Background / History
Before evolving, Golisopod was timid. Its evolution drastically changed its temperament: it became bold, aggressive, flamboyant, and intensely competitive. Eichi identified it as his first Pokémon with Champion-level talent, and its strength immediately exceeded Heracross's. 386
Golisopod trained relentlessly, refusing to stop until it reached its limit. Its main self-imposed rival was Scizor; it sought to surpass Scizor in every aspect, pushing both Pokémon to train harder. 386
Eichi developed Golisopod's speed and perception through intensive projectile-dodging drills. It learned to track every incoming iron ball's trajectory and evade volleys from four firing machines without being hit. 393 Eichi later equipped it with a Blue Shard, which it stored inside its back armor to enhance its Water-type attacks. 416
Appearance
Golisopod is a silver-gray armored Pokémon with segmented back plates, shield-like forearms, sharp claws, and sensitive feelers. 374 709
- Its third back segment can open to launch Pin Missiles. 374
- Its arms can be pressed together as a defensive shield, then forced apart to redirect attacks. 374
- It forms water-blue energy katanas around its arms or at its waist when using Aqua Jet. 374 683
- Its sharp claws can be coated in Purple, metallic, or Ghost-type energy for attacks such as Shadow Claw and Metal Claw. 682 886
Personality
Golisopod is highly self-confident, narcissistic, and fond of dramatic displays after victory. It enjoys fighting before an audience and visibly relishes battles against powerful opponents. 386 623 816
It is also fiercely competitive. Its rivalry with Scizor began during training, while its later challenges against Beedrill and Pinsir came from its desire to test and prove its own strength. 386 563 977
A recurring habit is its signature Taunt gesture: it extends an arm, curls its claws inward, and provokes opponents into attacking. 621
Abilities & Skills
Aqua Jet
Golisopod's signature finishing technique condenses Water-type energy into a katana before it accelerates at extreme speed and delivers a slashing strike.
- Defeated Tauros with a single high-speed draw slash. 374
- Split Froslass's Hyper Beam and finished the battle with a decisive slash. 622 623
- Cleaved Rhyperior's Hyper Beam in two before striking Rhyperior directly. 683
- Can form one or two energy swords, allowing it to maintain a close-range barrage against opponents such as Pinsir. 977
Water Tornado
Water Tornado is a fusion skill created by combining Aqua Jet with Swords Dance. Golisopod spins while enveloped in water, becoming a destructive blue tornado. 834 835
- Initial attempts exhausted Golisopod quickly because it could not properly control both techniques at once. 834
- After several days of training, it developed sufficient control to batter high-defense humanoid targets continuously. 835
- It was used as Golisopod's ultimate move against Pinsir's Hyper Beam. 978
- It can disperse attacks such as Sleep Powder while striking multiple enemies across an area. 873
Perception and Evasion
Golisopod possesses trained sensory abilities and exceptional burst movement.
- It can read dense projectile patterns and evade them with rapid turns, leaps, and afterimages. 393
- Its perception lets it distinguish an opponent's real body among Double Team clones. 621
- It used perception and strong willpower to resist Froslass's Quiver Dance fusion technique, though it was still partially affected. 622
- It can remain airborne long enough to evade ground-based attacks and launch aerial counters. 722 816
- It has demonstrated flight-like movement by using water streams. 967
Defensive Techniques
Golisopod's forearms and endurance make it unusually difficult to defeat.
- It blocked and redirected Tauros's Thunderbolt and Hyper Beam by bracing its shield-like arms together. 374
- Its Hidden Power can create an enclosed earthen barrier capable of withstanding Electivire's Thunder. 811
- Its defensive ability was identified as its greatest strength during its battle with Bruno's Hitmonchan. 961
- It can endure severe damage long enough to retaliate, including its final Aqua Jet counterattack against Metagross. 723
Emergency Exit
When Golisopod senses danger during a difficult battle, Emergency Exit enhances its reactions, attack, defense, and speed. 978
- The ability activated during its battle with Pinsir after both combatants had exhausted themselves. 978
- Even after the all-around boost, Golisopod still needed Water Tornado to secure victory against Pinsir. 978
Other Combat Techniques
- Pin Missile / Light Needles — Fires a limited number of unusually powerful missile-like needles rather than a large volley of weaker projectiles. 374 447
- Water Cannon / Water Pulse — Used for direct clashes, ranged suppression, and exploiting type advantages against opponents such as Rhyperior and Nidoking. 683 763 885
- Shadow Claw — Forms enormous purple energy claws for close-range offense. 682 886
- Metal Claw — Produces metallic energy claws; effective in exchanges against Froslass and Quick Swim Frog. 622 816
- Double Team and Surprise Attack — Creates clones and uses burst movement to disrupt opponents before closing in. 811 977
- Rain Dance — Countered Magmortar's Fire Spin and created favorable weather for Golisopod's Water-type attacks. 825 826
Equipment / Items
- Blue Shard — A shard stored inside Golisopod's back armor that increases the power of its Water-type moves and noticeably strengthens its aura. 416
Relationships
- Eichi — Trainer. Eichi recognizes Golisopod's Champion-level potential, develops its specialized training, and created Water Tornado for it. 386 834 835
- Scizor — Rival and teammate. Golisopod seeks to surpass Scizor in training and battle, creating pressure that motivates both of them. 386
- Beedrill — Competitive teammate. Golisopod challenged Beedrill during free activity time and, after reaching Elite Four level, considered itself no longer inferior to it. 563 767
- Greninja — Breakthrough opponent. Greninja's pressure during their Water Cannon clash triggered Golisopod's Elite Four breakthrough. 762 763
- Pinsir — Respected rival. Their prolonged battle pushed both combatants to their limits; Golisopod ultimately remained standing after their Water Tornado and Hyper Beam clash. 977 978
- Blaziken — Former tournament opponent. Golisopod fought Kado's Elite Four-level ace evenly before revealing greater strength and overwhelming it. 662 663
Story Role / Major Arcs
Indigo League Tournament
Golisopod defeated Shida's Tauros to send Eichi into the semifinals. It poisoned Tauros with Poison Jab, blocked both Thunderbolt and Hyper Beam, then finished the match with Pin Missile and Aqua Jet. The performance earned it substantial audience admiration. 374
Battles Against Da Tao and Kado
Against Da Tao's Froslass, Golisopod used perception training and willpower to counter Quiver Dance, then split Froslass's Hyper Beam with Aqua Jet. 621 622
It later fought Kado's Blaziken, an Elite Four-level ace. Golisopod initially allowed the battle to appear even before revealing its superior strength and relentlessly overpowering Blaziken. 662 663
Rhyperior and Elite Four-Level Opponents
Golisopod defeated Rex's higher-level Rhyperior through Water Cannon, Shadow Claw, Pin Missile, and Aqua Jet, ultimately cleaving Rhyperior's Hyper Beam apart. 682 683
It later fought Mina's Metagross despite being heavily injured. Golisopod managed to slice through Metagross's Psychic with Aqua Jet before fainting from its accumulated injuries. 722 723
Elite Four Breakthrough
Eichi arranged a battle with Xiao Ye's Greninja specifically to help Golisopod advance. During a Water Cannon deadlock, the pressure triggered its breakthrough to Elite Four level, allowing its Water Cannon to overwhelm Greninja. Eichi ended the battle before either Pokémon suffered serious injury. 762 763 764
Water Tornado Development
Following battles against increasingly strong opponents, Eichi determined that Aqua Jet alone could not remain Golisopod's ultimate trump card. He trained it to combine Aqua Jet and Swords Dance, producing Water Tornado. 834 835
Pinsir Battle
Golisopod engaged a Peak Elite Four Pinsir in an extended battle marked by close-range exchanges, Double Team, Shadow Claw, Aqua Jet, and Swords Dance. Emergency Exit activated near the climax, and Golisopod won after its Water Tornado clashed with Pinsir's Hyper Beam. 977 978
Elite Four Challenge
By the time of its match against Bruno's Hitmonchan, Golisopod had reached Late Elite Four level and was treated as Eichi's strongest available battler. 961 It later reached Intermediate Champion level and was sent against Lorelei's Jynx in Eichi's decisive Elite Four challenge. 1015
