Background / History
Beedrill evolved from Ying Shi's Metapod after Ying Shi injected it with energy during a confrontation with a poaching gang that had slaughtered Bug-type Pokémon. Driven by anger toward the poachers and a desire to protect its kin, it emerged unusually large and powerful. 21
Immediately after evolving, Beedrill used Focus Energy and Agility to reach the poachers' electromagnetic cannons, destroyed one with Twin Needles, and eliminated the remaining two with Pin Missile. Its strike removed the gang's principal threat before the wider battle began. 21 22
The extraordinary strength it displayed during its evolution proved temporary: its newly learned moves had briefly reached Mastery, then became harder to control once its condition normalized. Ying Shi consequently began a long-term training program focused on speed, precision, physical strength, and move mastery. 24
Beedrill later became a respected guest of the Viridian Forest Beedrill colony. Ying Shi traded Pokémon food for Special Grade Honey, strengthening the colony's trust in him; Beedrill's presence helped establish the relationship. 37 38
By the time Ying Shi returned to the colony, Beedrill's aura was powerful enough to impress the entire swarm. It defeated dozens of Beedrill—including Black Stripe Beedrill—in a solo demonstration, solidifying its position as a model of strength for the colony's younger members. 325
Appearance
Beedrill was already markedly larger than ordinary members of its species immediately after evolving. It has a sharp, imposing presence, ruby-red eyes, heavy white twin stingers, and patterned wings. 21
- Measures 1.3 m tall and weighs 36 kg, compared with the usual 1 m and 29.5 kg for its species. 24
- Its body is yellow and black, divided into three segments, with two pairs of wings and a tail stinger. 21
- Later developed visibly thicker joints, elongated arms, and metallic, rounded-triangular twin needles. 887
- In Mega Evolution, black connecting sections grow between its body segments; its antennae extend backward, its tail stinger lengthens, and gauntlet-like structures form around its arm stingers. 913
Mega Beedrill
Mega Beedrill retains its Bug/Poison typing while gaining a much more aggressive, knight-like silhouette. Its recorded base-stat total rises from 395 to 495, with 150 Attack and 145 Speed. 913
Personality
Beedrill is intensely protective of Bug-type Pokémon and initially emerged from evolution with visible killing intent toward the poaching gang. Despite its aggression in battle, it listens to Ying Shi's commands and accepted his order not to recklessly charge a numerically superior enemy. 21
It is disciplined, competitive, and eager to improve. It endures demanding gravity, precision, and endurance training, and repeatedly pushes through exhaustion during battles against stronger opponents. 25 37 54
Beedrill takes pride in its strength but also inspires other Bug-types. Black Stripe Beedrill came to admire it after witnessing its combat ability, while Nincada learned from Beedrill that Ying Shi's training could make Bug-type Pokémon powerful. 327 342
Abilities & Skills
Sniper
Beedrill's Ability is Sniper, rather than the usual Swarm. Critical hits deal 2.25 times normal damage. 24
- Combines Focus Energy with precise strikes to target vital points. 54 55
- Its Sniper-enhanced Brick Break was decisive against Onix after Ying Shi identified its weak point. 55
- A Sniper activation contributed to Sneasel being knocked unconscious by Brick Break. 820
Speed and Aerial Mobility
Beedrill's defining strength is extreme speed. It can sustain its maximum flight speed for twenty laps and completed fifty laps before exhaustion. 25
- Agility — learned ahead of schedule upon evolution; one of its first three skills to reach the ultimate level. 21 137
- Double Team — creates decoys to evade attacks or obscure its true position. 41 107 113
- Its movements became too fast for human eyes to track during high-speed training. 562
- Uses speed to evade projectiles, reposition instantly, and overwhelm aerial opponents such as Pidgeot and Corviknight. 369 679 887
- Heavy rain, sandstorms, and its relatively low durability can reduce the advantage granted by its speed. 370 712
Needle Combat and Physical Offense
Beedrill specializes in close-range, assassin-like physical combat built around extreme speed and attack power. 97
- Twin Needles — its signature close-range technique; trained through repeated thrusting drills and precision targets until it reached ultimate mastery. 35 137
- Fury Attack — uses its tail stinger to deliver concentrated poisonous strikes; trained with blindfolded accuracy exercises. 35
- Poison Jab and Brick Break — high-impact physical attacks used to defeat opponents including Onix, Sneasel, and Dewgong. 54 820 821
- Aerial Ace, Pursuit, Night Slash, and Rage — part of its evolved move set, supporting its pursuit and close-quarters style. 24
- Swords Dance — raises its physical attack and can be layered repeatedly to reach maximum attack enhancement. 55
Pin Missile
Beedrill can manifest and fire large numbers of light needles, making Pin Missile its principal ranged attack. 21 263
- Destroyed two electromagnetic cannons in the poaching-gang raid. 22
- Can cover all angles around a target, leaving no blind spots. 263
- Continued improving until it could leave marks on a previously undamaged pillar. 457
- Can be combined with other techniques, including Mega Pin Missile against Bruno's Primeape. 963
Poison and Battlefield Control
Beedrill uses poison both to weaken enemies and to shape the battlefield before direct engagement.
- Toxic Spikes — scatters persistent poisonous spikes across the field; the spikes can remain for about an hour, though Beedrill must wait between volleys. 35
- Used Toxic Spikes to wear down Onix and to locate Houndoom within black fog. 54 107
- Toxic and Poison Jab enabled it to poison and defeat Blastoise and Dewgong. 372 821
- Poison is especially valuable against opponents that initially withstand its direct attacks, as seen in its battle against Primeape. 963
Defense and Advanced Techniques
Beedrill has developed defensive and multi-skill techniques to offset its limited endurance.
- Protect — creates a green energy barrier capable of stopping attacks such as Ursaring's Arm Hammer and Tyranitar's Hyper Beam. 108 713
- Substitute — used to avoid powerful attacks and gain positional advantage. 108 564
- Can use two skills simultaneously after dedicated training, including combinations such as Swords Dance with Pursuit or Poison Jab. 119 564 963
- Hidden Power, Ice Beam, and Bullet Seed expand its coverage beyond its usual Bug- and Poison-type attacks. 41 820 869
- Super Beedrill — its signature energy-beam technique; unleashing it at full power triggered its breakthrough to Late Elite Four rank. 909
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Weighted needle covers — used to improve the strength and durability of its twin-needle strikes. 35 36
- Weight Training Device — gravity-generating vest; Beedrill adapted to double gravity and later trained at the device's five-times-gravity maximum. 36 37 97
- Gravity room — later used for training beyond the weight device's limit, beginning at seven times gravity. 608
- Mega Evolution Stone — worn by Beedrill to enable Mega Evolution alongside Ying Shi's Keystone. 913
- Life Orb — tested to amplify the energy coating its Twin Needles. 415
Relationships
- Ying Shi — Trainer and closest partner. Their shared trust allows Beedrill to receive commands through Insect Control Power and ultimately enabled Mega Evolution. 21 681 913
- Viridian Forest Beedrill Leader — Allied colony leader who welcomed Beedrill and Ying Shi, traded Special Grade Honey with them, and entrusted Black Stripe Beedrill to Ying Shi's care. 37 325
- Black Stripe Beedrill — Younger colony Beedrill who admires Beedrill's strength and uses it as an example to pursue greater power. 325 327
- Scizor — Teammate and frequent training opponent. Scizor recognizes Beedrill as the team's leader after seeing it defeat Scizor and Heracross together. 327 564
- Heracross — Teammate and sparring partner; Beedrill later rescued Heracross from the Fearow Leader. 39 869
- Kabutops — Teammate and rival training partner. Kabutops later became strong enough to nearly close the gap with Beedrill in close-range exchanges. 564 767
- Teacher Jiang Ben's Beedrill — An Elite Four-level elder Beedrill that initially intimidated Beedrill but later recognized its unusual potential and believed it could surpass it. 125
