Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Although expelled from the clan, his parentage remains a significant source of protection and influence. His family provided cultivation assistance, but a Martial Soul mutation and extremely low innate Soul Power prevented him from becoming a powerful Soul Master 4 5 65.

He continued meditating and researching Martial Souls into his fifties without breaking through Level 30. His experiences included expeditions and high-level battles alongside Flender and Liu Erlong, giving him knowledge unavailable to most low-ranked Soul Masters 4 10.

Bibi Dong was his first love. Their separation left her believing him heartless, but he later attributed his departure to the previous Pope’s influence. By their reunion in Spirit City, they had not met for twenty years 80.

He can recognize the limits of his own teaching. His concern for his disciples extends to practical care and political protection, but personal attachments influence his decisions. Taking Shi Yi as a Disciple

Yu Xiaogang meets Shi Yi in Nuoding Academy’s library after the boy questions his theory. Shi Yi’s intelligent living Martial Soul prompts him to offer an apprenticeship. Their relationship soon becomes an exchange of ideas rather than one-way instruction, with Yu providing a stable environment in which Shi Yi can read and cultivate 4 5 6 7 8.

Two years later, Yu accepts Tang San and arranges the disciples’ introduction. He discusses Tang San’s development with Shi Yi, then accompanies both boys to obtain their first Soul Rings 7 8 9 10.

Shrek Academy

At Shrek, Yu supports Shi Yi’s appointment as a theory teacher and assumes responsibility for the students’ instruction. His original ambition to build a strong team around Tang San weakens as divisions within the group become apparent 31 33 40.

The move to Blue Tyrant Academy forces him to face Liu Erlong. Soon afterward, Tang San is kidnapped by Dugu Bo. Yu later joins Flender and Liu Erlong in searching for the missing Xiao Wu, unaware that Shi Yi has killed her 51 52 53.

Disciples in Conflict and the Tournament

After learning of Tang San’s attempted assassination of Shi Yi, Yu is disappointed but unable to reconcile them. He asks both disciples to spare the other’s life; Shi Yi refuses an unconditional promise, while Yu recognizes that Tang San’s agreement is unreliable 64 80.

Yu initially keeps Shi Yi as a tournament substitute and restricts his Martial Soul and Soul Ring use to reduce unwanted attention. As the competition progresses, protecting Shi Yi becomes increasingly urgent 66 76 79.

He takes Shi Yi to Spirit City and asks Bibi Dong to provide protection, explicitly denying that he trained Tang San to oppose her. Bibi Dong agrees on the condition that Shi Yi publicly joins Spirit Hall. Yu also seeks help with Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls, but that request is refused because of Tang San’s Clear Sky Sect background 79 80 82.

After Spirit Hall Destroys His Clan

The destruction of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan changes Yu’s view of his disciples’ allegiances. Shi Yi’s continued association with Spirit Hall causes him sorrow, while he concludes that Tang San, as a sect Soul Master, can remain on his side despite their imperfect bond 128.

He warns Tang San that Shi Yi is likely on Sea God Island and advises against going there. When Shi Yi later returns to Shrek and offers help, Yu declines and chooses to stay with Liu Erlong 128 142.
