allen saved her and offered her a position in his own universe on the condition that she leave Asgard and follow him. She accepted and entered the Azerath Universe 1199.

Hela is ambitious, proud, and drawn to battle. She treats victory as more important than fairness and is initially quick to answer opposition with violence. Her long imprisonment left her more irritable and merciless, particularly toward Odin’s family and legacy 1185 1186 1188.

Her rule also shows political adaptability. Barred from purging her opponents, she instead uses her authority to remove them from office and considers military victory a way to earn Asgardian support 1193.
